Most of the great Danes I have known have a favorite toy or blanket they hold in their mouth to self soothe, it's the sweetest thing to watch! Mine also "makes biscuits" with her paws like a cat! The contentment just melts my heart ❤️❤️❤️ It's definitely a "Dane thing"

Great Danes are such amazing dogs. Like Gus, my Apollo is 4 years old this year, and he is my protector. He loves most people but if my husband isn't with me and a guy tries to approach me, then Apollo will place himself between me and the guy. He doesn't growl most of the time but he will make sure they know he's got my back.

I love how many similarities Gus and my own Dane, Koda, share! Koda was also born in December 2015, she’s never been a chewer but she’ll go to town nibbling on her toys and bull sticks. She’s obsessed with her tennis balls and does the same batting motions Gus does 😂 she’ll put pressure on top of the ball with her ball to flip it up (like a soccer player) and catch it, then kick the ball around the yard to chase it. She’s also afraid of plastic bags and empty plastic water bottles, and if we ever put a folded cardboard box up in a doorway to keep her out of somewhere, she won’t go near it even though she could easily blow right past it. I love the gentle, goofy personalities of Great Danes, and I can’t wait to get another one 🥰

I have had 3 Danes and all 3 had a behavior similar to Gus's in that each them would be given a large stuffed animal and each of them would gather as much of the animal into their mouths and simply suckle on it. Each of the Danes came from different histories with 2 coming from a breeder and 1 was rescued. the stuffed animals would not be chewed or destroyed but eventually would need to be replaced because of the gobs of dried saliva on the stuffed toys. At any rate, perhaps its an innate Dane trait for calmness and feeling content. All the best for Gus and your family! Thanks for letting me share! :-)

I Soooo ❤️ your videos with Gus! We recently got a new addition to our family! Our Dane Daisy. It's always amazing how much they have the same similarities! She is only 14 wks old and seems like she's grown so much. Thank you for all of your information you put out there. You were in my research before she came to us and still currently. It's amazing to see how much Great Dane community is out there! I purchased your book as well. You both are amazing! Thank you for all your incredible information! Keep up the great work!

My third Dane, 2 year old Murphy, soothes himself with a blanket too. Just holds a bunch of it in his mouth, never saw anything like it before! If he’s whiney we can drape one of the three fuzzy blankets that float around the house, over him and he usually settles down.

@@amandamorrisey271 H, Amanda, my first Dane I got her from a rescue she was the only one that survived from a puppy mill and had parvo when they took the dogs out. I thought maybe it was cause she had no mother around when they took them. She was also the only one that lived out of her litter After I lost her I was so brokenhearted I said no more Danes even though she lived till she was 15 teen, the vet we always seen her said sometimes the parvo can damage there heart but see was 15 and never had any kind of health problems till then. 11 years later I lost my boxer and my husband surprised me with a male Dane puppy that looked just like my Samantha I named him Sammee he was almost 16 weeks old and was his mother and 2 sisters. And he really doesn't care for stuffed animals but loves his blankets! I just got him a super soft one a Walmart and we still cover him every night and he loves he's new blanket!! I thought about cutting it in half but I think I'll just grab a back up. Yes he is spoiled rotten along with my husband's English bulldog. But they are my fur babies. And he bunches his blankets in between he's front paws and holds them in his mouth kinda or alot like cats do and he is 6. Gotta love that big 170 lbs baby!

Hi Zach and Gus! Your puppy book really helped me in my research. I was hoping for some feedback. I recently after 3 plus years I'd talking and deciding I was ready for a dog, life got in the way and a home emergency happened right before the week I was to get my girl. I made the choice to pause adding a Dane to my family. I am struggling with the choice I made. I know it was right, but I still feel bad. My question, how did you know Gus was the dog/Dane you wanted. I'm going after a year of a reset I can finally finally be ready. Even though one can never really be ready. Lol. Thanks for all the content helping me learn and understand! Samantha

She started noticeably filling in around ~12-18 months, but it was really around 2 years that the adult level of definition came through. It just takes longer than you think, and no need to rush it. They’ll get there when their body’s are ready for it 👍
