All About Quinceañeras | Mexican Culture on full display

One of the main reasons we visit Mexico is to experience its rich culture. One of the great ways to experience Mexican Culture is to attend a Quinceañera. Whether it be in Mexico or the US, Quinceañeras will no doubt put Mexican Culture on full display.

My mind was blown when I was introduced to the Quinceneras... First a family member spent over $30,000 on his daughters 15th Birthday bash... Beginning with a Rose garden/Water fountains Full dress photo shoot! 2 Limos drove the guys and gals between multiple venues... From the Rose garden to the Iglesia with Full Mass ceremony...Then on to the Rented Dance/ full sit-down dinner with wait staff and a full bar within view, but roped off for over 21 only. 3 huge tiered Wedding cake styled cakes... during dinner entertainment included special dances and videos of the 15 year old growing up ... then after the DJ did special requests for dances a Full Mariachi band came in ... dance with father and daughter, Tribute speeches....the party started at 3pm and lasted till 2am!! Exhausting! So how does a regular family afford this? Well, aunts and uncles each pitching in $2-3000. dollars helps a bit... but it can be very expensive!!

Many years ago I went to a quincieañera. It was my high school buddy's niece who turned 15. My family and relatives do not throw quincieañera parties (We are from Mexico) so being a guest for this type of parties were very rare to me. While the party progressed, I kept being amazed at the level of production and choreography displayed by these kids. At one point I commented to my friend that the party looked like it costed a ton of money and he replied in not the most jovial manner that his sister and brother in law, the parents of the birthday girl took out a loan equal to almost 2/3rd's of the cost of the party and that the other third they saved for many years-escentially coming from their savings. I then asked him if he knew what the cost of the was and he grudgingly said yes, it was close to 30k!! My eyes went wide open! He told me that the parents would be in debt for the next 7 years. He, buying and restoring cars (not exotic cars) for resale and she being a teachers aide. So this low middle class family threw a $30k party that looked like a wedding but wasn't, in one day. $30,000!!! The birthday girl had a day to remember the rest of her life, that is awesome, it is! I mean it had a large mariachi band that played on and off the whole night. It had a rock band, a Banda group, a DJ! They all alternated thru the night. The decorations were almost professional, the food was catered and very delicious. All was perfect! But, what comes later??? She never went to college. Her parents work low paying jobs and she ended working low paying jobs also. In contrast, I have friends from other races and with different persuasions. One Asian family I know has opened a college fund for their kids who are still in grade school. $30k would really go a long way and help produce a doctor, or teacher, etc . Different cultures, different priorities I guess. I am not criticizing this "our culture". I am stating my amazement of how expensive this "culture" can become. Just an opinion nothing else. By the way, did anyone go to La quincieañera de Ruby???..Andy???? Don't lie!! :)....lol!

I had allergy problems too 😉. So sweet and a little sad when your babies grow up and become independent. On the other hand it also bring wonderful rewards like grandchildren and just getting to know your children as a friend. Thank you for a great video.

As always, great video Andy! I have to share a funny story with you about Quinceaneras. My father is Mexican, Mom is a country girl from Nashville. I was born in Germany. I wasn't exposed to my Mexican heritage until I was 9 when we moved to Merced. At 18 I left Merced for the military. After exiting the Military I eventually married a girl from Nicaragua. We had two sons. One day, my oldest son was about to turn 15, I told him about Quinces but twisted the story that it was for young boys going into manhood. I had both my sons fired up and excited about going into their young adult lives as a man! They begged their mother to throw them a quinceanera. When the boys found out I was pulling their legs they were a little disappointed. What was hard to explain was the expressions on their faces when they confronted me. I couldn't stop laughing, they weren't amused. Now, it's a running joke... Whenever one of us has a bad day, we blame it on not having the Quinceanera.

Oh man, what a cruel joke. Well played dad! Haha. If they have sons of their own I bet they do the same. You may have unknowingly started a new family tradition.

So cute and corny. The Mexicans are fun! Love it - they take off their sneekers under the big ballgown and put on high heeled shoes. Too funny🤣

Hello Nate, Thanks for watching. And thank you for the heads-up on my links. I’m currently in Sayulita so I’ll work on it next week. Do you have any links to your wellness retreats?

@@timelesstravelclub6240 Amazing! Sayulita is where we spend much of our time and host our retreats. We will be heading to PV in April and staying there for a week or so and then in Sayu for about a month before our retreat in May. We partner w several locals there including our good friend Bloyd from SayulitaRun (& Hike). Here's a link to a little testimonial about the experiences... we call them "healthy movement retreats" --> kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKt4sNSmZdrcprg.html
