    Very good review. It would be great if you did a separate review of only the Black Ridge in an open setup, where you complete the number with 120 mm fan on top and bottom and 120 mm fan on top and 92 mm fan on bottom. Knowing the impact of that would be very interesting, because the Black Ridge is also a very attractive cooler for the Sliger SM550/560 and Ghost S1. It even fits into the Saber Sentry.

    I have the duct tests in a later video in the playlist. So yes, in this clip, no duct kit. Go for the Black Ridge if you are comfy with the vlp ram in order to use the slim 120 mm fan and if your motherboard accepts all of these without mods. Otherwise, it's very hard to beat the l9a as an overall package (primarly in the A4), especially now with the fan duct kit.

    Hi, Nice video, very detailed. Im a bit new and I'm not english speaker so I'm not sure about the intake/exhaust configuration. Just to make that clear for me, the alphenfohn comes by defualt in exhaust and does that mean that the airflow is from the fan to the OUTSIDE (meaning pushing air from the "motherboard" to the cooler and to the outside)?? Changing the fan so that takes air from outside to make it go throw the cooler is intake (meaning flow of air is cooler --> fan --> motherboard)? thx for the video it helped a lot !

  • @Glob3Tech

    @Glob3Tech

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Kevin. Thank you, glad to be of help 🤗 Sure no worries. Exacrly right! So yeah from factory they put the fan as an exhaust - exactly like you said - it blows the air from the motherboard side through the heatsink and then outside. Flipping it in, as an intake, it sucks the air from outside, cools the heatsink and as an added bonus, it cools the motherboard as well which in turn helps a bit with the VRM, chipset temps as well. Any other questions, please fire away 🤗

    Omg I’ve looking for a video with this exact info! Thank you so much! This is my build: Dan a4 v4.1, Asrock B550 mb, Ryzen 5 3600, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8gb, EVGA XC3 Ultra RTX 3070 and of course Blackridge cpu cooler (intake). The most annoying problem I had was the loud cpu fan noise, even while just browsing I kept hearing the rpms going up every 30 seconds or so and the case was quite hot. I switched to the stock Ryzen cpu cooler and temps and noise was quite better, only problem is I can’t close the side panel lol. So I’m currently debating whether to buy a noctua 9mm fan for the blackridge (because of my ram I can’t get a 12mm :( ) o just buy the Noctua L9a cpu cooler pack. Which one would you recommend? I use the pc lightly for work, some CAD programs and mostly I want to try new games at 2k. Thanks again man!

    Hey Gonzalo! Ah my pleasure man, glad to help and thank you for the kind words 🤗 Nice build you have there by the way. OK, with the black ridge with the noctua fan or even the L9a, I suggest that you manually OC the CPU for 1.075v-1.1v or an offset negative voltage since that's why it makes the fan go crazy - the bios keeps pushing too much voltage to keep the high GHz. Have a look please at my other videos in the playlist where I saw a 20C difference on my 3700x just by doing that voltage trick, on the L9a if you can believe it. Since you already have the Black ridge, get that noctua fan since it's way better than the stock BR one and then do the manual OC. 👍 Let me know how it goes.

    @@gonzalocrs You are most welcome🤟 Tough one 😁 I really like both - the L9a it's such a potent low profile cooler for its size while the BR has a lot of potential but only with the 120 mm fan you can unlock it. Since that is out of the equation, yeah the L9a I would go for as long as you do that manual voltage. Plus with the L9a then you can have more RAM options heigh wise.

    @@Glob3Tech Hey man! I'm back to report results for anyone interested. I was able to get a discounted NH-L9A cromax and I can tell the noise and temps reduction are quite significant for its size. I quickly switched the cooler and placed the Alpenfohn fan as a chasis fan under the mobo (exhaust). The noise of that Alpenfohn fan is reeeeally loud, had to switch its voltage in bios to 3-pin and it finally got quiet (I’m gonna order a 9mm noctua fan to use it at regular speed). I took your advice and undervolted the cpu (3.6Ghz) to 1.075 and the noise got a lot lower with temps around 55-60 with light usage (chrome, excel, etc) and 70-75 while gaming. After that I tried 1.05 and temps are 50-55-60 light usage and 70 gaming. Using a regular pc I know that cpu temps should be around 40-45 degrees (light usage) so I would like to ask you if my current temps are okay. Also, should I place the chasis fan under mobo as exhaust or intake? Which one is more efficient? I’m also using another noctua 9mm (25mm thick) fan under the psu (exhaust aswell but I'm not sure what impact that one is having in the chasis overall). Thanks for your patience :)

  • @Glob3Tech

    @Glob3Tech

    Nice one man ! Thank you for the updates! Your temps with the L9a and current setup and tweaks, seem on track. (also what's your ambient temp?) Yeah, try to get another Noctua fan if you can in the future to replace that black ridge fan. As for fan orientation, I would suggest that you place the case fan (below the motherboard to exhaust) to dumb the hot air outside the case downwards, since the L9a does an excellent job at providing some indirect airflow to the motherboard as well, and that air should be collected by the case fan. As for the 25mm fan underneath the PSU, well it would make sense to exhaust as well but here you must experiment to see which would be better - I never tried that fan placement option underneath the PSU. For reference I have discovered that with the AIO, the best results are with the fan placed to blow the air upwards - but again this is for the AIO. With the CPU, you can experiment as much as you can, just make sure that at 3.6 GHz you still have at least +/-5% of its stock performance. But it's up to you, personally I will always trade 10% FPS for a 15-20 degrees C cooler CPU.

The last row and the third row from the bottom show the temperature values with Noctuas 92mm and 120mm as exhaust. The 120mm behave a lot worse than the 92mm (both as exhaust). Cpu fan should blow air on cpu right? Which direction should be the two bottom fans? I read exhaust everywhere but shouldnt heat exhaust at the top? Like hot air wants to rise? Shoulsnt i intake cool air from bottom?

  • @Glob3Tech

    7 ай бұрын

    Hi. If you check my playlist, I did all of these tests and combinations. I would do the one on the blackridge as an intake (sucking air from the outside).plus it cools the mobo as well. Under the mobo, as an exhaust (push air out of the case) since the fan on the black ridge will distribute air over the motherboard as well. The one under the psu, shouldn't matter too much since you don't have an AIO. I would place it as an exhaust to be in tandem with the one under the motherboard. To get the most out of the blackridge, if your mobo allows it and get vlp ram, try the noctua 120mm slim fan. I did a video on that as well.

I have been trying to gain info if hyperx fury modules would fit (34,1mm). theoretically they wouldn't, but from your angle it seems that they could. it would be nice to have a match for the vulcanz and corsair lpx ram combo. can you check this issue maybe? many thanks for the useful vid!

    Thanks! Was looking exactly for this. I even have the same motherboard lol. It seems upgrading from the noctua l9a is not really worth it unless you can use the Noctua 120mm, but vlp ram seems to generally suck, even the good ones seem to have rather low frequencies and timings which is essential for ryzen. I was hoping this could cool a 3800x but now it seems there's not a good chance of that, would probably be fine with a 3700x tho. Thanks for the great work, I know how annoying it is to keep taking apart the dan-a4. BTW I also got the corsair sleeved cables but imho they are not really better than the std ones that came with the psu, since they are thicker and impossible to actually fit correctly in a way that would be pleasing to the eye. So it seems to me it's either custom cables or nothing.
