Allison Holker: The Silent Struggle

This week the Lautners are joined by dancer, host, and author of the children’s book “Keep Dancing Through, A Boss Family Groove” Allison Holker! Allison talks about her audition process for So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) and what drew her to her late husband, Stephen "tWitch" Boss. She openly shares how Stephen's ability to give so much love and life to everyone around him ultimately took a toll on his well-being, then talks about the subtle signs that indicated he was struggling with his mental health. Allison and the Taylors discuss the large stigma that continues to surround men's mental health and stress the importance of going to therapy, even when you may feel like everything “feels fine.” Allison explains how she has navigated grief as an individual and as a parent while being in the public eye, then offers heartfelt advice for other parents with kids who are grieving. Finally, Allison talks about her relationship with dance now, her favorite form of self-care, and what she has learned from her children over the years. We hope you enjoy this powerful and vulnerable episode!

Love Allison's honesty and realism. I watched Steven and Allison's TikTok videos almost everyday during Covid Isolation and I looked forward to doing some of the easier motions with them. Have been a Fan of both since I started watching SYTYCD. I was in Shock when I opened up my phone and learned of Steven's passing. God Bless Allison and their children. Beautiful Family and Show of Unity and Strength. ❤

I was taught to always ask how someone is feeling during a physical (I’m a PCP). I really really hope that this is standard practice because I will tell you most people do start to open up if you ask. Some are surprised I even asked.

@@pillesc4466keep asking! My PCP saved my life I feel like. I was there for a sore throat but was in the deepest depression, thoughts of suicide, I even had it planned I felt hopeless but didn’t want to burden anyone. When he asked how I was I just started crying.

What a great conversation! There are so many feelings we experience and Maddox's school sounds like an amazing place to learn! Owning and expressing our feelings is something I wasn't taught as a child. I often heard "Oh....you shouldn't feel that way..." I stuffed my feelings for most of my life and I love hearing the school is teaching children how to identify their feelings and that it's OK to feel them! May you and your children continue to grow and thrive, Allison! Thank you Taylor & Taylor for discussing ALL the things! 💖

Taylor & Tay, well done❤ the questions and the calmness & empathy around those were spot on. Taylor, when you talked about the scale from 1-10 and “the capacity” for it to be different was HUGE for me today. I’m also an “UP” person but when you’re “DOWN” boy do people notice and comment. It’s almost as if you’re not allowed. It is a pressure that is very hard to handle. Now, I understand Allison. God bless all of you. Thank you…🙏🏼

I would love to learn more about the details of the emotional popsicle sticks. Is it based on a specific program? I ask bc I’m too lazy to list the various emotions. My youngest is 18 but I feel compelled to check in with my kids, even via text, for a “color” or whatever. I would welcome anyone to offer emotions to include in my list. (I’m a wee bit too inclined to rage and WTF.)

not everyone should have a podcast - the response you two have after each anecdote and story she has is awkward, forced, ingenuine. the beginning question about steak went on far too long. this was awkward to listen to which is unfortunate because Allison did a great job, no thanks to the hosts.

No idea why the algorithm suggested this to me. I can’t believe 50,000 people watch this. The two doing the interviewing are terrible, just terrible. podcasting is not their forte. I’ve got no idea who the guest is but she’s got nothing interesting to say, and I just couldn’t watch more than 20 minutes of this boring conversation. Could you imagine being friends with these three?
