Sanderson mentioned on his podcast that MB Era 2 was embedded on the fact that he wanted to see a detective story tone in a Western-feel setting, and decided that since he's an author, he can do it himself. 😆

“Well, you know,” Wayne said. “It’s like I often say…” “Greet every morning with a smile. That way it won’t know what you’re planning to do to it?” “No, not that one.” “Until you know it ain’t true, treat every woman like she has an older brother what is stronger than you are?” “No, not … Wait, I said that?” “Yes,” Wax said, turning back to his notes. “It was a very chivalrous moment for you.” “Rusts. I should really write these things down.”

I could do Wax & Wayne quotes all day: “I need you to stay behind as we go into those slums,” Wayne said, determined to impress solemnity into his voice. “It’s not that I don’t want your help. I do. It’s just going to be too dangerous for you. You need to stay where I know you’re safe. No arguments. I’m sorry.” “Wayne,” Wax said, walking past. “Stop talking to your hat and get over here.”

Marasi: [gasp of horror] Voice from the darkness: Yes, he was simply too handsome, too clever, and too immensely remarkable in all aspects of his existence to allow to live. It took a hundred men to bring him down, and he killed all but one. His last words were "Tell Wax...that he's a total git...and he still owes me five notes." Marasi: Wayne!

As for reading era 1 first, I'm still for it, cause aaaalll those references and nods are * chef's kiss *, BrandySandy is a master at that. Especially THAT moment that ties into era 1 massively. SPOILER ALERT I think I remember in the subsequent books that Marasi mentioned she isn't really in love with Wax and that it's nothing but an infatuation that she quickly got over with. While I was reading AoL, that bit didn't really come off as insta-love-y because (1) Marasi admired Wax even before she met him, and (2) Marasi was portrayed as a bit juvenile and innocent, so it's understandable that she felt like she's in love with Wax when she isn't.

What I love the most about the second era is the different atmosphere it tries to achieve. I adore the first era, but the plot is sometimes very depressing. I’m not saying it’s depressing in a negative way, more that it constantly pulls on the readers’ heartstrings with the somber and ashy setting and world-is-ending scenario. These facets make the books amazing. On the other hand, sometimes I just want to read a fast-paced and fun story, which the second era excels at. I also like how the themes of exploration and meeting with other cultures are starting to get more focus in the story. It gets more cosmere-aware (no spoilers hehe) and it is awesome! The third book in the second era is in my opinion THE BEST. I can't wait for the last book. :)

After only reading Alloy of Law, calling Wayne a characature is kinda unfair IMO. Whether you like him or not, that's up to each reader to decide for themself, but I felt like there was a lot of depth with his character. Given the context of his backstory and the fact that he still is sending that family money, the hat joke seems less insensitive and more trying to break the tension. He and Wax both have trauma related to firing a gun, and I got the sense that some of Wayne's banter was a bit of a coping mechanism, so with that idea in mind, it kinda seemed alleviating, and not just Wayne complaining about his hat.

Good video and review. I read this shortly after reading the 1st Gen. Mistborn since I enjoyed the world so much and didn't want leave it. Initially I was disappointed that the main character was not a Mistborn but a dual talent, but the wonderful character work and interplay between Wax and Wayne more than made my disappointment disappear rapidly. Still haven't got around to reading the third book in the series yet, but I thought the second was even better than the first and has some really interesting revelations pertaining to the 300 years that have passed since the end of the first trilogy.

Maybe spoilers? I stan Steris. I think she's as clever and intelligent as Wax, but with different areas of focus and interest. They complement each other, and Steris knows what she wants, maybe more than anyone else in the book besides Suit. I think Marasi is still kind of putting Wax on a pedestal and maybe ought to figure out her own goals before finding out whether Wax fits into that. I don't think he does, but that's me. Anyway, now I need to go race through the book i'm reading so I can get to Bands of Mourning. Wheeeee!

And yeah, I definitely remember having a love/hate relationship with Wayne. Sometimes he was just too much. Him and Lopen share that honor. It doesn't help Michael Kramer uses pretty much the same voice for both of them. lol

I found your book review to be on point regarding this first book. At the time Brandon wrote this he wasn't sure there was any interest in more Mistborn novels. He set out to tell a short story (short for Brandon) and test the waters as it were. Hence why Alloy is so different than the other Era 2 books. Needless to say, yes there was resounding interest in Scadrial and the Adventures in Allomancy. He took the seeds of characters/caricatures and fleshed them out in future volumes and started arcs that haven't yet concluded (2019 pre-Lost Metal) Oh, btw, were getting a Terrisman on Roshar in Stormlight "Rhythm of War" Book 4. I'm about 100 pages into Allow of Law and I can tell that I definitely don't love it as much as Mistborn Era 1. I fell for the original series almost immediately, maybe it was the setting compared to this one, but I don't feel as strongly SO FAR about Wax & Wayne. It definitely is more lighthearted and silly with Wayne around and I typically don't love Western's at all so it will be interesting to see how the story develops and how I end up enjoying it.

  • @St0rmBlessed

Wonderful review! I find myself agreeing with many of your thoughts since I was curious if anyone felt the same way lol. I feel sanderson lacks a development with love in some of his books(for example, in first era, vin realizing her love with eland as quickly as she did. Yet, it is not too much of a deterrent). However, I tend to to think the first trilogy was very well rounded and the second might have been a little rushed, you know? The second seemed to be more cinematic and quick with lacking answers to a lot of questions. I do, however, find them very good. I like the storyline, I like the characters(dont be so harsh on Wayne, hes a great moderation in terms of personality contrast betwix the the two haha). After reading these, I definitely am hoping for a mistborn secret history 2 for the sake of answering some questions regarding spook and, as you mentioned, mixed coloss genealogy plus what the hell happened to spook and his influence from kelsier once he was given the hemalergic earring spike that allows him to talk to him. Right? Lol. Feel like there should be a nice rise and fall story regarding good ol lestibornes(aka lord mistborn) and why, in the currency of second era, his currency consists of him with one spiked eye on a side of a coin. Questions that I must know the answers too haha

Wayne is definitely annoying. Steris and Wax makes a good fit. Meresi has some growing pains to go through but I feel like there’s potential there. The tonal shift between the Eras really threw me off and it took me quite awhile to get through the three books. It didn’t help that I’m not such a big fan of the ‘Western’ genre either. But by the end of third book I was starting to appreciate it more. Definitely a reread with the knowledge and acceptance of the tonal difference would make for a much more enjoyable read

I feel the exact same about Wayne, and basically everything you said. It's funny to me because I liked Shallan's humour in the first two SAs, that a lot of people seem to dislike. Her humour, was corny and not as clever as she hoped but that felt intentional and told us about her character, she was awkward and nervous and repressing things, trying to present a jokey front. Maybe Wayne is using humour to avoid issues as well, but I didnt get that from the first book. And more to the point like you said, his humour undercut the drama and came at inopportune times.

Wayne is sometimes more over the top than himself which frustrates me lol.. But I love the caricature feel of him. And I agree on Steris. Minor spoiler: The "romantic subplot" was insta-love followed by insta-I'm-a-badass-of-course-I'm-over-him-dammit which was.. Jarring. Felt like a "connect the dots" plot sort of situation, which is sad because it could have been a realistic and relatable story. But as for Marasi thinking her feelings were love, I think that's quite in character and realistic, because someone without much experience like her would definitely mistake infatuation for love.

I share all of your views expect with regards to Wayne. I definitely like wax more, but I feel like Wayne is not serious in speech; he's speaking in a kidding way, making fun of everything. And since I have a similar personality, I understand him. I feel like you for the wrong impression of Wayne since you're saying he actually means everything he says but he's actually the total opposite.

I strongly disagree with your POV on Wayne, for me without Wayne I would have never finished these books. I laughed so darn much through these three books it’s unbelievable.

I just like hearing people say the name of the book, sometimes it can be a tongue twister

@@ebnovels Yeah, about the question you make at the end of your video. To answer the question, some comments are openly talking about some very important things that happens in the resolution of Mistborn Era 1 (about an specific character, and what happens to them, you know). No pleaseeee!
