I love the friendship/rivalry between Alex and Spencer. It's fun to see how their competition led them both to produce crazy fun art. Hope they are still in touch at least a little.

I am a middle school art teacher, and I thank you thank you THANK YOU for posting these awesome sketch books! I like to show them to my students (although I skip the ones with content I can't show to 12 year olds) so they can see what their books could look like. At this age, we are just getting into using sketchbooks daily and I don't think they yet realize the potential of making notes and sketches and collecting ideas in one place. Thanks again!

good job alex... one of my favourite directors (James Cameron) is also pretty talented at drawing. he comes up with the storyboards and creature concepts. most notably the pantherlike creature in his movie Avatar. thanks for the videos matt. scetchbooks ones are my favourite

Every one of these sketchbook videos, the person has a distinct art style. ME on the other hand, my style's all over the place. Sometimes it's really cartoony, other times it's anime, and other times it's realism. Literall nothing about how I draw people is consistent.

every time the end music blends in I'm like "noooo is it over yet?" :'( :D

I find these videos to be a mixture of raw inspiration and raw discouragement. XD I'll NEVER be that good! I'll get better for sure, but I don't see myself ever reaching that level. And this guy's probably younger than me.

@thegoat4life I find that sketching in blue col-erase, it is less likely to smudge at all as opposed to graphite. It's personal preference (: especially common among illustrators, animators, etc.

@HotaruARC I think it s very cool. also in an artistic way/ way of visual comunication. I think its as important as drawing perfectly.

@Cesilia9 There's pencil lead that's good for roughing out images before you draw them darker or ink them, that won't appear on a reprinted picture. Old comic masters use it even to start final drafts and make side notes directly on the paper so their helpers will have more instruction, but the readers won't have to deal with a messy product. I hope this helps. :)

@qorprincess For sketchbooks, I think the inspiration is not always subject-driven like "I feel like drawing a zombie"...it could be as simple as seeing a pose of a person, a color scheme, or watching a wonderful movie. I guess inspiration comes from life and an artist takes their knowledge and translates it onto paper and whatever results happen, happen. That's why sketchbooks are so fun to look at, almost nothing is planned out ahead of time.

It really IS pretty to look at these sketchbooks! I think I like sketches better than final renderings most of the time. What I want to know is when they sit down to draw, where does their inspiration come from? Is is just... "I feel like drawing a zombie" and then they just draw it... reference photos, only imagination. I know its a combination... but what is in their mind when they JUST grab their sketchbook? Awesome videos... thanks!

@InternetLawman thanks for replying! I guess its just amazing - the work from the imagination... wondering whats going through everyone's mind when they sit down to draw (when you didn't have something in mind to begin with but just want to draw).

@qorprincess you mostly don't just sit and have the ideas come to your head the ideas come to your head and that makes you sit and draw them mostly my ideas come when i'm laying in bed trying to get some sleep which sucks because i sometimes forget them by the morning :P you can also get ideas by browsing art on deviant art there is always good inspiration there !

@qorprincess I'm in art school right now, and I can tell you that their inspiration comes from other artists and life. People say they are also inspired by movies and music as well, although music doesn't really affect me.

@squideatingabanana10 This is the School of Visual arts, in Manhattan, NY. I applied as a first time freshman! :D It's a really great school.. top notch.

@TheGodOfPegana It's okay to put yourself down every once in a while. I know I do time, but I also practice and draw and sketch every day, so I'm steadily improving. You should keep at it, too. Replace the TV with a sketchbook, for instance.

@purpleshocks I don't even own a tv XD. I've been trying to draw seriously everyday too but it's hard to find the time when you have college and work and other artistic interests (I also write). But I guess the most important thing is to have fun with it always. I know my previous comment was mostly negative but I do get inspired and motivated by these videos too. The discouragement is just collateral damage.

I see Alex tomorrow in class, I'll ask him about a deviant page. The boy is just plain nuts. I try to get the students to draw in a classical way, but ya know. Yes he is in the animation program. I will tell him. He is on his own Island.
