I notice you say you "waffle too much" a lot in comments etc and I'm sure I'm not only speaking for myself when I say please 'waffle on' as much as you like and can!! All your videos are so informative as well as entertaining with your girls running all over the place while you shoot, I normally have issues with attention with longer vids but yours are so well done and you articulate your point so well I end up wishing they were longer most of the time as that way I could learn even more. I greatly appreciate you not only giving dry facts but talking about the context of the topic as well (whatever the topic is atm) as that makes it easier for us viewers to make sense of any contradictory statements we might hear elsewhere and help us form our own opinion and sense of judgement. Truly thank you for this channel and know that me and a lot of others are interesting in literally everything you have to say that is in any way connected to rat care.

We've been very lucky with introductions, we've only had one rat who was difficult. CleoRatra was the sweetest rat (as well as her sisters the twins) and an awesome mum. We were asked to take in an older foster rat Ruby, we introduced her and Cleo on the bed and they got on really well. When we put Ruby into Cleo's cage she hissed and spat and tried to attack her. We had all 3 girls separated as the twins were nursing 4 week old babies. I think Cleo was being protective of her nieces and nephews. The twins however had no problem with her. We ended up keeping her by herself with lots of visits from the twins and the babies, Cleo never came around and as Ruby was older and a little frail we didn't want to push it and risk her getting injured. When we got four 8 week old babies a year later Cleo again wanted to hurt them. There was just Cleo and her sister Brie so for about a month we had Brie come out to play with the new ones and then send her home smelling like the new girls. It took a bit longer than we wanted because we didn't have a good cage for all of them to go in but when we got the cage Cleo had come around and they all moved in to the new cage together with no hassles.

I do want to, it’s a big subject though as there’s a lot more to respiratory issues than just myco, might do a multi parter or just try and not waffle too much

Really informative and interesting. Can't wait for the rest of the series! I don't have rats yet but I would really like to get does when I do (people seem to think this is strange as everyone wants cuddly boys but it's definitely crazy girls for me).

I have two girls that have been been trouble since around 8 months old. One is constantly testing the other who then fights back making the other girl squeal but then she goes right back to chasing! Introducing a couple younger girls and everyone accepted them except for that one girl who puffed up and attacked. She's being spayed next week in the hopes it'll calm her down somewhat. Also lol, i kept pausing the video thinking it was my girls squeaking haha

Sometimes I get inspiration from what people have named other animals like racing horses or actually I think I found some boat names and paint colour names I loved too. Other times a rat just looks or acts like a particular name and I come up with a show name to go with it. I do really enjoy coming up with the names for my rats, it feels important to capture a bit of them

I'm sorry I'm posting so many questions I'm binging your vids. The only time I can handle my girls for a reasonable amount of time is of they've been asleep for a bit. Is it advised to not wake them up and just let it happen when they're super active? It's basically impossible at this point when they're wide awake

If they seem relaxed then I wouldn’t worry about waking them up now and then. Girls are a little insane...

Any suggestions for introducing my Leroy (intact male born 12/2018) and Míka (spayed female, adopted 11/2018 almost full grown) to my new spayed females (about 6 months old)? Míka has HLD. I had them in two separate rooms, and then they're side by side now. Leroy likes to stare at them while he lays in his hammock

Assuming that everyone is well recovered from spaying (at least 2 weeks) then I would just try a simple carrier method. It is likely to work well and quickly

For pet rats (not breeding rats), would you recommend spaying anyway? For health reasons? Assuming the rat is healthy and you have a good vet. Love your videos.

For me it would depend on the origin and how good your vet was with spays. If your rats have not been bred well with regards to health (eg pet shop or rescue rats) or are from a line with high incidents of mammary tumours (the breeder should be able to tell you this) then spaying at around 6 months is not a bad idea. Assuming the vet has good experience abs high success rates then I would strongly consider it

Hi love. I know this is a long shot, but I've got a problem. Mom is ignoring her kittens. They're about 24 hours old and she was caring for them, but she stopped and several have already passed. I've been feeding them goat milk one drop at a time, but is there something I can do to get her back to feeding them? I haven't had this happen before. Help? Her previous litter was great and she cared for them perfectly the entire time. I've also put another mom she's close with in with her and the babes, but she can't feed them.

I would move mum and babies into a small carrier/cage where she’s in close contact with the babies, leave it in a dark quiet room (you can cover it too as long as there’s adequate ventilation) and check back in say 4-6 hours to see if there’s any milk bands.

Have you ever had a rat go spooked? My most confident buck had a massive spook about a month ago and just shot out of my hand at chest height, shot across the room and I couldn't find him for about an hour, ended up finding him under my book case. Took me probs a week to gain his trust back.

Yes this can happen from time to time, they can hear things on a range we can’t, and smell things that we are not able to. Sometimes these freak them out. It is worth keeping a careful eye if it happens regularly though to try and identify the trigger as fits can sometimes be mistaken for being spooked. Being spooked is the more common of the two though

Hi, i just brought home a boy an a girl. My fiancé an i brought them home they were in the same enclosure with males an females. I have had the boy neutered, but i have to keep an eye on the girl since she could be pregnant from older boy rats that were in with them. I’m confused on how to tell if she’s having babies or not .

If she doesn’t look heavily pregnant then there’s time to be sure she’s not, you can give Alzin or galastop to safely cause then to reabsorb any babies before they are born which is typically better for young mums

Thanks for the vid - incredibly useful! Quick question, we have a doe we have recently introduced to our mischief with her sister. They are around 6 months old. First thing in the morning, she tends to have a moment where she chases one of our others (who happens to be a drama queen). This happens in the evening as well, usually after free roam but there is no issues throughout the night. We've been very fortunate and not really experienced this before. My question is, is this behaviour worth spaying her for? Or do we see if she calms down over time?

I think if no one is getting hurt or stressed then give it time. If it’s causing tension or injury then it’s worth opting for a spay

@@IsamuRatCarethank you! That was going to be my plan of action 😊 no injuries at the moment and They snuggle down together afterwards too... We've only had one doe spayed due to aggression and that worked a treat. She did give one of our (neutered) bucks a piercing he didnt ask for 🙈.

Hi I have a female rat that gave birth this morning I was unaware she was pregnant I moved her and her to pups in to a spare cage i was wondering should she have had more pups by now or is it likely it will just be the two?

Usually if they have stopped for more than a few hours then they are done. In rare cases you can get the second uterine horn say a day or two later but 2 is a perfectly possible litter size. Keep a careful eye on milk bands though s as any less than a trio and they can struggle to keep there milk supply going

Best bet is to find someone who can foster them to their nursing doe, hand feeding is difficult and with a poor chance of them surviving in that first week (better after the first week though at least they have had colostrum, without that it’s very unlikely to work). If you can’t find one then you can use puppy milk, but they need feeding very frequently (every 2.5h in that first week) so it’s no mean feat. A good guide is here rmca.org/Articles/orphans.htm. Getting esbilac is tricky in the U.K. so lactol is commonly used

I'm trying to figure out why my girls have started squeaking whilst fighting recently. They pin eachother a lot but recently they've started squeaking, pretty much every tussle ends up with squeaks. I don't know whether that's normal so naturally I'm anxious XD

How old are they? Particularly younger does do have a lot of play fights. This isn’t something to worry about as long as no one is going injured

Is he bright and active and behaving like a normal baby otherwise? Eating well, no excessive porphryn (red staining around the eyes and nose). Also how long has he been making the noise

I’d keep an eye for a few days. If he seems quiet or off his food get him straight to the vets. Or if it progresses and he looks heavy breathing (any gasping is an emergency vet situation). If it’s not cleared on its own in a few days I’d get to the vets

my boys are antisocial.....my does are little human social butterflies.
