Social etiquette 101: If you are afraid your friendly banter crossed the line for someone, it is okay to pull them aside when you get the opportunity and bring up that you are worried that you did. This will result in a number of responses but if this person is your friend they will most likely be happy that you did come to check on them because it shows that you care. They will say that they weren't hurt by it because they weren't or they'll honestly tell you that they were and appreciate that you came forward to set the record straight. Another posibility is that they will say it didn't but it did. Roll an Insight Check for this one IRL because that's not a good sign. It means that they are afraid of hurting your feelings in return. In that latter case you may find that you may need to get to know them a little better.

Another good tip I live by is: I establish very early on with people I'm getting to know that my humor can tend to sprint towards, and often, Olympic Long Jump over that line like a gold medalist by some people's standards. So if I am even approaching that line with that person, LET ME KNOW. I won't be mad, I'll be thankful and I'll immediately dial it back because I want people to be comfy around me. This does not solve ALL problems, but offering that up makes it known that I am not unwilling to stop making certain jokes if it makes people uncomfortable or insulted. I do this because in my family, you lived and died by your wit, and if you got a quip thrown at you, you had to be able to take it on the chin and throw one just as good or better. This is not the upbringing of most people, and even I myself was the subject of a lot of bullying, so I made that personal rule for myself as a preventative measure.

Being the naive and helpful warlock that I am, who hadn't even realize that I've signed a contract with the Ancient Ones for my magic, I now cast Prestidigitation with my Eldritch Blast to fill the room with the scent of something lovely, like roses or blueberries or caramel, so we don't smell blood at all. Druid, Wizard, Sorcerer, and Monk. Though the druid does tend to spend more time in wild shape than out... And has resulted in our party being treated to both a crocodile and giant spider trying to communicate in mime. Not at the same time, of course. Regardless, we have more squishies than we do meat shields to protect them. Amazingly, we have not suffered a TPK yet because the dice gods have been surprisingly merciful so far. I'm still planning back up characters for this campaign, though. I don't trust the dice to remain merciful...

Had lots of 1 on 1 D&D sessions. My favorites were: 1 - Player travelled out of town for 2 months; when she came back, we had a few sessions to roleplay what her character did with her life. In universe, she had left the party for three weeks while she travelled back to her country to continue her druid training. 2 - Character spent a week dead in-game. When they finally managed to ressurect him, I ended the session. Between then and the next session, I met the player so we could roleplay what her character's life after death was; considering the character had sold his soul to a Devil, it was a lot of fun (for me). The character came back traumatized enough that finding a way to break away from his pact became his #1 priority then. 3 - Weird creepy pillar, makes things that touch it disappear. 1 player decides to touch it. The others weren't as adventurous. So we had a 1 on 1 session for his lonely adventures in the Astral Sea. I have also gotten used to having 1 on 1 sessions to just flash out backstory. They aren't always 1 on 1 since nowadays most times my party links their BS together, "we are brothers", "we met on the road to this city", "we studied together in the same order" stuff like that; it usually is a small adventure dealing with some menial problem where they can get a few hints about the plot of the campaign and start getting used to their characters in an environment where they have full attention, instead of panicking into character traits in the middle of the whole group later.

I play a Tabaxi soulknife Rogue in one of my campaigns. Cunning action pairs super well with feline agility. For context Tabaxi have the race feature "feline agility" that doubles their movement speed. They have a movement speed of 30, feline agility doubles that. So you as a rogue if needing to just get the hell out of dodge or get to someone real quick can go from running 90 feet in a single movement to 180ft. Now imagine someone casting haste on you and getting the mobility feat. What's great about feline agility too is that you just need to do an action without movement to get it back. Which basically as a rogue you want to be sneaky and if your a rogue that uses ranged weapons (I as a soulknife use either my handy dandy never ending psychic energy knives or my longbow that I had enough downtime to learn) this is doubly useful cause you want to hit from a distance in a way that you will always get sneak attack and then on your next turn get feline agility again. So its run, shoot, run, shoot. It is very fun and also the reason I was one of the few people to survive the black dragon that they decided to antagonize.

I'm sure someone has answered these but: 1. Larp, Live action RP, is the nerdiest sword fight you'll ever see. 2. A gas cannon is a cannon that uses explosive gass instead of gunpowder, Carbide Cannons are still used as an alternative to fireworks sometimes. 3. One Person D&D exists, just need a d20 and roll it as often as possible. 4. Seeing as how the OG Wizard only had a d4 worth of HP and a single first level spell to their name and at level 20 could alter reality permanently, I'm fairly sure they were always supposed to be the zero to hero class.

I managed to work out magical outfits for our entire party that were self cleaning, colour changing for simple camo and suitable for all weather, by in character getting into an argument/discussion with a mage guild leader about the uses of prestidigitation in the field, while out of character the DM and I were pulling up sources trying to find the limits of the spell and item design. Another party member was out to inspire societal revolutions and to pull away the illusions of the upper class and how even a basic understanding of magic can make the societal divide a fallacy. She used prestidigitation for formal high tea. Since the changes to flavour and temperature last an hour, more than enough time to eat. I even used it to take quick notes when spying (to be traced with ink later) and even question people and shop using the 'small image' trick to show off who we were after and the outfits we wanted XD

you absolutely can do a 1 player, 1 DM session, and they are AWESOME. A lot of DMs don’t do it because it’s unfamiliar and has a very different “vibe” to normal sessions, but it can be a great way to start a campaign if you want to “play the backstory” or otherwise add a more personal “episode” to a larger campaign, and yes, you can do an entire campaign that way, it’s just a very taxing experience for both the player (since it’s ALWAYS his/her turn) and DM (since they are ALWAYS thinking about how what their making interacts with your character specifically) so most who do play/run it generally prefer it in small doses, like a one-shot adventure or side-story in a larger campaign. I think Matt Coleville of MCDM productions has a video on exactly that topic. You can also play most TTRPGs without a DM if you are playing with a good set of random encounter tables or pre-prepared modules and are good at compartmentalizing so you don’t let your character cheat just because no one’s enforcing the rules. Some older systems like Traveller even had mechanics and rules in the core books designed to help with that. But it’s a completely different experience from a GMed game, since the GM role is being split between the player and the adventure module or random encounter table essentially acting as a video game CPU...which is also why non-DMed games have basically gone extinct: videogames mostly do it better.

hey airier, as a barbarian main, I'm gonna share a broken barbarian build that will blow your mind a bit. goliath race with totem warrior subclass. totem warrior gives you choices between a bunch of spirit animals with nice little effects and choosing bear at lv3 makes you take half damage from all damage types except psychic while raging. goliaths get a race-specific feat that buffs their stone endurance feature to use their reaction to gain resistance to one damage type until their next turn. that alone can quarter damage (at least in the rules we're playing by). the danger sense ability gives advantage on dex saves against spells and traps you see - couple that with the resiliency (dex) feat and you get proficiency in dex saves. combine those, on a successful save, you can effectively take 1/8 damage from fireball. fireball's max damage at 3rd level slot is 48, meaning you can effectively cut that to 6. a barbarian's an amazing tank. another player in our campaign plays a paladin with full plate and even though his armour's much higher than mine (23 v 15), his hp wears down much faster than me, telling me that damage resistance means more than pure AC because many enemies we encounter either get huge bonuses to hit or use spells, many of which don't have attack rolls and hit regardless. And even though barbarians don't get the dpm like fighters with their action surge and many extra attacks or paladins with their smite on crits = double smite dice, barbarians have something more important: high strength means high attack rolls. barbarians are accurate with hits. I'm only at lv10, but I have a +3 weapon, which, combined with strength and proficiency is a +11 to hit. I can almost reliably hit anything

Yes, the original wizard (like old old Old text) actually described the class (technically it was called caster back then) as a class with a drastically tough time growing, but with near limitless potential if they survive, and they grew their power (and xp cost damn it) on an exponential curve, but had the highest max level as well, oh, and back then spells cost XP as well as components. Meanwhile the fighter class of the day was a linear growth that was fairly stable from start to finish and had inter-personal skills to recruit followers, elves were a caster-fighter hybrid class (yup, class, not race) with a low cap on it, and thief was basically how you did anything from open doors to figure out what you got as loot until the wizard actually got to a decent level with a stockpile of xp and gold. Thief was always a “you are better at what you do but suck if its a direct confrontation” type back then, and usually leveled faster than everyone else by cooking the party’s books and pocketing loot to bring more gold and thus xp back than everyone else

30:40 Warlock are also natural ritual casters, means that while your party is sleeping you can spend ten minutes to detect magic, purify supplies, and id item whenever you want. Unfortunately, you only have a limited amount of spell slots and can only switch spells when you level up. This is an advanced class for DnD vets and not a beginner class. Of course, the real fun is the RPG. Dungeon masters could use your class as an excuse to explore the other realms.

They follow the misadventures of a group of English speaking V-tubers that were all novices to D&D, but wanted to get into the game. So they roped in a veteran to be their DM and guide to the game. It's a very crazy, but fun set of videos. Most of the videos are on average around 10 minutes. The only lengthy episode being 21 minutes and 15 seconds long, but thats not till episode 12. So by then you shouldn't mind reacting to a longer episode. Now granted you don't get the full context of the campaign or events, but its the choices of the players that will give you gold to react to. Believe me. Episode 1 is character creation and even that gets ridiculous.

Some things about low PC games. While there is the general joke that playing DnD solo is just being an Author. There is some interesting methods of doing so. Most come into line of a PickaPath style of game play where instead of having d20s and stuff, you generally move it into a smaller dicepool of uses. For example, deciding how helpful X character is going to be towards your goal you flip a coin or roll a d4. 1 they are a compleate arse or know compleatly nothing to do with it or 4 they know everything and can help more so than originally planned.

Your question about 1 person DnD with an A.I. as the Dungeon Master is pretty much the concept of Hand of Fate (1 and 2). I mean the main NPC is the Dealer who refines the Game of Life and Death you playband he shuffles encounter, equipment, and blessing and curse cards, and gives you dice and wheel gambits, and a pendulum, and a card shell game. It's a whole thing.

My rogue definitely fits the edgy and mysterious backstory cliche. Javen Vardis lived in the city of Canthain in an orphanage until he was six. The orphanage was burned down by corrupt guards because the owner couldn’t afford to pay protection money. He spent the next year living on streets and stealing to survive. He befriended Ildan Zolond, another half-elf his age who was in a similar situation. The two of them started working together. They were eventually caught by a retired rogue named Halbar Sidrov who they tried to rob when they were eleven. Halbar decided to be a mentor to them, teaching them how to fight and be better thieves over next two years. He warned the two of them to trust no one. Javen wanted to use their new skills to steal from the nobles who abused their power and the corrupt guards, expose the crimes of said nobles and guards, and protect civilians. Ildan was reluctant to use their skills for helping others, but Javen eventually managed to convince him. They ended up with a large bounty over next year. Javen started trying to learn magic after stealing a tome from a wizard’s house and reading what he could do with it (reason for being an Arcane Trickster). Halbar told them that valuable gems had just been bought by a noble that the two of them often caused problems for. The two of them were caught in a trap when they tried to steal the gems. Halbar sold them out in order to collect the bounty on them. He reminded them he said to trust no one. The noble stabbed him in the back and ordered the guards to catch the two of them, but they managed to escape. Ildan became more violent and was willing to steal from people who they once tried protecting after this. A few months later he suggested to Javen that they start taking jobs from the guards and nobles they fought to get pardoned and make more money. Javen quickly rejected the idea and became angry at Ildan for even thinking something like that. Allies started to be caught by guards or mysteriously disappear over the next year. Javen was ambushed by guards when he went to one of his and Ildan’s hideouts. He escaped them but was ambushed by Ildan. Ildan had secretly been hired by the guards to catch his former allies, and Javen was last on the list. He reminded him that Halbar taught them to trust no one. The two of them fought. Ildan offered Javen one last chance to join him, but Javen refused. Javen barely managed to defeat Ildan, but he couldn’t bring himself to finish him. Ildan told him he was too soft. Javen decided to leave Canthain since he was being hunted and Ildan had likely revealed all of their hideouts. He became paranoid and struggled to trust the few allies that he had left. He took Ildan’s comment about him being too soft to heart and became more willing to do morally gray things to accomplish his goals. He began to wear a mask and call himself Corvus to hide his identity. He tried to keep his age hidden as well so that he would be taken seriously (sixteen at start of campaign), and he always tried to hide his face.

I even allow them to do this if they decide they want to change their class entirely. (Saw this as a thing in DnD 3.5, tried it, liked it, and kept it as an option through 5e.) Also, Rogues are broken. VERY. BROKEN.

I was a warforge so I kinda explained the brokeness away as a weapon used from combat eons ago powered by a core that is repairing slowly so spells are coming back online. It was great fun.

Because you asked @13:13: LARP (live-action roleplay) in this case is like playing Paintball but with foam-ish swords and bows. But Unike in paintball (where you walk away), you play dead if you're killed.

I played a single character adventure with a friend who was a DM. He ran me through a whole campaign only to have my character wake up and it was all a dream at its' end.

For your wizard. Moutain Dwarf level 1 fighter / level X Wizard. Get Warcaster at 5th to be casting spells whle in full plate and shield. Note: there are A LOT of spells with no DC or attack roll that can be used with relatively low Int scores. Just the 14 min to do the multiclass.

I know this isn't D&D per se, but in DnDestiny there is an introduction for new characters that is a one on one with the GM. It's pretty cool.

Meta magics used to only be a wizard thing, they had less slots than sorcerer, and could only gain them back on a full rest unlike sorcerer, but because they locked all their spells in at the beginning of the day they could enwrap their spellwork in metamagic imbuements to make them stronger than they normally would have been. It was part of their whole “we are the ones who shape magic via our understanding of it” class shtick.
