Don't know if the movie had time to address it but the main reason Temujin did so well bringing people to his side was he treated his subordinates like family and promoted based on merit. Something that basically no one else had ever considered doing in their society before. People of talent and ability who weren't senior enough to be big shots in other tribes realised Temujin was the only option.

yep, most strange quickly rising and than falling empires in history had this, a great leader decide to use ability instead of money and power and corruption as the way to advance, and it works, to be abandoned by the next generation almost immediately, leading to the fall of the empire.

Jebe conquered the Western Liao Empire within a few years while Subutai became of the greatest General in History, winning more than 60 pitched battles.

I haven't seen the film but Genghis Khan was a ruthless leader who committed countless atrocities: countless wars, raping, pillaging etc. Millions of people died due to his actions; civilizations were destroyed. The most famous atrocity attributed to him is the execution of every single citizen in Nishapur.

What the movie doesn't show is that some time after their tribe abandoned them, Temujin aka Chinggis Khan shot an arrow at his half brother Behter for not sharing the fish they caught. Of course we are taught that he and all Mongoloan warriors could fight fiercely, but much more importance is placed on the fact that he could command an army better than any other man on earth. We are taught that he was a brilliant strategist. He had so many rumors spread that anyone who went up against them just KNEW they were outnumbered, outclassed, and outsmarted, so most actually joined up peacefully before any actual fight was needed.

They also had a punishment system of sorts in which if there was a deserter said deserter's entire unit (of ten, hundreds, or even thousands) of soldiers were killed to set an example of loyalty. Seems pretty well made and close to Mongolian stepp life and culture, obviously the movie takes some liberties when it comes to how the story unfolds, especially since we don't actually know many details about Dschingis Khan's early life, except how it's been told by later Khans. There is a point to be made though, that is that temujin spent quite some time in the jurchen tengut kingdom, not necessarily as a prisoner as shown in the movie, but presumably as a soldier moving up the ranks, because when he returns from his time with the jurchens, he's already a powerful military leader with some following.

Interestingly not a single fact in the story needs to mean that Temujin was the chill and cool guy we see presented here. Meaning, a shrewd psychopath could use all these "acts of kindness" as strategies for gaining loyalty. I'm pretty sure you don't form a great empire by being a nice guy, but raather by being a ruthless narcissist with little concern for human life. But this extremely sympathetic portrayal of a warlord is typical of this age which puts morality on its head, and which glories distortions of all kinds.

What happened at the end seems a bit similar to what Agnes Jurati proposed to the Borg Queen in Picard S02. To not assimilate by force but by choice. Rather than killing the captured soldiers he offered them a place in his army, though I wonder what the alternative were. Borg's ultimate downfall was no mercy but in providing mercy Agnes postulated subjects would fight harder, because they chose to, not had to.

Yet, Chingis Haan 's 13th Century values are quite old. The ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom experimented with meritocracy when it employed the genius polymath commoner Imhotep in their unique theocratic system 4,689 years ago. Did you know this commoner was deified to be a God in 525 BCE? The best sourced beginning point for meritocracy is with China's Confucius in 500 BCE - curiously around the same time.

Kinda like he had millions of kids. And his main battle strategy was to kill man woman and child if the opposing side didn't submit. Lol. You need an antagonizer and a hero. People root for the hero. If everytime you have a hero to root for and he gets killed by Subutai and Genhis Khan and company. You wouldn't want to watch the movie. The antagonizer won every battle. Got bored. Stopped fighting. And then died.
