Custom Boxcars & Scratchbuilt Art Deco Causeway | ALTA Railway 12

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Rolling stock comes to life this month on the ALTA. We're also finalizing the depot and Interurban Line, which will draw this all together in the coming months so we can have an operational interurban as well.

Your Mexico 68 logo gives me strong Vermont Railway/VRS vibes, and I enjoy that. Gives it a real "we might be struggling but damn straight we're stylish doing it" vibe and stylish it is.

Thank you! I'm so glad the vibe hit the mark and you picked up on it. It's been so fun to create the world of the ALTA

Indeed. I'm a recent newcomer to your channel and Instagram content and I see we have alot of similar tastes, it feels good knowing that I'm not alone in pursuit of this range hyper-specific character in world building.

Love that old style logo, really invokes the feeling of old missions in the southwest which I find so delightfully charming and an underrated architectural style outside the southwest. And that station is great too, it's a shame more passenger agencies today don't put more effort into their designs for new stations (cough cough Metra New Lenox). Great work, yo.

you know what would be neat? An ALTA Wrecking Crane, like one of those big 150 tonners

FUNNY you should say that.... I procured a beautiful 120 ton Brownhoist from Tichy and a 250T Roco diesel crane. I've already begun kitbashing crane tender cars as well, so stay tuned.

6:00 Trust me, you get nostalgic to that smell real quick when you grow up in a beach and fishing town.

I love the Mexico 68 boxcar, but I think the livery is very bold for a standard boxcar livery. Maybe it would be more subtle after weathering, but seeing a block train of orange boxcars would make me think more of an exhibition train than of general freight. I prefer seing them dotted throughout the more mundane brown cars. Could you maybe also do a boxcar in the purple colour of your Mexico 68 scheme, or maybe a reefer livery of white with purple lettering? I think that would look very striking!

The Orange "Mexico68" cars are for special cushioned service only (and older cars rebuilt in that narrow two year span) so they'll be much rarer than the oxide brown cars, and additionally they were only painted up between 1966- Fall of 1968, so perhaps 10-20% of the fleet ever wore it. So it'll be a rare sighting. Such striking cars were pretty standard by 1968, look at the Rio Grande, DT&I, GT, ATSF, and other railroads for even more intensely colored cars. I'm intrigued by the idea of a Magenta reefer car, I'll have to explore that. You'll definitely see the Magenta return on Diesel "B" units and head-end passenger cars.

@@InterurbanEra Thanks for your detailed answer! I must confess, I've really taken a liking to your use of magenta, as it's such a rare colour in railroad paint schemes, which is why I keep bringing it up. Looking forward to seeing more of the rolling stock in the future! Btw, will there be ALTA passenger equipment or has the ALTA given up on passenger service by 1968?

@@bahnspotterEU in preparation for the 68 Olympics, we actually bought a refurbished a variety of used cars from the US. The ALTA believed they could best the SP from 1958 onwards and invested in higher quality passenger service from Oakland to Los Angeles to Guadalajara. Initially it worked really well, especially after the SP took away dining car service. 1968 would be the last great year for pax service, declining sharply after the games and much moreso after April 1971 when the US half of the system disappeared into Amtrak. From Mexicali south, Mexican pax service continued until the last day of the ALTA in the 1990s.

Great Catch! I'll adjust the decals and fix that. Oh, the complexities of gendered languages.
