Great information. I was taught 40 years ago that you subtract 4 inches from the length of a recurve bow and 3 inches from the length of a longbow for string length. No one ever explained why the one inch difference. I was always twisting & untwisting to get the brace height right. Thank you.

robert Roth This information is still around. But ATA standard is telling clearly that bowlength of non compound bows are 3” more than string length. Making everything easier to follow the ATA standard.

Thanks for doing your videos, I am enjoying them. They are of course, very basic to begin with but I’m sure will get into more detail as we move along. I would love to see detailed videos showing side by side comparisons of many equipment variables. For example, two exact bows in design and poundage, one is 58” the other 62. What is the effect if each is short drawn 1”? Bow hand movement at release? What affect does Stable core have showing a bow shot with and without it? Compare as close as possible performance results of a Longbow, hybrid, recurve. How is point of impact affected when a bow is short drawn one shot, overdrawn the next shot. There are many variables and many interesting combinations that could be explored. As we get into this, more questions and suggestions will follow. Thanks, Joe Lujan- aka: Azdriheat

Great info, Henry, but I have a big collection of traditional bows from the 50s and 60s,,,,,well before ATA set a 3" standard. Additionally, there is no way to determine the manufacturer's brace height as there is no accompanying literature or historical data to rely on. About the best I can do is put on a longer or shorter string until I find one that best matches the draw weight listed on the bow at 28"???? Suggestions on best determining the brace for these is appreciated.

Henry, I really appreciate your video's thus far but I have one question. Would you do the same calculations for a traditional recurve bow? I read somewhere that the string should be four inches shorter for a recurve bow. Ok, I have a suggestion for another video. I have in my limited collection of bows some that boyers describe as a pistol grip or a medium grip or a low grip bow. Is it necessary to have a different had position for each grip style? Thanks again for your very informative video's

Ron Barr ATA standard making no difference between recurve and longbow. I know that there are also this two measurements with 3” for a longbow and 4” for a recurve around. ATA Standard telling us clearly 3” for non compound bows. So 3” for both.

  • @henrybodnik-archeryandadve2111

Ron Barr We here at Bodnikbows are calculating traditional recurve bows at the same way but I do know that specially in the US bowyers calculating with 4” for them. We do follow strictly the ATA standards in this. No difference between recurve and longbows. Stringlength + 3” for both to define the bowlength.

Cool and informative video as always. I liked the morning wake up intro using the old school coffee percolator pot. You just don't see those anymore. Brings back memories of the family breakfast routine during my childhood. I can actually hear snd smell the coffee percolating as I write this. Weird. While I don't yet own one, I have heard many mention the excellent quality of Bodnik bows and their tolerance for draw lengths exceeding the nominal 28" on some models. In the future, could you please provide some sort of quantitive measurements of the overdraw ramp up on draw weight or "stacking", or perhaps the lack thereof, in your bow descriptions or reviews? I have an honest draw length of 29.5" and favor the newer hybrid longbows. A couple of years ago, I bought a "Black Hunter" 60" hybrid longbow in 40# because it was well reviewed and very inexpensive, but it does tend to stack a bit at full draw. Nothing really obtrusive, but noticable. This can be a problem with many bows on the market today, especially at a reasonable price point. Reasonable being under $500 USD; perferably less for us poor folk. ;) Were I able, I have my sights set on the more expensive 62" Anubis. Can you recommend an overdrawn driven option in your current longbow line-up? Thanks!! Keep up the fine work.

Thank you for the great feedback. Bought this coffee percolator 30 years ago in Canada when I paddled down the Ross River in the Youkon territories. Sind this time this little pot is with me and in use. Good feeling to get so many positive feedback about my Bodnik Bows. In my opinion you got two possibilities to go forward. It`s a question of the invest. Our 60" Slick Stick is an inexpensive Hybrid bow who will handle you 29,5" draw without any problem and without any stacking. This bow is available without any problem at Kustom King Archery. It`s a bow below 400 USD and a lot of archers and bowhunters are using this bow in the US. You cant go wrong with this bow. Please see in this matter the link below: www.kustomkingarchery.com/Slick-Stick-Longbow/productinfo/4742/4363/ If you want to invest more money I can recommend highly the Shrew Bow. It`s an old Michigan brand and in my opinion the best hybrid in the market. For your draw you can go ahead with a short 54" bow and will have no stacking effect up to 30". I`m using a Shrew Classic Hunter II 54" with my 30" draw. All Shrew Bows are also produced by Bodnik Bows. This is a 750 USD bow but worth every single cent. Of course this bows are also covered by the 30 years warranty. For more information please follow the link below or call Tim Cosgrove from Kustom King Archery in Indiana. www.bodnikbows.com/en/shrew-bows/about-shrew-bows Hope this information will help you forward on your way for a new bow. Feel free to contact me every time if you need some more information. By the way! Below you will find the link to the draw force curve of the 54" Shrew: www.bodnikbows.com/images/pdf/classic-hunter/shrew-bow-classic-hunter-2-draw-weight-graph-54.pdf Greets from Germany Henry

Will the brace height have any effect one way or the other on handshock? Thanks.

  • @heikoapel5218

Hi Henry, what happens if I have to twist the string quite a few rounds to get the brace height correct, but then measure the string when it is unstrung and thus also untwisted? I guess the difference between twisted and untwisted string length is not that much, but it could potentially result in a different overall bow length. Might be a rather theoretical question, but would be interesting to know.

Heiko Apel of course you have to take care that string will not change the length. Take the string carefully down and keep the length under control

Very good info, but according to it, the Slick Stick should be a 59" bow, not a 58", since you get the recommended 7 1/4" BH with an exactly 56" string.

@@henrybodnik-archeryandadve2111 There seems to be some confusion with the bodnik whisper strings, I recently ordered two from a supplier here in UK for my 58" Slick stick and when I fitted it it was giving me a huge brace height. I unwound the twists in the string till the string strands were straight and I still had an eight inch brace height ! I contacted the supplier explained the problem sent the strings back, they measured it and it complied with the bearpaw chart string length for slick stick at 139cm ? I asked if they had tried it on a slick stick which they hadnt, they then tried it and found the same problem. They suggested using a string for 60" quick stick which I agreed to. One string I put on another manufacturers bow and is a perfect fit, however I have just tried the other quick stick string on the slick stick and i am having to wind so many twists into it that it is ridiculous. I did not use the string as it is just silly. I may go back to making my own strings again because of this. Is this a problem that others have had with whisper strings and the lengths not matching bows they are intended for 🤔?
