My grandparents lived next door to Michael Landon’s in-laws. So, I got invited to watch the filming one time. It was a location shoot. I met both Melissas. ( Laura And Mary) They were friendly and very gracious. And I met Michael Landon. He had more energy than anyone I’ve ever seen. He directed everything. He also played ping pong 🏓 all through lunch. I was amazed by how hard everyone worked.

As a kid Laura was my favorite. As an adult Mrs. Oleson and Nellie are my favorite. Mrs. Oleson was so talented. So comical, yet believable. Nellie was too. My favorite part was when Percival was teaching Nellie how to separate the eggs and she told him he should write a book "short cuts to cooking." She just kept calling him short. Then when she realized she loved him, she squat walked to make herself shorter and he thought she was mocking his height. Her growing up years were memorable, but when she got that restaurant, that was so great!

To me you could tell even in character that she was nothing like Nellie in real life but also Nellie the character wasn't truly mean, she wanted to be liked and didn't know how to make people like her. On the other hand, Nancy the character was pure mean, lol. 😅 funnily enough, the actress who played her is named Allison too! Melissa and Allison must have been the top girl names in the 60s-70s.

Oh I still love and watch this show - I am 60 years old now and watched it first in the 1970s. Later I watched it together with my children almost every autumn - it is so cosy and comforting !! @@deletedleaf2688 that comes from the books. Since kids grow so quickly, girls had "grow stripes" which was just extra fabric folded at the bottom of dresses. When the girls grew, Caroline would lower the length of their dresses to cover their legs. However, when they went to Walnut Grove, there was no more room at the bottom of their dresses, and there was no time or money to make dresses right away. And the girls had no shoes. So, when Laura and Mary showed up to the first day of school, with very short dresses and no shoes, they were called long legged snipes.

She's fantastic! The fact that she read for both Laura and Mary and was passed is enough to discourage anyone. But to be called back and read for "Nellie" and to be hired on the spot is difficult for any child actor. She knew that she would be disliked around the world. It was a tough hire. But she did it. To her credit, she handled it well, became a world famous villain and still talks about it fondly. She used all of her experiences to help others in need. The woman behind "Nellie Olson" is actually a very nice helpful person.
