I have fond memories of this song, having done it as a quartet some 40 years ago

Jeff, my high school choir was set up as SSAATTBB. For four part, the two sections merely combined to SATB.

Please think about criticizing he's gone away a folk song arranged by Ron Nelson.. some very touching music. Add three mountain ballads arranged by Ron Nelson again. It would be delightful to hear your comments.

That was beautiful, Richard! Jeff, choir parts split similarly to when you see divisi in string parts. With strings you typically split inside and outside stands, but choristers usually know who are the soprano 1s and 2s, alto 1s and 2s, etc.

"Alleluia is a piece for unaccompanied SATB chorus by Randall Thompson. Composed over the first five days of July in 1940, it was given its world premiere on July 8 of that year at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood". (Wikipedia). It was written for the opening of the Berkshire Music Center. Randall Thompson has said he used a single word to simplify the process of learning for the choir who performed it first. They had a short period of rehearsals before the premier. Thompson was very aware of the war in Europe. Serge Koussevitzky, who was the director of Tanglewood, wanted an epic piece. Instead of the joyous work expected of him, the composer produced a quiet and introspective piece. Thompson wrote; " that the Alleluia is a very sad piece. The word "Alleluia" has so many possible interpretations. The music in my particular Alleluia cannot be made to sound joyous. It is a slow, sad piece, and...here it is comparable to the Book of Job, where it is written, "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." The Alleluia has become Thompson's most popular piece. It has been performed by numerous choirs, in particular, high school, college, and choirs participating in competitions.

Jeff, SATB choir compositions will frequently have voices split to produce more complex harmonies when they are needed for only short periods. The director will have to choose who sings what.
