ALTRA Vanish Carbon Half Marathon Review | Are they worth it?

I'd like to talk about whether it was worth it for me to pay that much money for a pair of running shoes.
The Altra Vanish Carbon is Altra's first Carbon fiber plated running shoe and I needed to test them out for my local half marathon.
The carbon-plated marathon racing market now has a bouncy, 0mm drop option called the Altra Vanish Carbon. The Vanish Carbon packs Altra’s most energetic foam, an efficient rocker geometry, and a unique carbon fiber plate all into a race day package that features a roomy fit through the toebox in comparison to other carbon plated racing shoes.
The Vanish Carbon gives runners a propulsive and well-cushioned road racing option that offers modern performance while staying true to the brand's natural-feeling fit and zero-drop design. This unique racing shoe features an all new foam called EGOPRO which is Altra’s lightest and most energy-efficient compound available, and embedded in the comfortably bouncy foam is a segmented carbon fiber plate with a fork-like design. The 3-finger carbon plate gives runners a more natural ride that works with the foot while also providing an efficient and snappy toe-off.
The overall geometry of the Vanish Carbon is highly efficient through the use of the Active Stance Rocker, and it's built to create an ultra smooth ride at a variety of paces. The toe-box shape is designed to be slightly wider than traditional shoes and falls into Altra’s thinnest, but still naturally roomy, SLIM category. The outsole of the Vanish Carbon displays a healthy amount of rubber for optimal traction and the lightweight upper secures the foot while also being breathable and race-ready.

Hey man, what helped my to transition from heel strike to midfoot/forefoot running, was doing my easy runs on Merrel Vapor Gloves. The complete lack of support gives perfect feedback to your feet and lower legs, and over time my feet, ankles and calves got so much stronger and stable. It took me about a year of transitioning completely. But it is so worth it. I had a flat left foot, included collapsed ankle, I thought I would never run normally. Tried every shoe with every support system over the years, without any benefits. But over time, running in minimalist shoes, this has completely changed, naturally. I'd advise to get a pair of Vapor Gloves and start training once in a while on them. Your stride will improve automatically, as long as you listen to your body. ps: I don't believe in stretching. I start my runs very slowly, and after about 1-1,5 km my body is warmed up, and I can up my speed a bit. No issues with recovery

Hey Timothy from the past. Belated congrats! Regarding shin splints, maybe try and strengthen your calves: walk on your toes walk on your heels. I think these are easy to do in any situation and will be the start of something in the right direction... Rather than nothing 😁

Nice details of the race, Timothy, and the question remains so good. Are they worth it? I spoke with someone on one of our local store and they don't have testing shoes for races, as the one I bought after I tested last year, Hoka Mach 4... Probably they're too expensive for this... Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience with them. All the best wishes, mate! 👍

Thanks Jon! For both the comment and feedback. I value feedback very much! I've always had trouble with my speech, and that in combination with talking to a camera, trying to remember text and being tri-lingual, it often comes out rather unclear. I'm continuing to work on it 😊 thanks again and I hope my content continues to be entertaining and valuable to you 🤘

@@TDMiller I wouldn't say unclear at all. You do a great job. When I was learning my second language, my teacher was critical of all the small things, and it helped immensely. The nationals were shocked at how I spoke, even though my skin is pale white. The feedback was very much a gift, so I try to pass that on. Best regards!

Impressive running for someone not “race ready”! They are a lovely looking pair of shoes for sure. Prices are always relative. Whilst super shoes may seem expensive, if you think about it, you can get the same pair as the best of the best wear for under $300. In how many other sports is that possible? In cycling you'd have to pay over $10,000 to get a complete pro kit. And although I'm yet to try these shoes, I have ran in Vaporflies, and can tell you that over a marathon distance, super shoes make a big difference and are definitely worth it if you are shooting for a PB.

Thanks - How would you compare the Carbons to the Escalante Racer that you reviewed last year?

  • @TDMiller

    @TDMiller

    Жыл бұрын

They feel very different from each other. The Racer is a light weight, very minimal, nimble, agile running shoe. It requires strong feet and calves to keep the pace high. The Vanish Carbon helps the runner gain momentum with the rocker geometry and bouncy (yet firm) midsole. The Racer is wider, and the VC is fairly narrow in comparison. In my opinion, the Racer is a great shoe of you put a lot of value in overall foot strength and health. The VC on the other hand will help you break PBs. Hope this helps 😊

@@TDMiller Many thanks TD. I only use Escalante 2.5 at this point (not crazy about the 3s). I have used Torins , but still gravitate towards the minimalist feel of the Escalante. Sounds like the Racer might be the ticket. As you say, strong feet and calves! The VC is intriguing although the narrowness seems anti-Altra. Count me a new subscriber!

Tough question. It depends how much space you currently have in the LP6. I have both shoes in 44EU and am happt. The LP could have been smaller, but the VC definitely could not. So if you have a lot of space in the LP6 I say get the same size, but if you think the LP6 fits perfectly, then go up half a size 😊

Imho middle of the pack runners should not invest in those type of shoes. The benefit is probably all in the head. It's just better to focus on proper training, strength and everything else. Back in 2019 I ran a 1:43 half in Nike Zoom Fly and I only managed to break that record in 2021 (same exact race and course) where I ran a 1:40 only this time I had on a pair of Kinvara 11.

As I only wear them as racing shoes, they're still going strong after 125km. I once read that 250km seems to be point most people said they noticed them to wear down. Primarily the outsole rubber, which is different on the Tempo. @@TDMiller for me I never lose toenails, or get blisters. I do enough trail running and have strong feet. Think about it this way. When my toes are wedged into an upper, my big toe can not spread out properly, causing my arch to not be supported, and thus start collapsing, giving me arch pain, especially on the right foot. This is why some Altras still work in 13 for me, even if they are a little shorter than I want. This is why I’ll typically go for 14s. 13.5 is my true to size but that size does not exist.
