    Hey friend, we do have a big plow for our truck. 2 problems with that currently, 1. It also got buried in the snow while we were gone. Ha! 2. When we plow the snow, it has to go somewhere that’s out of the way because it’s going to stay there all winter until April. We call those areas “snow dumps” Snowblowing helps us get the snow further away from all of our open driving areas. It’s a balancing act between plowing and snow blowing all the time. 😊 Be blessed and Happy Holidays.

    @@FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaskahow much extra space do you have to add to your property to account for snow? Ex: for every 100sq ft of area you want plowed you need 150sq ft extra?

    @@HoneyRowland I don’t think we measure it, but it depends on what you are using to remove snow. Snow blowing into the trees, you don’t need any extra. Plowing, likely 30% more of the space you want cleared.

    When I lived in snow country, I kept a piece of outdoor carpet to lay onto the icy deck and stairs. Much safer to walk on. Now I live in Phoenix Az and the reason we don’t eat much ice cream, is it’s 118 and the ice cream melts before we get it home! I’m so glad you had studded tires on for that pass!

    Yall made me lol with the yellow snow & the frozen trunk turkey. When we lived in Ohio we used the outdoors for fridge and freezer space. During summer Ive heard of folks using their cars to help dehydrate fruit and veggies by cracking the window. When we moved to TN Ive struggled to preserve root veg and maintain our freezer space since it is too warm. Literally 60° the other day. I put a sweatshirt on as I think we've finally acclimated. But I had to buy another chest and upright freezer to help us handle harvest since I can leave animals to rest and cool down outside due to flies..in DEC! Root veg doesnt last here but 2 good months since we dont have air conditioning and its too warm. All that wet snow you have now reminds me of Ohio. We didnt shovel it out as we never dealt in anything over a couple feet for the WHOLE winter. Since this snow is so wet has it changed anything in how you normally do things compared to a dry snow? Do animals need more feed woth the wet snow or does the wet snow insulate better than the dry?

  • @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska

    @FlatTireFarmHomesteadingAlaska

    6 ай бұрын

    The snow load doesn’t change what the animals need for feed. The snow is heavier in months where temperatures range between zero and 20 and lighter in months when it’s below zero(usually Jan and Feb, sometimes Dec- mid march)

    The big plow pretty much just works for the long half mile driveway stretch. All the small spaces need more maneuverable snow removal options. And that snow has to go somewhere when you plow it so it’s not always an option because we might not have a place to pile up snow in certain areas. For example, like the lane for the animal pens. Better to snow blow or use the loader bucket on the tractor to get the snow out of that area. Snow removal is definitely a full-time job here in Alaska. Ha! We appreciate your thoughtfulness. 🫶

    Hey friend, They lived just up the road from us before they moved to Tok. Very nice people. We probably won’t build a vehicle cover for our trucks. We’ve lived here our whole lives and shoveling snow off your vehicle is just part of Alaska life. It’s a lot easier than having to climb on top of a shop roof and shoveled out off when it snows. They are much younger than us old folks. Ha! Our big project this year is to build a barn so our animals have a full-time lovely place to stay. It’ll have a pretty decently pitched roof, we’re hoping to be able to park the tractor inside it. And we might make a little three sided pole barn for the side-by-side. But the trucks are built much more for being able to clean snow off. They have cabs and roofs. Ha! Be blessed friend, thanks for watching. 😊
