    If I remember correctly, the upper campground is situated near/alongside a wash that experiences dangerous flash flooding, particularly in the monsoon season. There was (maybe still is, haven’t been in NV in a couple years now) an outdoor warning siren installed in the campground for flash flood warnings. All that to say, I think NPS may have closed that area due to the high risk. Cottonwood Cove definitely embodies the rugged beauty of the Mojave, happy to see it still alive and well. Great content by the way, I miss Southern Nevada and I enjoy seeing it again (if only by video).

A little bit of a truck and 4Wd is not needed but nice. Think the camp is still there?? Next time through will have to Scope it out. This was circa 1993. Nice cool water to. Love Black Canyon. Also canoed from the dam to the BSA camp and then to the fish hatchery. All geothermal springs with black Frogs. Dont drink the water as it has Amoebas that can kill you.

    First, nice videos and good info presented in a very pleasant manner, so well done! That being said I’ve just discovered your channel and so far watched a dozen or so vids about Lake Las Vegas etc., and I have to say the overall sensation or vibe is extremely eerie (not your fault by any stretch) as it seems so desolate and I keep wondering where all the people are at? I read a comment and your reply about it being filmed in November or something, but even so just can’t shake the feeling. It’s almost as if we are witnessing present day ghost towns or an extremely strange End of Days style sci fi movie! So sorry to say as you genuinely appear to be a very pleasant lady and I really enjoy your filming and presentation. Good luck with your channel!

    I'm trying to understand the reasons for lake mohave remaining full. Is it some topography that protects it,runoff or some other reason it remains full?

  • @marvinsauer8493

    @marvinsauer8493

    2 жыл бұрын

    Lake Mohave has very little storage capacity. It was used primarily to reduce river “surge” as water from Mead was varied throughout the day. Davis Dam provides much needed power, and the only way to generate maximum power is with reservoir near full. Draining Mohave would provide little water for downstream use, AND draining it would take much needed power generation. Generally a large reservoir upstream provides the water storage for several power generating dams down stream. Water passing through each lower dam provides lots of power from one storage facility. I would expect all the very small reservoirs below mead to stay nearly full to take advantage of power generation as the river passes through each small reservoir and the power plant on each dam.

    the reason lake Mojave is 98% full is because it is not being used to provide water to tens of millions of people in the three major cities of the DESERT SW every day. as soon as they start using lake mojave you will see it dry up also. The same as owens lake, the colorado river, lake powell, and lake mead have. The issue is not a 100 year drought or climate change, it is overpopulation. It is a DESERT region not meant to support the 100 plus gallons of water used every day by 10's of millions of people. the sooner that the city planners of the three major cities and the water commission for the 6 state region come to realize that fact, the sooner the "drought" will be relieved.

They know, let alone any extra so there is a point to where there will be water that isn't ponded, but still not enough to make power , you can turn the generator but not fast enough

    29%, is that acre feet or feet? There is a huge difference as the top half that is empty has much more volume than the lower narrow half. I love percentages instead of 29% of full pool elevation, or 29% of Acre Feet capacity.

    Not to mention as the lake gets lower, the less land around it is holding water too. Sometimes the ground around a lake will be saturated for hundreds of yards. As the lake level drops, the water in the surrounding land does too but at a much slower rate. As the lake covers less area, the rate it drops has been accelerating.

    Hi Mike Houseman. Great question! Here are some findings I've pulled off the nps.gov website.."Situated between a series of foreboding canyon walls and built between Hoover Dam and Davis Dam, Lake Mohave is a reservoir used to fine-tune water releases headed downstream....Lake Mohave serves as a re-regulation reservoir. Lake Mohave is intended to control water flowing from it’s only major water source, Hoover Dam. This stabilization gives managers the ability to fine-tune just how much, and when, water is released downstream to areas like California and even Mexico - making the obligatory water releases more efficient....the amount of water flowing into Lake Mohave remains consistent". I hope this helps!

    Mohave is down stream from Mead. Water from Mead goes through Hoover Dam to produce power. Power production has to be constant, so the water flow out of Mead into Mohave is constant. However Mead has reach power pool, so power production and water flow is affected. Mead is also in danger of reaching dead pool where it will no longer be able to discharge any water into the Mohave. Once that happens the Mohave will also start drying up.

    Miss Liz thank you for the wonderful video! 🌹👸 The Cottonwood cove / Lake Mohave doesn't have the constant water level drop as does Meade & Powell. Are there state to state fights or arguments about water rights & usage? Is Cottonwood cove considered a viable water source for SearchLight & Vegas? Thank you 🌹 (p.s. you're hot!) Please be safe on the shorelines as some parts are muddy! & I subbed 🤓😘

    Hi J. Lietka, thank you for watching and also for your nice compliments! The 7 states and Mexico that use the water from the Colorado river all have an agreement in place outlining how much water each state/area is allotted to get. A National Park Ranger told me that they were supposed to have another meeting to come up with a new distribution plan and he was hopeful that Lake Mead would be able to keep more water now than in the past. Cottonwood Cove (Lake Mohave) would not be a viable water source for Vegas because this body of water is already down river from Hoover Dam. To be viable for Vegas Lake Mead would need to keep more of it's water instead of release it down stream to Lake Mohave. Thanks for your questions, I appreciate you!

    @@lakelasvegaslife7903 very welcome lovely goddess ❤️. Another KZreadr, so to speak, also has videos where he goes to the edges of Lake Meade (Mead?) & shows how low the lake is getting. Used to live in Vegas (2006 - 2009, live in NC now) & even then we had to watch the water usage. I think California takes a higher percentage of the available water, but mostly for crops. I am surprised more people aren't selling their boats, as the level keeps dropping. It's sad & a bit scary too. Be safe when you go to the lakes as some areas where the water was, is now muddy. Thank you again 🌹👸 ❤️ post some more videos when you can.

    Hi J. Lietka, Yes, the lakes are miles long, and in some cases hundreds of feet deep at the deepest points. But Lake Mead and Lake Powell are pretty bad with the lowest lake levels when you compare the "full" lake level to where it's at now. Lake Mead has 3 intake valves, which draw water in and then supply millions of people with water for drinking and irrigation. 1 of 3 intake valves is now exposed and no longer able to draw water in, leaving only the 2 valves which are at deeper depths of the lake.

    When you let out more than comes down the river the lake level finally goes to nothing. All you have to do is look at the precipitation figures over the Colorado drainage to see that the people tasked with managing Lake Powell and Lake Mead are failing to do their job.
