    Had my timing belt done at 75,000 miles at a Subaru dealership in Charlotte. I was real green back then. Recently dug up my receipt. They didn't change any of my pulleys. Not happy. Luckily when I had my head gaskets replaced at 92 000, my dad's mechanic replaced all the pulleys. I never would of bothered looking if I hadn't started watching your videos. Thank you so much! Installed a Gates timing belt kit in my son's 2006 Forester at 196,000 miles, because the tensioner had failed. The kit included everything except the water pump. Two weeks ago at 226,000, the car overheated, and my son pulled over and we checked it out. When we tried to start it, it sounded like it had a box of rocks banging around, so we assumed that the timing belt had failed and the pistons were hitting valves. We pulled the timing belt cover, and it turned out that the belt had not failed - one of the idler bearings (the one to the upper left of the crankshaft) had failed completely, the balls were all over the place, the bearing was all burned, and there were spots of burned belt on all of the other bearings. We were amazed that the belt had not snapped (and it had not slipped any teeth) - so I can't say anything negative about the Gates belt, but the bearings (they are Chinese) are obviously sub-standard. Anyway, after doing some KZread research, I found your posts that state that Aisin is the ONLY timing belt kit you can recommend - it has all Japanese parts. We got lucky, and I will NEVER buy another Gates kit. This could have cost several thousand dollars if the engine had been ruined. Thank you!

    In Australia the Subaru Dealers do sell a timing belt kit for the EJ and other models, minus the water pump which is a seperate cost as it is not always required to be replaced. For example the kit part number for and EJ 2.5 turbo is called TBKIT006 direct from dealers, and if you plan in advance more often than not you can get a deal on the kit from a dealer cheaper than buying individual components. Last kit I got from the dealer earlier this year was cheaper than the Aisin.

  • @802Garage
    @802Garage3 жыл бұрын

    I definitely think Aisin is the best aftermarket option. However, I recently purchased a Gates "N" kit and I was overall pleased with everything except for the tensioner body itself. The bearing was OEM, but the tensioner body was not marked, so I suspect the hydraulic component is not made in Japan. The water pump was made in China I believe, but it looked nearly identical to OEM inside. Kit went on perfect and car is running well. I have a full video to release going over the kit, I'll have to get on that. The only reason I went with it was to see if the N kit was truly all OEM components and it was something like $40 cheaper than the Aisin for seemingly all the same components minus the water pump. Gates tries to be clever by calling the non OEM component kit "OE Improved" but you definitely want the part number ending in "N" labeled "OE Design" instead.

  • @802Garage

    @802Garage

    3 жыл бұрын

    Actually, just edited mine and it looks like the tensioner that comes in the Gates kit is identical to the one from the Aisin kit in your video. So I'm betting they both come from the same Japanese factory. Both have the same NOK seals as well which are of course Japanese. So the only components that are for sure different are the water pump and actually the smaller double roller idler. The one in the Gates kit has a black seal and just says Gates, no country of origin stamp, so I'm guessing not Japanese. Very bizarre that only the small roller is not a Japanese component.

    G'day mate, would you by any chance have the part number for the old style tensioner and pulley? If it's possible to retrofit a better thing, i'd be down for that...

    I got 2002 Subaru forester S 4 speed automatic transmission , bought a Aisin TKF - 001. Apparently i need to use my old thermostat housing on this water pump because it has the nipple for oil cooler line and just pray the water pump has right angle for my old housing but lookin at it it's going to work fine. Subaru discontinued the thermostat housing for these so i better never have anything bad happen to it and be really careful torque wrench them tiny bolts on there at less then 5 ft. Lbs.

    Hi! How did the job go? I'm doing my 2002 Forester w/Auto transmission now and noticing that Aisin only lists a kit for the manual transmission. Like yours, my water pump has the oil cooler nipple too. Did everything go ok with the housing swap and kit installation? My local Subaru dealer does still list the water pump. It lists for around $140, so worst case I can get the pump from them and it should have the correct housing

    Bought a gates kit once and only once tensioner lasted a month and it would slack when it got cools overnight I was on night shift and it would knock for the first 30 seconds till I figured out the tensioner failed

    You say the TKF-006 works for the EJ251, but everywhere online says it doesn't and that I need the TKF-001. What's your thoughts?

    I got these kits, 20k so far removed everything and everything is great. I changed my 12' FXT at 110k and the belt was still great, the idler was not as smooth compared to a new one you can hear the bearing...slightly. The only problem was that one of the smooth idlers was different compared to OEM (green vs red/orange OEM) not sure if they were equivalent so I returned it and the new kit had the same inner color rubber.

    I have EJ254, 2001 2.5L DOHC JDM. Couldn't find any Aisin-TKF's that would match it, only TKF-010 but, it has timing belt for SOHC engine. Should I just buy timing belt separately then? Many thanks

    My SG5 forester recently popped its belt, well I think it did. Engine lost power, no compression on attempted restart. My engine is the JDM EJ205 non avcs engine. Which Aisin kit should I be looking to get? Really pray that this is all is have to do and not an engine rebuild/replacement.
