Disraeli Gears and Blind Faith were the next albums I bought after Led Zeppelin's debut. Humble Pie in the Summer of '69 were the first band I heard being called a supergroup. Followed shortly after by another who also released their album that August, Blind Faith. In October, Led Zeppelin II was released and it kinda blew the other two out the water. Nevertheless, As Safe As Yesterday Is, Disraeli Gears and Blind Faith are three of my favourite albums.

i knew him personally in the denver area late 90s-early 2000s. the exception to your comment would be charlie watts. he spoke VERY well of charlie, but towards other rock drummers, he would say "if it aint got that swing, it dont mean a thing". he agreed with me that mitch mitchell was underrated and just plain good, but he was not impressed with 2 of my other favorites (neil peart and stewart copeland). i agree with ginger that bonham is overrated, and ginger and i were in agreement that there is nothing special about keith moon, except the halo effect that dying young brings. the thing he loved about charlie watts was that he showed off the band, and the music, never showing off his own technical abilities. when i pointed out that something very similar was true of ringo starr, he wouldnt agree, and it was a low unintelligible grumbling, whatever he DID say about ringo. it cant be a coincidence btw, that the beatles and the stones both went so far with drummers who didnt show off. as watts said, and ringo's playing echoes, "i show off the music, not the drums".

Ya..... Cream and The Who were kinda in the middle of the pack, when it came to bands. They weren't at the bottom or at the top, like Zeppelin. They were at the level as ZZ Top, Earth Wind and Fire, ELO, Pink Floyd. Even though Floyed made the greatest album ever produced. It was the rest of the albums that sounded the same.

  • @roboi2241

Cream saw themselves as the original band who were going to go down like a lead Zepellin and cause carnage in the still teeny pop world of the 60s , even their name was a provocative nod to their sense of unrivaled superiority, Then not long after they formed and were about to unleash themselves on an unsuspecting world, Chas Chandler brings Jimi Hendrix to London and their impact is stunted before it hits the ground. I don't think they ever got over Hendrix stealing their thunder, certainly Ginger Baker who always tried to dismiss Hendrix as little more than a showman. Probably Zeppelin were the last straw as they were the band in the end who Cream seemed to envisage themselves being, a kind of Beatles for young people growing out of 60s pop towards harder edged music.

Elton John has out-sold Johann Sebastian Bach and whilst he is undeniably great, does that mean Elton is a better composer than Bach? This assumes that the Cream members lack intelligence and have no integrity. If you say so. I like all the bands you've named and I listen to LZ more than Cream, but that doesn't mean Cream isn't the better band. I personally think in terms of musicianship Cream is the better band but I enjoy more of LZ's catalog. Higher sales figures do not a better band make, they don't prove anything either way.

Usually when you boast that you're better than anyone else, you're covering for the fact that you really aren't. Zeppelin quickly mimicked Cream in their very earliest days just to gain popularity, then they mastered their genre and a vast spectrum of musical exploration that Cream simply didn't have the depth and breadth to do. Bruce, Baker, and Clapton appear to have acquired a terminal case of Sour Grapes. It is embarrassing that, like jealous teenagers, they're unable to accept their plight as limited musicians who couldn't find the integrity and character to pay tribute to their obvious superiors.

One could get the impression that Led Zeppelin was a football team who won most of the games when reading through the comments. As if musical quality could be measured in sales figures. As if the purpose of music was about being "higher, bigger, faster" instead of touching your soul and changing your life...or broaden your consciousness.

I have to agree. They have two different sound and to me, appeal to two different audiences. (Though I know a lot of people like both, myself included) I like a lot of different styles and types of music. I find very few artists where I like their whole catalog, it’s about how it makes me feel or makes me think and even relax.

Musicians are a strange lot. Regardless of genre, they are extremely critical of one another. Here are some examples from long ago: “Wagner has beautiful moments, but awful quarters of an hour.” - Rossini about Wagner. “After Rossini dies, who will there be to promote his music?” - Wagner about Rossini. “A composer for one right hand.” - Wagner about Chopin. “Greatly overrated.” - Stravinsky about Vivaldi. “Handel is only fourth rate. He is not even interesting.” - Tchaikovsky about Handel. “I’ve been to the theatre a few times and heard Wagner’s Walküre, from which I carried away memories of two or three glorious minutes and a whole ocean of boredom and utter emptiness.” - Tchaikovsky about Wagner.

Glad to see a Trump commercial here!!! Yeah, Ginger swings and tunes his drums better than Bonham but Bonham is Hammer of the gods so give him that. And to me Led Zeppelin is Hard Rock in the exact same way Hard Bop is to Bebop. Hard Bop in jazz means slower rhythms and more emphasis on the blues as opposed to bebop's determined focus on virtuosity. Hard rock is harder, often slower, and more blues based. Unfortunately it also tends to take the roll out of it, hence the need for The Rolling Stones and AC/DC. I don't think there's a band that swings more than The Rolling Stones. And I have a theory for that: AC/DC and The Rolling Stones have stand-out rhythm guitar aces. That takes some of the weight off the drums but it can't take the whole weight like The Who. 50's rock and roll everything was swinging, I think. Everything that made it. When the form was pure and the intentions were pure and everybody just knew if it went or didn't. Bad asses like Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. There's even a song "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing." It's a jazz song, admittedly, but jazz understands swing- well, it probably invented it!

Baker was a brilliant drummer, just like Mitch Mitchell in subtleties. Bonham was Bonham. Jack Bruce was nowhere near Plant or, for that matter ,Daltry. My opinion only, as I'm a total Zepp follower. Cream or the Who don't even hold a space in my music collection, which ranges from Jolson to the Zepp and back again. Individual tastes are what make the music worthwhile, and I cannot be ar==d with someone bitching about other musicians. Doe's any drummer or fan bitch about Baker? I think he was brilliant, but he's not on my music shelves due to the cr=p voice of Bruce, or their compositions. (My opinion again, like it or lump it, I don't mind or care.) Have a good day, all.
