Hey bookworms and Lord Ruler fans! I realized I made a goof on Marasi's allomantic abilities. But, I forgot to edit it out and I realize you won't read this anyways and you'll blast me in the comments so, have fun!

Yes, Wax was actually talking to Harmony. Just as with era one, when Wax has his earring in and prays to Harmony, Harmony can hear and respond to him. Just as Preservation could hear thoughts, and Ruin could speak to anyone pierced by metal.

Also, yes. That's Marsh, AKA Ironeyes. During era one the Ruin made the Inquisitors spike all of the feruchemists, so Marsh got an additional full set of feruchemical spikes, because Ruin needed more spikes in Marsh to control him better, since Marsh resisted the most. So Marsh pretty much has all the powers that the Lord Ruler had.

The most important thing I missed reading Alloy of Law originally: The main characters are Wax and Wayne. Like the moon. It's a pun, that nobody in-book ever mentions. Possibly because Scadrial doesn't have a moon?

To be honest, I like all of the Era 2 books better than Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages. I love the atmosphere, the characters, and the stories. Each book just gets better as you go. I can't wait for book 4... it has been so long. Book 2 and 3 came out nearly back-to-back. Also, I read Book 3 before Secret History came out and it blew. my. mind! Also, as always, keep your eyes open for Hoid!

The Firefly comparison is spot on….. I didn’t make that connection up front, but yet I did get that Western / Industrial Revolution feel when reading the book, and Firefly is a really good way to articulate that. Enjoyable book. Short read, pacey, and really fun characters.

Era 1 said that Steel Inquisitors age slower than normal. It never specified what their maximum lifespan is. The crystals that grow atuim were destroyed by Kelsier and take about 300 years to regrow. Marsh would NOT have had access to atium for 3 centuries.

I was a lukewarm fan of Mistborn when it first came out. But a recent re-read made me more appreciative of Sanderson's world. I suppose the first time through, I was grappling with the setting and ideas but later I could just enjoy the world and plot. Then the Alloy of Law came out and I was hooked! It's rare that a new series ventures into "the future" beyond the original.

Great review! Just a couple of things, maybe nitpicks, don't mean them to be. Not a spoiler, the Inquisitor is Marsh. While not specifically stated he has a line, "... but he does my brother's work, and that is something I feel inclined to encourage...." that is supposed to indicate this to us. Also Marasi is just a Misting and not Twinborn. She's a Pulser. And while Twinborn never happened prior to the "Catacendre" they were technically possible, but because the Terris were so strictly mono-ethnic and never interbreed with the rest of the population it never happened. I realize that's splitting hairs and is such a fine point as to probably make no difference, but I'm kind of a detail guy. I have a problem. Love your content Mike, can't wait for the Changes review!

When I first read this book I hated it, I was really hatereading at the end and didn't want to continue the series but felt like I had to in order to be able to continue with SA. I read the second one and liked it more, and am currently reading the third one. I do think they progressively get better, but not my favorite series at all. However, thinking back to the first book, I think I was too hard on it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was. I just wanted mistborn era 1 again and even though I knew it wasn't that, I was still disappointed somehow. Wasn't really fair on the book and I think I should have waited more between era 1 and 2. I still hate Wayne though. :P

Mike have you read "Mistborn: Secret History"? It is about Kelsier between the first and the second trilogy *wink wink*. Read it if you have time as this connects some interesting dots for the Cosmere :) There are no spoilers for the second trilogy in this book as it is something that happens just before.

I’m glad you enjoyed the book, but I’m just not as positive on it as you are. I can see why people might have a blast with it as it’s packed with action, it always keeps you on your toes. I thik this book is dominated by fight scenes which I’m not a fan of in such a huge amount. I even think it was soo hyperfocused on action and dialogue that it just lacked proper worldbuilding. In this book Scadrian was only a term, not an actual place you believe exists. For me Wax was the star of the story as he had a proper character which I can’t really say about others. By that I mean their traits were mentioned and said but weren’t showed. I liked Miles though. I found Wayne to be a clown who got under my skin at first, but he started to grow on me and he continues that trend in later books as well. For me this is the weakest book in the trilogy, but not bad at all means. My issues were all handled in next book expect the action which is more of a preference than a flaw. The second is obviously on a higher level than this, not to mention that ending. That ending is just pure gold! I’m almost finished with The Bands of Mourning which didn’t fall under the level that The Shadow of Self set.

I'm with you. I still really enjoyed era 2 but the characters just didn't grab me the way Vin and Kelsier did. Wayne is awesome but a whole series he does not make. I'm still excited for the next book though. Bad Sanderson is still WAY better than most other books out there.

SPOILERS FOR MISTBORN ERA 2 ALLOY OF LAW: I can confirm that Wax and Harmony spoke to each other in this book. Marsh lives... Also, did you see Hoid?

Interesting perspective. I loved Mistborn (first era) but I didn't like this book at all. I actually think Sanderson's banter is cringe-worthy at best, and at worst it just kills the book for me, like it did here. It must just be me! haha Glad someone enjoyed it.

I finished The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson this morning. I finished the first Era of Mistborn late last year and thought it was okay. I thought Vin and Elend were two of the most boring characters that I've ever read. I went into this new Era with different expectations and they were more-or-less met. It's a cheesy buddy cop novel with guns and magic with a Western twist I've realized that, at least in this stage of his career, Sanderson just isn't great at writing humor or banter, at least in this particular book. These characters are supposed to be witty but I found their jokes to be lacking in nuance and sophistication. There's also a few instances of the bad guy taking the time to give a speech about their grand plans. Also, there's an instance of "fridging" at the beginning of the novel, which is a little lazy, in my opinion. It didn't make me care about this character. I'm also skeptical of the whole religious aspect of everything. If I'm correct, there has only been about 300 years that have passed between the end of The Hero of Ages and this book and...well, the book talks about these religions as if they're fully established but 300 years is SUCH short time to be able to develop a religion. I sound like I hated it. I didn't. I liked the magic system, I liked the appearance of a certain character near the end. It makes me want to keep going. If the book had been any longer, I may have liked it even less. As it stands, it was a fun, quick read. Not a lot of meat on the bone though.

Youre abs right about Vin and Elend, but this is more related to Brandon gaining more skill at writing the more he writes (excluding Warbreaker and Emperors Soul which are both top tier stories altho a little clunky on the dialogue side). This is very evident in Bands of Mourning being a total masterpiece. If you aren't convinced by then id move to Stormlight and if Way of Kings doesnt do it for you then ultimately hes not the writer for you.

I struggled with the first book too. Actually put it down and didn't get back to it for months but it eventually grabbed me and I loved the series from there. Try to get through the first book and see if it wins you over by the end. If not, don't bother with the rest.
