This was always my favourite circuit on the calendar when I first got into F1 in the early 90s and it's really sad to see the state that the old forest section is in today. Always breaks my heart when you watch today's cars reach turn 2 and you see the gap in the trees straight ahead where the track used to go. It's just a shame they couldn't have kept the old layout intact for future use. It would have been fabulous to see some of the modern cars of today attempt the Ostkurve.

I think that the new track is a good race track, but in contrast with the old layout it's just boring. The old track was unique, a track that was just once on the globe. I think: If the old track would be there in the Hockenheim forest and also the new layout exist, their would be lots of opportunities: the new track for touring cars and GT's and the old track for F1 and Endurance races (WEC in Hockenheim (Endurance Layout) --> sounds good ;D ) but that's just a dream...

Thanks to the gouvernment there is no old track! Two points were: permission to build the new track and get money from the state: only if the old track would be removed with a following reafforestation of the parts. Anyways, the owners of the track were a bunch of old money grubbing farts. There was never ever a reason to build the new track, even Ecclestone said that.

Hockenheimring is one of the few race track which has been slowly and constantly depraved in the history. In 1932, when they opened the track it was 12km long. It used to have 3 fucking long straights, damn fast kinks, and some slow corners. At the late 30's they shortened it to 2 very long straights, and they built the long-long Ostkurve. At the 60's they built the arena section with a new finish straight. The 2 very long backstraights became around 500 meters shorter. In 1970 they added 2 chicanes at the middle of each backstraights, which was quite annoying. In 1982 they added another chicane in front of the fast and entertaining Ostkurve. At the early 90's the 3 chicanes became much slower. And finally everyone knows what happened in 2002. Almost the same happened to Assen and Masaryk circuit.

@mateagoston7113
8 жыл бұрын
Padek Sewenejt Aha, so I'm the only guy who think F1 needs really different tracks. 95% of today's tracks are mostly torteous with slow corners, with 1 or 1.2 km long straights. This is what I call boring. Today the 12 km Hockenheim would be a great challenge for the engineers to set up the engine and it still would have some fast but non-flatout corners. And you can imagine great slipstreaming battles with some finishes similar to IndyCar finishes. We have 18, sometimes 20 races in a year with 18 or 20 tracks. The opportunities are really wide, but we don't seize with them.

I always heard they changed it 'cause it was "boring" and "not spectator friendly". I think it was perfect for motorcycle racing; lots of slipstreaming and outbraking. Although it was a dangerous track when it rained. The pine trees lining the straights kept the wind from blowing the spray away, making it very misty.
@kwl189
9 жыл бұрын
Spartan168 Loads of run off areas in the braking zones and cars in the time of this video were already a hell of a lot safer than in the early 90s. This track isn't even remotely dangerous to today's standards.
@kwl189
9 жыл бұрын
SmeurkeDeKat How anyone could deem such a legendary track to be boring is unfathomable. Maybe the straights weren't ideal spots for the fans but they still had the stadium section and half of sector 1. Then they had the spectator region after the chicanes. IMHO its better than Monza for spectator space and Monza doesn't get any flak! It was perfect for motorcycles and F1 cars. How many tracks aren't dangerous when it rains? The point is when it rains all the drivers know the limits and risks involved. I would even go so far as to say they embrace it, its what made F1 the pinnacle of racing and why rally drivers are hugely respected. Its because the average person couldn't dream about the sheer bravery and courage required to push when your brain says no but heart says yes. Yeah I did notice that the trees on the straights would encourage standing water which would aid aqua planning and lethal for the drivers. I feel a compromise and cutting back of the trees could be done though. It still gets misty in Brazil, Spa, Japan (both circuits) and Britain, so while your point is valid its not really a reason to wreck such a glorious track.

It wasn't one person, but a chain of unfortunate circumstances that led to it. Political expectations as a compromise to built the new section, pressure and threads from F1 to not race there if they don't shorten the track, and very little time to finish everything until the next grand prix, aligned all the holes in the swiss cheese model.

+James G Hey, mate, nice to see you around here :P All my hopes for F1 are lasted for 2017. I'm really excited, how they want to keep this sport out of ruin. Maybe it's gonna to be good again, Idk. For the tracks, well if Mateschitz will really rebuild the connection to the old Österreichring, I'll never be against Red Bull again, I swear it, never. This may be a dream, but hopefully he'll buy the Hockenheimring, too. This track is making loss since it was rebuilt. Maybe Mateschitz will have a heart, it worked with the A1-Ring (RBRing), it will work with the Hock. "Entertainment". I love to hate this word. The problem about this, is that some fans hate processions, thought they could be more intersting than some overtakes with plastic support. But I've met "fans" who hate the old Hockenheimring, Monza, some even Spa, Monaco and processions. No wonder this sports is slowly dying. The battle Räi vs. Ves (Spain, Hungary) was one the most entertainig battles this year, but no. "We hate processions". Sometimes the F1 community is something to be ashamed for, but than when I'm sick of it, I watch races from the late 90s or 2006 - 2010, when this sport was still good, and FFS noone complained.

@vprmn Not on a rocker mount. You can push or pull from either side of the wheel to get an upshift or downshift. McLaren now uses a similar system with a split lever on a rocker mount. The upper lever does the usual right/upshift, and left/downshift business. Under it is another rocker lever that does the opposite so the driver can work through the gears with the index and middle finger on one hand with other free to adjust things or use the clutch paddles.

At least keep it until 2005 when V10 cars are at the most powerful (but without the stupid tyre rule). Wish we can see F2004s and MP4-20s racing in this iconic layout.
He steers the same as jos verstappen with the thumbs. Great action.
i love the way he used to hold steering wheel and i miss old hockenheim :(
Jean Alesi RESPECT!
I love sound of these old F1 cars..
Good driving. Very committed on corner entry.
the best circuit ever R.I.P
thumbs up if you like more the old Hockenheim Ring
So long it's not a Tilke track it's good but he's mangled this old fine circuit too and is the builder of so many new soulless F1 tracks in the arab states and many more worldwide.

not really , it was quite boring track . In our reality iw would be pretty hard to overtakes in that chikanes, bcs they not slow enough on entry and very narrow (smth what we gonna see next year in Netherlands(god helps drivers to make 1 overtake)). All stadium sector bcs of fast entry was also not good for overtakes. So, yeah , it was very historic and charismatic track(for sure), but lacking overtakes and it will be lacking more in modern regulations. Even Monza with same speed-aproach can give u more opportunity to overtake.(bcs of hard and slow chicanes)
The greatest track of all time #bringbacktheoldhockenheim
I think that the new track is a good race track, but in contrast with the old layout it's just boring. The old track was unique, a track that was just once on the globe. I think: If the old track would be there in the Hockenheim forest and also the new layout exist, their would be lots of opportunities: the new track for touring cars and GT's and the old track for F1 and Endurance races (WEC in Hockenheim (Endurance Layout) --> sounds good ;D ) but that's just a dream...

A combination would be great, because there would be a really fast part but a slow part too. So the setup-spectrum is huge.

The opportunities are really wide, but we don't seize with them.

can't believe that they changed the Hockenhiem - Ring from this. It's much more exciting than the new track...
Ah sigh the days where tyre preservation barely existed and it was all about being on the limit all lap, every lap. Fuck the FIA for getting rid of this track crying about safety. Modern F1 cars are ridiculously safe. It was all about the money for Bernie and fuck Hermann Tilke for agreeing to redo the track.

Spartan168 Loads of run off areas in the braking zones and cars in the time of this video were already a hell of a lot safer than in the early 90s. This track isn't even remotely dangerous to today's standards.

Look at the steering wheel - this car is so wobbly. I'd never even try to take it on a few laps, while Alesi was racing in it. And even scored some points!
The good old times 👍
The person's who decide to castrate this awesome st legendary configuration of this race track, have had a brain damage.

It wasn't one person, but a chain of unfortunate circumstances that led to it. Political expectations as a compromise to built the new section, pressure and threads from F1 to not race there if they don't shorten the track, and very little time to finish everything until the next grand prix, aligned all the holes in the swiss cheese model.
pure hero
amazing sound and track
Good old Alesi !!! Even when he was having to put up with poor machinery. He would still drive it to the max, even if it meant not scoring point !!! Plus i really miss the old classic Hockenheim-Ring layout, it had so much character. The current layout is just so bleeding boring !!!
Legendary driver! Used to play GP2 on windows and it would always default to Alesi and I followed him ever since. Unfortunately I was too young to see his only win
Ah, yeah, didn't spot it but figured out when I was reading the older comments. Automatic gearchanges were used in 2001 indeed.
Wow i miss this track
Never noticed his high grip on the steering wheel til today
circuits like this one, imola, monza, spa, assen, brands hatch and brno should NEVER be messed with!
OLD F1! Great stuff, great stuff..
very nice the good old v10 ;)
I really miss this track and I even don't live far from it. The sound is also very gorgeous, too, looking forward for the sound machine, ha. It is still my favourite track in F1 2001 and rFactor, the last really highspeed track together with Spa, Monza and Mexico now (no Peralta :'|). Thank God I was too young back then, to remember something about the old track, I would probably miss it more.

Acer badged Ferrari V10 engine
we want the old track and V10 motors
i watch today's german grand prix and was so sad at what tilke and fia did to the great hockenheim track........i watched this video to remind me of a once great track
i like more this than the newest.
Tbh, they shouldn't have removed the old track. There isn't any track other than Spa and Monza which features 2-3 long straights. We want to see the cars going to their top speed if possible.

The Last dance on Old Hockenheim.
I miss the Prost team, nice blue cars...
oooh good old times
@vprmn it was an extreme challenge for drivers. combination of high speed straights that required very low downforce setup and the slow, technical stadium section made it a unique challenge the drivers loved. nowadays hockenheim is just your average tilkedrome, with no unique features. sad
The old spirit of the Forest :(
that's a nice sound of v10's
spa. old hockenheim, monza. !!!! best tracks
@tera90s Electro-hydraulic gearbox with paddle actuation. The upshift and downshift levers are located behind the steering wheel in proximity to the driver's index and middle fingers.
@Kabaampje444 The Prost team's wheel used a rocker system with the levers mounted on a central pivot. The driver could pull back on the right lever or push forward on the left lever to upshift.
really sad to watch this ,this track was the best in history of F1 :(
This old Hockenheim would be up there with Spa and Suzuka and Marina Bay nowadays. Yes Marina Bay too. The Singapore GP is my favorite.
Holding steering wheel like Jos Verstappen.
It sounds better on this vid but there is another one on YT which looks better
totally agree with you dude..
Like the sound of this engins :))) awesome :)))

I miss Assen. The new track doesnt deserve to be called the Dutch TT.
I have just watched the video 'How the OLD Hockenheim circuit looks like in 2012'. The back straight to the Senna chicaine is in remarkably good shape.
Can't imagine how the drivers are disappointed now when they see they have to brake before turn 2 and can't go into the forest at 340
oh yes i also remember he was nearly able to pass button but had to stay sixth. If raikkonen's suspension hadn't failed in japan that year he would've been classified in every race
Rebuild this track, please
Fuck, I miss the Old layout of Hockeinheim :(
good ol' V10s..
0:19, bombing down the straight, in my 3.0...
@vertigo8 Yep, its a remaining from his carting days. Thats something they teach you there, Alesi always kept his driving like that.
Ah those were the days. Such a shame they tore up the old circuit :(
what about salzburgring? it was a regular feature on the world superbikes calendar until the late 90s. amazing layout and landscape.
The V10's just sounded sooo much more alive than the current V8's.
I agree.
I hope one day that they will rebuild the old layout and keep it for good this time but that probably won't happen because of money RIP Old Hockenheim
Between 1999 and 2001 they nearly did without DRS anyway. Todays cars couldn't do it even with DRS. Look at Monza last year, IIRC they had trouble reaching 350 kph.
Yes, was allowed in 2001.
lastima que dañaron este gran templo de la velocidad esto si eran circuitos .....
the epic hockenhein :)
