Actually, that is so totally Alaskan ingenuity!! I think most people don't realize how difficult and expensive it is to solve problems up here with the lack of supplies readily available. We HAVE to come up with ideas!! But, I love it. Makes me want to be more creative!!

Hi Guys, thanks for the ride a long. I was waiting for Reeve to fall in the spent grain containers, lol. When you go to the lodge to pick up scraps for the pigs, do you go through the bags first to see if there is any good food to keep for yourself? LOL. The waterhole is the best tasting water around that area and I used to get my water there, now I will get mine at Upper Willow Creek here in the Pass. Happy Thanksgiving.

Free 99 is the best!! Here in CT there are certain areas where there are public spring areas. They're not advertised, locals know where they are. Freezers are a good idea, but if it were me I'd try a couple of buckets inside as experimental before filling them up. At least if they freeze, there's not a stinky mess to clean up. ❤

Hey Nora, its the thermal mass of all the grain in the container that slows down the freezing. The buckets eon’t take long to freeze inside an empty freezer. Maybe get an extra day out of it.

I like the freezer idea! Let's go further with it.... Transport it in the totes, then pour the totes into the freezers. Store the freezers elevated, and add a grain chute (think of an RV waste valve) to the bottom of the freezer to fill your buckets and feed the critters. Pouring the totes may be the hardest part, but I have an idea for that too. ;) -Dusty

Good thoughts, but not feasible with the temps here. Any valve situation would freeze without it being heated or blown out. Just like the big grain chute at the brewery. And we don’t have on grid power to do anything like that. And even heating it isn’t enough for the grain silo. 2 days at -20° and the grain chute was frozen solid when we went up there 2 days ago. No idea when it will be operational again.

That is awesome your state doesn't charge for that spring. My state is out of control with taxing everything. If we had a spring like that our state would tax us to put the rock slab in. Then tax us for using it. Then tax us again for people who chose to drive to the spring. Oh yeah..and one more tax so they can create a committee to study the water and the effect it is having on the purple rain doves cry beetle no one heard of until another tax was needed! 😂😂 Thank you for sharing your day with us!

There's a spring near me with great tasting water. Lots of people use it. Some fill up loads of jugs and containers. Since im close by, i don't need to do a 50 or 100 gallon fill up each visit. I'd be interested to see how long your freezers will keep the feed from freezing. I was thinking of either putting something underground or buried in snowpack. The downside to burying underground is too late for this year, and a pain to keep clear to access it. Snowpack might have similar issues. Both would likely also fail to keep the contents from freezing when you get close to empty. But, even if the freezers woukd keep the contents not frozen for three days, it might save you a bit of work as you'd have to fill fewer five gallon buckets and do the freeze outside-thaw in the house thing.

How much does that grain cost? Oatmeal, barley, amaranth and quinoa are good cooked together as a "porage". Shovel it on Reeve. 200 gallons a week? Smart idea with the freezers. It still might freeze up. Meat nectar 🤢 Right tool. Water place. Recalculating. I love what-a-burger. Bug spray year round. Mosquitos are the state bird. Lol. Great resource for water.
