When your hosts first started this podcast, they knew they wanted to have today’s guests on the show. Harlie and Robin Monroe, sister and mother of Tay’s high school friend Jared, join the Lautners today to discuss the heartbreaking events that led to Jared taking his life and their foundation, The Jared Monroe Foundation, which supports students with bipolar disorder. They go back to the very beginning, when the family adopted Jared, discuss his marijuana use, which acted as a major trigger for his diagnosis, and share details on the various manic episodes he endured. They talk about their unique grief journeys, the importance of having a community around you, and offer words of encouragement to Tay, saying just how proud her friend Jared would be of what she’s doing today.

As someone who lost their best friend to suicide, I deeply resonated with this episode and found it really healing to hear how much you love Jared, Taylor. The way you carry his memory with you is so beautiful. Thank you so much for this.

I was lucky enough to take many classes with Jared in high school and think about him all of the time. He was so sweet and so incredibly funny. Thank you for sharing his story!

I was diagnosed with bipolar in 2012. And it never ends. I’m thankful for you all bringing this up because we often get written off as ‘crazy’ and all hope is lost. It needs to be talked about and is such a touchy subject. Amazing episode.

I lost it when Robin shared when she told Jared's Bio Mom, and then again when Harley shared about Brooke's guilt. Idk why, but I sobbed so much in those moments. This while episode was emotional. 🍋💜

This was such a powerful episode! Thank you all for being so vulnerable and being able to see how Jared’s spirit shines through the squeeze. He is in the roots of the lemon tree and his spirit grows deep within. You guys are definitely making a difference and helping others ❤

As someone with 2 friends who suffer from the same disorder, this was very good to watch. Especially when they said that having friends who really know you, is so important. It totally is! In moments where one isn’t themselves, the friends and family should be the ones who lead one back to themselves and help out.

That was such a powerful moment. You can feel the presence of Jared in the room, the guy was really loved by everyone. Unfortunately sometimes we as friends don’t know what to do in those untypical situations.

One of the most amazing moments during this interview (for me personally) is when Jared's mom said "I want all my kinds happy, no matter what that looks like" - I wish all parents (and parents to be) could hear this statement and have it be a reminder that that is the most important thing - there is so much pressure to have one's children (one oneself as the child) measure up to some standard or expectation that society or their parents or their broader family holds them to; while in reality, rather than being "successful" or "perfect" or "admirable", the best thing someone can strive for is to be any kind of happy, and the best thing you can want for someone you love is their unconditional happiness, even if that picture looks different to what you had imagined it would ⭐️
