The first settlements in the area probably date back to the times of the Etruscans, while the existence of the ancient vicus of Lerona, Roman or pre-Roman, set on fire in the Barbarian or German era, is certain and documented.
Traces of the ancient via Cassia, or via Traiana Nova, of which sections of pavement and two milestone columns have been found, remain of the Roman civilization. The settlement was located on the route of the ancient Rome-Chiusi road: the Cassia before, the Traiana after.
Shortly before 1000 a.D. the new castle was built, which soon entered the orbit of the Orvieto dominion, becoming an important bulwark of the Municipality of Orvieto towards Chiusi, subject to the Monaldeschi and Filippeschi families.
Between 1494 and 1495, during his descent to Italy, while he was headed for the conquest of the kingdom of Naples, Charles VII arrived under the Rupe di Orvieto and, having not obtained freedom of passage and food, with his army he sacked and destroyed everything the surrounding area, including the castle of Allerona.
However, the castle village was able to rise again quickly, so much so that less than a century later, in 1585, the Community had reorganized itself with its own Statute from which the civil, juridical, economic, social and religious aspects of life can still be inferred today. small town.
In 1585 it achieved municipal autonomy and adopted its own statute, written by the notary Andrea Gavanni and published in the general council hall of the municipal building of Orvieto.
Subsequently it was subjected to the dominion of the Papal State and then Italian State.

Beautiful little town, as is all of Italy when viewed on hilltops. I swear, you must take a flock of birds with you everywhere you go, because your intro aerial shots always have a flock of birds flying through right on cue! Gorgeous. I was thinking, if there is one thing that you have shown your loyal viewers, it's that Italy is so much more than Venice, Rome, Naples, Milan, etc. Those cities are full of beauty and history of course, but what you've revealed, and it's the reason why our trip to Italy next year won't include any of those major cities of Italy, is that you don't need a museum or a paid admission to find and experience history. Towns like this are paintings and museums brought to vibrant life, and we can walk right into those landscapes and see them from the inside. Living people live and work and shop here, and when we spend a little time around them, we are part of that history and that living painting for a short time, adding our own brushstrokes to the canvas.

Dear Ken, very glad to see you again and always happy to know you enjoyed the video and for your tuching words.... I'm truly touched to know that, especially considering the thing that... this channel truly started with the idea of showing the "forgotten" and unusual tiny towns mostly, and not the posh ones only. Perhaps they are not "algorythm friendly" nor they are searched and found of course, but I'm truly happy to know there are people like me who enjoy the "underdogs" which underdogs they really aren't if one digs a little deeper into their history and discovery what marvels there are around... After 2 full + years, it's becoming more like a "mission" now than ever before. There's A LOT to still be discovered.... I hope this journey will always continue and will be always a joy.

Allerona is a beatiful little city in a equally beautiful region. I like the way people decorate the front of their houses with plants and flowers. The city is clean and well cared. Couldn't agree more Esther, truly a nice place, quite "hard" to reach I must say, as the roads that lead there are some of the most peculiar and deserted I've ever seen! But it was all stunning around. I had a nice chat with the curator of the little museum in the church and we talked a lot about the history of the churches... he built a small booklet about them which he gave me. Nice day, nice walking in one of those mostly forgotten towns of Italy

I was a little shocked too Sharon, such a great idea indeed... all alone there inside that marvelous church was truly something... and then .. the lights went on automatically to show everything. Truly spectacular. Hasani is now in the towns I walk in and I try to look for her) It's a painting!

@@StillWanderer Back in 2017, I saw a Chevy Silverado near the Museo dell'Automobile di Torino. No idea what the guy was doing there, but I remember thinking «poor guy... no way he's having fun here». And while pickups are a dime a dozen in Canada, what struck me was how big it looked next to your array of Fiat 500s, Lancia Ypsilons and VW Up!s. Yet italians routinely drive Ford Transits, Iveco Dailys and the like, which are as big or bigger than pickups, but still...

Yup Dana, some of those towns are , during the last few years, becoming more and more silent.. people are leaving.. shops are closing due to economic crisis... but this is one of the reasons I want to show them... they deserve to be saved... they deserve to continue living, and this is a little token of gratitude I can make to them... even in this quietness I believe they deserve to be seen as they are often hidden gems!
