In my country theese kits are relatively expensive things to get. I have built like 15 kits in 2 years at this point and i feel like i am beeing wasteful and do not care enough about my home economy. I think that modelers buy the amount of kits for the amount of time they wish they had available for building them. In reality, real life takes up most of your time. When you do have time, you might just want to rest or do other things besides model building. I am guessing that even retired people, with nearly unlimited free time, do not want to build models seven days a week. You have to be careful not to fall into the habit of buying "one of everything" , or you are just adding to the work of whoever is responsible for eventually running your estate sale.

You sure are making a good point here. I think similarly to your good self on this matter. But yet there are differences in how model kit builders individually approach a common conundrum. Some builders are kit collectors too and that possibly enhances the build hobby. There is also buying now before a kit is no longer being manufactured and not wanting to rely on one showing up for sale at a swap meet or model show so we dive in when the going is good. Different strokes, as they say. Besides, model subject interests can change and if that happens who in heck needs to be holding kits where interest has waned. Just my 2cents worth.

I buy exactly that amount of kits which satisfy my „cinema in the head“. Tbh, I don’t give an aerobatic fcuk who is going to run my estate sale and how long it’s gonna take. No offense meant nor intended.

A stash is NEVER too big! People who say otherwise, simply "don´t get it¨. I surely would like to see a build video of one of those Skyraiders.

@@ModelMinutes Hi Matt. Can I ask what glue you would recommend for glueing clear parts.. I'm currently working on the 1/72 raf rescue sea king starter kit and I'm using humbrol "clear fix" but I'm having major trouble with 1 of the windows.. Clear fix just doesn't seem to be doing what it's supposed to be doing so I don't think I will be using it any more.. Any advice would be much appreciated my friend. 👍👍

It isn't something to be shameful of, you should be proud! Box collecting is half the hobby, I would love to have a killer stash like that.

The trouble with having a stash, even a small one like mine (a mere 90 or so), is that when you go looking for the next project there are too many options ;) I find myself picking up a kit and spend the next quarter hour mulling over what I need to get to provide the final result desired. I then realise that I don't have a particular paint or need something else to make sure I can finish it. So I put it down and pick up the next kit, so I can mull over what is needed. Ten kits later, something has jogged a memory and I am searching for a kit online for an elusive subject and another day has passed without starting a project. Meanwhile I have found that model and the stash is about to grow :D

Apart from getting the starter kits from Lidl/Aldi I have really been trying to buy only kits that I really want to build. I try and have a few of different types: aircraft, armour and some things like boats/ships but also have a few of the click together kits that are (very) easy to build but you can have fun painting as just a fun build. Would like to do some big kits like the large Lancasters but that is where the price becomes important.

Oh dear. This is like an eerie glimpse into my future! I've only just started and in my first purchase I ordered 9 kits, including 3 double kits for a total of 12 models. Plus I've already got a lengthy wish list for future purchases written up. The hardest part was choosing what to buy. There are just so many beautiful looking kits, and of course a lot of videos showing what can be done with them to entice me even further. In the time between deciding I was going to start, to buying my first lot, I must have spent a good week straight in all my spare time checking stocks of various sellers, checking reviews and build videos for kits that caught my eye, and whittling down a list that fit within my budget. Another difficult thing was actually finding some of the kits I wanted. The stock for a lot of kits are very low in my country (NZ), with often maybe one or two for sale for many of the kits I want. And I'm worried that they might be sold by the time I can afford them. Though at the same time it makes the hunt a little bit more exciting! You never quite know what you might get. A good few of the kits I bought seemed to be the only ones available in my country. I'm super excited about getting into this hobby though. As expensive as it may be to start out, it's something I wanted to do since I was a young lad but never really got around to it, so it's good to finally sink my teeth into something I've always wanted to do. And it beats spending all of my free time playing War Thunder hahaha Anyway, I can't blame you one bit for having such an impressive stash! Given enough time I'm sure I'll be trailing behind on my way to a hefty stash too. And thanks again for all of your videos! I've really enjoyed watching your builds :)

And it's much cheaper than my last big hobby which was modifying cars haha. It makes me shudder to think of all the money I shovelled into that bottomless pit!

Be very careful with that list. I wrote one up 6yrs ago when I had enough money to not work anymore. It's still growing, it's alive & it's becoming a monster. My stash is beginning to frighten me. But at least the WNW kits will be worth something to the kids. Very sad that. You're right about the harder to get kits. I just missed out on two 1/32 Revell Beaufighters on eBay in Vic. It's on the list, oh well, keep looking. I'm reconditioning the surviving kits I built 50yrs ago, can't believe I built this stuff so poorly. Thank god for todays after market industry. Don't sniff to much thinner or glue & enjoy your trip down this rabbit hole. All the best from across the ditch.

The Battlestar Galactica is a Revell boxing of the Moebius kit, and the scale is 1/4105. It is quite a simple build. The painting is what will do your head in, if you want to paint the "ribs" and details by hand. Airbrush is the way to go!

I had the original Battlestar Galactica kit, when it came out in about 1978. It was really expensive, and consisted of, if I remember correctly, eight parts. It was made by Monogram. Looked great, but I did always feel a bit ripped off. Nice to see the Matchbox SAAB 'Tunnan'. I just bought one myself, in a fit of nostalgia.

I have the same addiction. The wife keeps accusing me of starting an air museum. I usually do wheels up. The kids and I hang the planes from the ceiling of their rooms. We actually have one European/Mediterranean theaters, one Pacific theater, one 1950s forward including space. I've passed my addiction to the kids.

Thanks for your, and others, honesty. I can def say that this hobby is addictive! I came back to the hobby last year after many years (last bought one in the 1970s), and purchased the 1/24 Revell Porsche Junior tractor as a nostalgic one off. This led to watching many videos of the Junior during the build, and spending too much time on it. Determined I wouldn't get another till this was finished, but along came the Emhar Bedford recovery truck, then the Heller Ferguson Petit Gris, and yesterday the Revell Bussing 8000 13s arrived much to my delight, yet with a bit of trepidation at the thought of tackling this bad boy! Does anyone have any thoughts re why we buy one after another? Guess it varies for each person, but could it be the initial draw of the box art...the positive reviews...the memories of anticipation when unboxing kits...etc. All the best everyone...think I am feeling better knowing that I am not alone. Modellers blessing: May your kit(s) be unboxed with much relief when finding little or no flash, your parts be safely separated from sprue and fitted together in a most satisfactory way!

I have a stash of 209 unbuilt models, and I did a spreadsheet , and I worked out that 43 of them would probably not get built. But I still have some pre orders to arrive. But I just love the hobby and having a stash is part of it.

So I did a quick count, I have 43 kits in the stash, and 1 on the bench waiting for airbrush time and final assembly and decals. Model building is more my wintertime hobby. you are right, buying is a bit 'easier' than building but also fun. Sometimes you have to buy as kits are released, because a lot of time they vanish and you cant get them anymore.

Well, I guess I have a serious problem too. I've somehow managed to get somewhere near to 150 kits in 1/35 scale alone (some are figure kits) with a few 1/72 scale airfix aeroplane kits too. I also have a number of eduard and aber upgrade sets along with barrels for tanks, artillery guns and spg's. All stashed in crates and hidden away from her indoors.. It was difficult to stop buying because there are so many kits I really want to build. Guess I still have an addiction because I've been eyeing up another 1/35 Kit although I'm resisting temptation at the moment I don't think it will be long before I crack

@@ModelMinutes to be honest, because they're all in crates or in a cupboard I didn't realise how many I actually had. Each kit I buy I take a picture so I don't make the mistake of buying the same kit twice so it wasn't until I counted all the pictures that I realised I had a problem. Even when the wife made a few comments about how many I'd bought I still kept clicking on ebay and model shops looking for a particular model at the price I'd be comfortable paying.. I've had some great bargains haha

I would be interested to know what you do with your models when complete. They take up so much space and my wife rolls her eyes every time I try to find a little niche to put a model into!

Very interesting video. I hope you find the time and muse to build a larger kit. I will always have a special place in my heart for small 1/72 fighters, but I find larger kits so much more interesting and rewarding. Anyway, very interesting and varied collection. As for the question of rigging... IF I would build such a kit I would definately bite the bullet and try to do the rigging as well, as it is a big part of the appearance of those kind of aircraft.

I bought a modest job lot the other week, half have gone back up for sale and I am looking forward to building the ones I am keeping, not being precious is the key. Be honest, if your thing is enjoying the building then don't hang on to the take it or leave it stuff. Life's too short. If you enjoy looking at the boxes genuinely then fair enough. My stash issue is pushbikes having 12 personal ones, missus has around 7. There are about 200 in our warehouse but we give quite a few away to schools and individuals, maybe share the kits around. The Skyraider kit is ex matchbox. I have read that the 0/400 is kind of a difficult build, but I have not built one myself. I like that your lynx kit comes with a cool display base. I wish more kits would be like that.

Impressive stash bro, I've built hundreds of models in my day and many of the same you have in your small and big model stash, I had a stash of about 70 unbuilt models in my garage where I built my models and the neighbor whose garage was ajoined to mine had a fire and the heat warped all my stashed models and so i stopped building models, and I'm so longing to start building again but here in South Africa they are hard to find and way too expensive when I do find a decent hobby shop that sells models and glues and paint so I guess that's it for me now lol, just wishfull thinking 👀👍

450 kits in my stash at the moment. I do take issue with you caling these large kits, though! I've got 21 1/24 aircraft & 16 1/16 tanks. Also got the B-17 & B24 in 1/32, B-29 in 1/48. The Soar Art 1/35 Dora railway gun is on hold until I can find a 2m long area to display it. Also in the stash is a complete BP44 armoured train in 1/35. That should run to around 3.5m long. Those are what i call large kits!

That is a bit more than a stash, that is the entire inventory of a mid sized model store. People like you benefit me I have never bought a new kit. Nearly all my stuff comes from the wives of collectors when they are gone, mostly from the 60s/70s/80s atm but I'm moving into the 90s. It is amazing how many expensive kits people buy and put in a garage I am flabbergasted that people can afford to do that. Mostly I feel sorry for the models I don't think they like being in a box. I am working on a 1/72 Bristol Bulldog at the moment that was taken off the sprue by the original owner, sanded and just put in a bag for 30+ years. I am glad to finally put her together she has waited a long time. The decals have turned orange with age but they are still good I have to modify to a desert colour scheme. It cost me £3 still with original instructions. I enjoy the challenge of having to reconstruct missing components.

I have built that 1/48 Airfix P-40B a couple times. Makes an interesting comparison to the Monogram and Academy kits. I did the Dogfight kit Spitfire and Bf-109 too. A nice combo. I build most aircraft kits in flight mode, gear retracted. Omits some complexity and less stuff to break. My biggest problem is finding room to display them! Sometimes after building, I box them away.

When I was a youngster I built Airfix kits exclusively (they were most freely available in South Africa in the 60s), and a few of them were biplanes. Nowadays I won't go near a biplane, because I'm too old and shaky of hand to do any rigging, and -- unlike then -- I now feel that the rigging is a must. So, I don't buy or build biplanes, much as I love them.

I may have said before that I got rid of 100 kits 3.5 years ago but even after building quite a few since (and buying more), I still have 55 in my stash. I ordered a resin replacement propeller for the Airfix Bristol Bulldog kit from Hannants and "had to" get a P-40 to make-up the order above their minimum order value. Yes us model makers have a "problem" - usually lack of space. The fact you counted two kit boxed together as one kit, is a sure symptom of the addiction nature of kit buying. I'm currently building a Tiger Moth "upside down" because I am unsure of the fit of the lower wing. It is starting to get cold though so I hope I complete it in time before my annual winter build break.

No problems as far as I can see. It's an investment in the hobby. If people only bought kits as they actually made them, manufacturers would probably go out of business with lost sales. Your stash brings you happiness dreaming about future projects and the fun of what to build next. I don't even build models anymore and haven't done for years, but I still maintain a good stash that I dream about building. It's one of the things you can look forward to when 'the time is right'. Love your channel. I've dabbled over the years with the hobby but I recently finished work so now have more time on my hands to, hopefully, do kits to a better standard than previously. Might even buy an airbrush! You can tell I'm in the early stages of this worryingly addictive hobby as my stash amounts to 6 kits. Shameful I know, but I'm working on it. Airfix 1/350 HMS Daring type 45 destroyer Airfix 1/72 BBMF collection (Lanc and two Spitfires but I'll count as one kit.) Revell 1/48 Lunar Module Revell 1/32 Command/Service Module Revell 1/44 Space Shuttle Discovery and booster rockets. This kit is s***e. I did start it ages ago but recently returned to it only because I hate not finishing something. Trumpeter 1/200 Bismark. I bought this 10 years ago with a view to my retirement. I wont start this though until my skill level goes up a lot, and I mean a lot! Even if I do complete it God knows where I'm going to put it, it's bloody massive. You mentioned the dogfight double and that you would probably display them as flying. I've always found it strange that manufacturers give you the option of having an aircraft in motion but only give you the option of a static prop. Why don't they provide a clear plastic disc to replace the prop blades so you can give the impression, with suitable blurry painting of course, of a whirling prop? I know competent modelers would scratch build this but it seems such an obvious thing for the kit manufacturers to provide. Or do some manufacturers do this and and I'm just unaware of it? Anyway, best wishes and happy building in the coming year.

there are some aftermarket manufacturers who do spinning prop parts, but as of yet I've never experienced it as included in the kit

my kit stash currently stands at roughly 600 1/72 scale aircraft. Mainly ww2 aircraft. Also helicopters ww1, jets. Size goes from the tiny me163 komet upto the mighty b36 bomber. Living the dream. Airfix kits are just getting better and better.

I have 200 awaiting attention. Even more counting resin figures. Collecting kits is another part of the hobby. Seeing groups of kits is a thrill from the hobby shops. Making your own shop with every kit of supreme interests. Just got the new Wonder Woman which doesn't compare with the 3D printed stuff. I stay away from huge kits. 1/48 is a main scale of mine but, I don't consider them big. 1/32 scale is big.

Kit no 99 in your stash. I have the exact same Zumbach spitfire. The undercarriage will not fit if you have it retracted. The instructions are basic. My fuselage was warped and the wings left big gaps. The engine was problematic so i left out certain parts and kept the engine covers on. Most parts go on to be inside the fuselage anyway and wont be seen. The pilot is too small to see out of the cockpit and there was an eirleron missing. I contacted airfix and they no longer have parts for it. A mate of mine scratch built the missing part for me. Paints and glue included which was good but it was a struggle to build. Spitfires do look fantastic though. Such a pleasing shape.

Encouraged by your two videos, I also counted my kits and came up with 52. I bought most of them 5-15 years ago, but to get back into model making, I bought three more models. Two of them are P-51B's from Mistercraft, on which I want to test the handling of an airbrush and other model building techniques and the third model is a P-40B from Airfix, which I just had to have.

I do actually have the 1/48 scale of the B-17G Flying fortress of Revell/Monogram. I do have also the 1/87 scale Big Boy (though 1/87 is not that big and yes, it's H0 gauge. Also referred to as OO by e.g. Britain and Japan) is 1 of the 9 trains from Revell (and I do have all 9 of them). I do have also 1 from Japan and this loc runs on batteries. The loc in question is the e-loc class EF66. The bigest plane in scale is a Junkers Ju 87b Stuka from Heller in 1/24 and the biggest plane in size is the Corvair B-36H/RB-36F Peacemaker from Revell (1/72). Most SciFi ships don't have a scale (Battlestar Galactica and Cylon Base star from the original series from Revell), though I do have one that does have a scale. It's the Eagle transporter from Space 1999 in the 1/48 scale (special edition, normal scale is 1/72). Biggest car is a Citroën traction avant in 1/9 scale.

😂 the sad thing is that kit is one of the original releases and not the reissue that Airfix recently brought out again

I think I am one of the few people that don't have an actual stash. My biggest stash was a stash with 2 models. I personally like to buy 1 or 2 models, finish them and then buy more. Anyways, great video Matt, really liked the stash vids, I'd like to see a tank vid in the future ;-), keep it up and stay safe.

Thats how i roll too! Mainly because kits that i want are pretty hard to find

If it's any consolation to you, I am just starting a kit I bought in 1990. Yes. I've had it for 31 years.

I’m going to suggest doing the 0/400 WiTH rigging..it’s about the largest 1/72 thing you need to rig and you’ve got more room to work in. Doesn’t mean you have to do do ALL the rigging 😅

This is a nice collection build the biplane with rigging, build the dog fight double wheels up, I'm not keen on the Battle Star Galactica 😉. I've not stopped buying models but it's hard not too. My wife wants to see buildings & planes built, trains running then she said I can buy locomotives 🚂😑. So you are not the only one with a stash that needs building, finishing and setting up. Actually this is a nice problem to have lots of models so you can pick whatever tackles your fancy 😉.

Finding a 1/48 scale Airfix Lynx for only two pounds at a recycling centre is one hell of bargain! Would love to see an inbox review on that one. Also good luck with these builds.

Dont you just love a bargain- I got 2 Fairey Swordfish Tamiya kits in situations that found them offered on discount sales for 19.95 and 28.95 one at Hobby Lobby and the other at a hobby store the owner didnt have a price tag on- I said thank you and ran like hell upon stealing them both- you know what 1/48 Tamiyas retail normally for!! See Ya!! I was gone, baby!!

@@ModelMinutes Sounds familiar. I have several of those „quick builds“ waiting already for like 20+ years. And I build an average 50 models a year. All scales, all topics (main reason my stash is like it is).

Stash of shame? I'm envious Matt! Still I can understand fully as to why you feel overwhelmed by so many that are dust collectors, I have around 29 built models with another 30 or so in the stash but they're in packing boxes so I do have a place to store them. I do however have a bad habit of having so many kits yet I build the ones I've recently bought.

At least like me you know that they're there if you want to try something different or handle a classic kit, I mean I have Airfix kits from the 1980's/1990's like the He-177, Fairey Firefly, Gloster Javelin and Bf-109K-4 (Heller rebrand). So it's nice to have a variety as you've said in your other vids lol.

I have no more room for kits on my shelfs, I have purchased way too many 1/35 sets. But, I will challenge you to build the B17G, Matt. I have it in my stash aswell...and it would be nice to see it build :)

Some good kits there. I would really like you to build some of the larger scale kits. I get bored with the 1/72 scale fighters that you tend to build a lot. Don't be put off by larger scales. Put it this way. If you are getting older like me (aged 59 lol), your eyesight starts to go. Its easier to see and paint a larger scale kit. That Revell 1/72 B17, personally I would get the new Airfix B17 that has just been released.

There's just something about it . . .

I know the feeling, I’ve got around 35 1/72 model kits sitting in storage, mostly Spitfire kits of various makes and I just haven’t got the time anymore to build them, the problem is I don’t want to sell or give them away just in case I suddenly find myself with the time.

Thanks! The battlestar Galactica is a Jupiter class vessel with a length of 4740ft. Knowing this, making it smaller will give us a scale. Apparently it’s 1/4105 scale

I think most of us have this problem... I sober up only when I count how many years I would need to build them all and realize that I might not live that much! 😓 I'd vote for Battlestar Galactica and the Lanc!

Hmmm... The trouble is, many (most?) of us started when we were children and could only collect what we got for Christmases and birthdays. Buying them ourselves was a luxury and limited in number. I suspect that most of us watching and commenting here have returned to the hobby as (semi) grown-ups, with an income to buy things with and a home to stash them in! Consequently, the 'ooh, I always wanted one of those' has finally been able to translate into 'that's interesting, I'll buy it'. My Achilles' Heel was Modelzone sales, then the discovery of EBay as a model-kit marketplace for all those rare and sometimes-expensive ones. Just counted up my stash, and came to 146 kits unbuilt, of which: 3 in 32nd; 1 in 35th; 28 in 48th; 94 in 72nd; 1 in 78th; 10 in 144th; 2 in 200th; 1 in 350th; 6 in 600th. However I know that I have at least another 35th scale tank, a couple more 200ths, and up to a dozen more cruisers and battleships - so there's a box missing somewhere... I really don't want to think about how much they have cost me...

That's it??????......holy cow, if you have an addiction, I'd hate to see what I have!!!!, And all of mine are 1/48 or larger,......including 2 B-29s in 1/48 and a 1/350 Enterprise carrier that's like 3 feet long!!

I have a very serious problem with collecting. I've now become a "seller" as my wife insisted that I list my kits in a "catalogue". I had over 600 which is "SABLE" (Stash Aquisition Beyond Life Expectancy). The trouble is that I can't resist buying new ones. By the way, HO-OO scale is 1/76 which is why Airfix (and others I think) adopted the scale for their little soldiers and ground vehicles.

OK, my kit collection is growing somewhat uncontrollably of late, stashing them much faster than I build them. I also have come to understand I may be also a collector, since I enjoy having them, as much as I feel bad about it almost all the time. My question to you is: Does it not bother you every time you pick one up to build, even a little bit. Yes, you are going to scale model build, but then again you are also removing a kit from your collection. Particularly the ones you really really like, they are never going to be on your shelve again, part of your collection.

I think I have a problem as well. I have kits in my loft for my retirement in 7 years time. I am still buying kits on eBay, I think I have an addition. So, I don't smoke but I like a drink and buying kits. Do I go to AA ? Is there a help line for the kit additional. Love you channel.

9 min mark, the Dogfight Doubles set isn't completely historically accurate as it depicts a Mk Vb tropical Spitfire of 229 Squadron, RAF Qrendi, Malta, December 1942 and the Messerchmitt BF109E-7 of Oblt Joachim Munchenberg of 7./JG26, Gela, Sicily 1941. The reality is that the 109E-7 would have faced Hawker Hurricane Mk I and II fighters as the first Spitfires didn't arrive until March of 1942 on the besieged island fortress. So to be correct, you'd need a Hawker Hurricane Mk I tropical or Mk IIc of 64, 129 or 185 squadrons to match with the 109E-7 as Munchenbergs 'red hearts' fought over Malta between Feb and June of 1941, when they were moved to North Africa as the Luftwaffe moved on from attacking Malta and leaving the attacks to the Italians. The Luftwaffe returned in April of 1942 in the form of Fleigerkorps XX under the command of FM Albert Kesselring who had been tasked with neutralising Malta as an offensive Allied base. To be accurate, the Spitfire would need to be paired with a Messerchmitt BF109F-4/F-4 tropical...oh dear....just means ya gotta buy more kits

Try handling over 300 unbuilt kitd AND SUPPLIES AND MAGS AND THE Space requirements- That's an addiction- You are well short of the level of a problem which guys such as MOI are faced with, Guv!! : )

Easy to store boxes - where will you find room to display them when completed.? And remember - you will probably buy more in the mean time. Nice stash though. Rigging is a pain but done well looks good. Model on.

I don’t think it’s a shame it’s somthing u should be proud of because people say modeling is not cool or silly and rubbish like that but it’s really cool Btw do u have any tips for getting ur rear back wings (whatever it’s called oops) to sit level

Thanks! I think it is more of a personal guilt because I can't build them all right away. For the horizontal tail surfaces on your plane I normally just hold them in position by eye, but other times I've used something to prop them up (like paint pots etc) which help them hold the right height
