Alternative Guide To Berlin

In our alternative guide to Berlin, we will share some of our tips and suggestions on everything from what to do to where to stay and eat.
We will visit Berlin zoo (zoologischer garten), walk museum island and enjoy Berlin by the water by taking a river cruise on Spree. Recommend and look at some great bars in Berlin such as Klunkerkranich, ORA, Kantine am Berghain and Holzmarkt 25. We visit two of our favorite restaurants in Berlin in Brasserie Collette and Kimchi Princess. We stay in Maritim Hotel in Friedrichstrasse. Come join us!

For first time visiters I would recommend to stay at Alexander Platz and rent a bicycle. When you are lost you will always know your way back as you can just bike towards the TV tower. It helped me many times when I didn't know my way.

Definitely rent a bicycle (fahrradmieten) and experience Berlin that way. I also recommend visiting Sachsenhausen KZ Lager, very easy to get to. Take S1 from Gesundbrunnen station to Oranienburg, walk about 20 minutes to the camp. Very interesting

Beautiful narrative and filming (color grading is tops!). Having lived in Berlin for over 12 years before German reunification, I can totally relate to your impressions even thought the city has moved on since. But its uniqueness has remained. Not for everyone, but for everyone with an open mind. Great job capturing that.

I can see Berlin has a similar vibe to my Bucharest. The people, the music, the clothing, the clubs. This is so refreshing. I work for a German company Munich based, nice city, but it is "soul-less" to use a harsh word. I'm considering switching to something Berlin based. The pay might be lower, but it makes up for it in spirit. I only fear the winter months....

I LOVE BERLIN!! I first visited BERLIN in 1987 when you think only 42 years after the War!! Now 60 it seems like even my first visit was years ago! It was still divided and had the feeling of intrigue back then especially upon visiting the Eastern side! I was back again in 1989 and in 1995 end up working CONSTRUCTION in and around BERLIN! Finding work in 1995 seemed to have been easy for me since back home I was a 13 year member of the IRONWORKERS UNION I knew how too erect steel buildings and bridges weld and tie rebar I hooked up with some crazy British Bricklayers one who became my BOSS and a long time friend and almost lost family member I was their rebar guy making and setting footings and walls and columns something I loved doing and loved the work the only thing I didn’t know and with some help after a few days and some mistakes was the metric system which has even gave me an extra advantage when I got back to America not to mention me speaking German who on a few jobs I worked for GERMAN CONTRACTORS and engineers who did not have good American working class language skills so I got paid extra and for my knowledge of METRIC and being from NEW JERSEY we make a solid living as far as pay but in 1995 I had worked in and around BERLIN with MANY BRITISH Guys and Some GERMANS who I also befriended and I can tell you the only difference between us was our accents but I almost felt like I was home working and becoming friends with all these different people in a different country who were all TRADESMEN the BALLBREAKING IS THE SAME THE SLANG THE GUYS THE CAMARADERIE IS AMAZING HOW DID WE ACTUALLY FIGHT A WAR AND KILL PEOPLE JUST EXACTLY AS OURSELVES I COULD NOT GET OVER THIS!! But anyway I lived in BERLIN had an apartment dated a few different Berliner Females for some time LOVED IT SO SO MUCH If it wasn’t for my Dad still being alive whom I was close to like a brother since my mother died before I was 2 and my Grandmother his mother just passed the year before my Dad also being an Ironworker I may have never returned home yes I find this somewhat regretful now that I am ALONE AT now 60 how my life may have been different! I returned to BERLIN in 2000 and stood for a few weeks this time and again only with my Father in 2006 who was a WW2 History Buff as myself only now he was 68 and had become diagnosed with LUNG CANCER a year before so at a period of remission I took him to a place he always dreamed of going and with me to BERLIN where we stood for 3 WEEKS he also fell in LOVE with the City and its CHARM I actually realized how BERLIN had changed so much since my first visit in 87 20 years earlier!! My German was GREAT A few friends I worked with would meet up with me and my Dad after Work in a Typical German BERLINER WORKING CLASS BAR and treated my Dad like a BROTHER he was never so Happy unfortunately I lost him a year later BUT HE DID GET TOO SEE BERLIN BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY!! And this was my last Time I was in a CITY THAT NOW GAVE ME EVEN SOME LOST LOVING MEMORIES OF MY DAD!!

You have some nice shots here. Good edit as well. Still, no one in their mind and good health should look for charm in old concrete, dirt and liter. It’s in human nature to strive for better, for cleanness and comfort, that’s why Berlin is called a city of subcultures, radicals etc. It is deviant, for bad or for good. If somebody call you “cheap drunk person from the streets” and you feel proud of that - Berlin suits you well. If you felt offended - Berlin not a city for you. If a person who willingly use paint on 19th century wooden door to draw a tag, line, or other non structural thing is an “artist” - you will like Berlin. If you think the art is something else - Berlin is not for you. If a “progress” in your mind is that a man can walk in a leather squirt on the streets - you will like Berlin. But don’t expect good pedestrian infrastructure, efficient city organization or modern public transportation nor architecture. If someone said “freedom” and you instantly think of a drunk company yelling and screaming on the streets, or homeless people breaking glass bottles in front of the police, or subcultures occupying the streets for “demonstrations’ (getting drunk and listen to music on the streets) - Berlin is for you. But don’t expect that your opinion would matter when you tell that you don’t like gentrification. Or that you would love to have old architecture restored to pre-war state. Or trains produced after 80-s at s/u-bahn. That place is called a shithole not for nothing. It is a net loss for Germany as whole. City management at the level of spending 15 year to build an airport which is obsolete at the moment it was opened…
