ALTA II EP04 New Scenery, New DCC system, DCC decoder bonanza for the HO scale Alta California Ry.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Carving mesas, stuffing decoders in locomotives new & old, and my DCC system dies, & gets replaced! Lots of progress to share on the ALTA this month.
Capturing late 1960's railroading in miniature down in Mexico, the Alta-California railway is a proto-freelanced railroad modeled in HO scale. The layout is an 8x15' "donut" shape, with generously broad, super-elevated curves to run 60's era passenger trains beautifully well.

I think a full locomotive collection tour would be cool

Great idea! I'll make that into a video soon. Make sure to subscribe to see it when it debuts
I would have thought putting "mood lighting" on a layout was a silly idea until I saw it in action. That looks great for sunset/sunrise and twilight lighting!

I feel the same way! I had a general idea it'd be fun, but it's way more fun than even I thought it'd be. So calming and entertaining.
THose shots with the backlight concrete sell me on that being an absolute neccessity to install when I get to build my layout. SO pretty.
Digitrax is notorious for terrible customer support. I'm super glad you went the NCE route, no planned obsolesce, everything is designed to work together, great customer support, and its super intuitive to use.
Needs more greenbrier presidential express
When it comes to DCC, I’m the exact opposite. I love doing installs, it’s like trying to piece a puzzle together in my mind. I had a blast hardwiring my Proto2000 ALCO PA more recently. Now I’m in the process of trying to do the same for a Westside brass UP 4-8-2.

I totally understand loving the "puzzle" aspect of it. Now that I'm only doing decoder installs for myself, or part of a larger project, I don't have to dislike doing it nearly as much. Also the "logic" of it is clearer now after forcing myself to do 20+ decoder installs this fall. I've been installing decoders for over 15 years, but only now has it begun to be a pleasant experience.

@@InterurbanEra I was unofficially dubbed “CME” for my friend’s model railroad and did a good number of DCC installations and locomotive repairs for them. They were kind enough to trust me with their models to get them working and the experience has definitely helped.
Looks awesome!
huh! I'm currently wrapping up a DCC install on an old metal truck Athearn BB Alco PA-1 that I swapped a Genesis RTR motor into.

Wow, talk about an upgrade! My first PA model was one of those. How'd the motor swap end up going?
that loco at 1:35 looks familiar 🤔🤔🤔🤔
2:27, I'm going to defend Digitrax here... They only dropped support recently, and they dropped it as they can no longer source parts. It's not a trust thing, it's more they would if they could. That being said, I prefer the NCE interface anyway.

I'm not anti-digitrax, but the flat response and no offer to trade it in for an upgrade at cost as Dremel still does as of 2022 lost them my business for control systems at least. I'll continue to buy their decoders as needed though.
I just had that horrible creative impulse in my brain that said "you can thread tiny string lights or LEDs in a grassy section and stimulate lil fireflies"
@InterurbanEra

Honestly that'd be SO cool. That, or hide the ends of fiber optic cable in amongst the grass...this sounds incredible.

Thanks for these videos! Reintroducing me to the old love of model trains. What soldering station did you go with?
