    I have so much respect for you guys keeping candlepin history alive by using a track of the original candlepin bowling telecast opening theme song that Don Gillis hosted. I always love watching Don Gillis and his colorful commentary and this in my eyes really pays respect to him and the sport and the sports players! This is awesome and I absolutely love it!

    Had no idea this was even a sport until yesterday and I can’t get enough. Still haven’t figured the scoring out completely but what a interesting sport/game. Looks far harder then regular bowling. I got shit faced and bowled 211 and I gotta be around a 100 average normally I suck. I see no chance of me doing that well with this skinny pin flippity flappity shots. What a sweet find this was

    @@joebly5641Welcome to what we consider regular bowling! Scoring still has strikes and spares (marked with triangles in the corner), but you can also get ten (X) on the third ball - like hitting a free throw, it could make the difference. I still am little good, but I always enjoy it, and hope you get to one day. 🙂

    @@joebly5641 Scoring is fairly simple - think standard 10-pin bowling scoring, except there's a third ball for each box. A strike (two triangles in the corners, all pins down on the first ball) still gets you 10 plus your next two balls, a spare (one triangle in the corner, all pins down on the second ball) gets you 10 plus your next ball, a 10-box (marked by an X, meaning that it took all 3 balls to get all 10 pins down) gets 10 but no bonus.

    It is tremendous to see such high quality candlepin bowling on the interwebs. However, aesthetically speaking, it would have been awesome to have some new pins for the viewing audience. I know for those of us who spent their time with Don Gillis, appreciate the sharp look of the red ringed candlepin gleaming as the ball rocketed in the pocket. Perhaps, this is something for championship organizers to think about for thousands viewing from their iPhones and laptops.

    In the round robin each team bowls eleven three string matches with eight points awarded per match (two points per string and an additional two for the winner of the match). Teams would split the two points in the event of a tied string. In the playoffs matches are determined by total pinfall.

    Do you mean by the pins? There is a slight difference in height between the lane and pindeck. This is to try to prevent rolling pins from coming back onto the lane, where they would have to be removed.

    I only play casually, but the current belief is that a hooked ball is too unreliable in candlepin. The ball's too small and trying to apply rotation to it is finicky and unreliable. There's also no oil on the lanes to "grab" the ball like in tenpin. The most reliable shot is a cross-lane shot so that you're still attacking the pins at an angle.

    So. As you can see, unlike 10-pin bowling. You got 3 chances. If you get all the pins down on the 3rd roll it's called a derby and it's worth 10. Everything else is the same as 10-pin bowling

  • @manofdef

    The X means ten pins down in three balls. In the US, referred to as a ten box. A strike has a triangle in two corners; a spare a triangle in one.

  • @starskunk

    @starskunk

    Scoring works mainly the same as in the 10-pin bowling most people know, except for the fact you have three balls instead of two in each box. Knock all the pins down in one ball (strike, denoted by two triangles in the corners of the box), you get 10 plus your first 2 balls in the next box. Knock all the pins down in 2 balls (spare, denoted by one triangle in the corner of the box), you get 10 plus your first ball in the next box. Get them all down in three (a ten, denoted by an X), you just get the 10 with no bonus.
