My cousin was a huge Alanis Morissette fan. She had dreads and was a free spirit. A beautiful young woman who cared more about the earth and others than anything. She was 23 when she passed from leukemia.. I always wonder what she’d be doing today. Hearing this was a wonderful trip down memory lane.

R.E.M "automatic for the people" and guns n roses "appitite for destruction", are only another two I can think of I had, still got and rinsed lol and still play. Good music is timeless. The year you were born doesn't matter. Take it from someone that had similar feelings when this song came out and a similar age (I was envying my aunt for being born at a time when animation was just blossoming as an industry. I was 14 or 15.), it doesn't matter in the end. What matters is how much you enjoy it. Though if you like songs of that era, if memory serves, what was popular was Hootie and the Blowfish's "Only Wanna Be With You", Natalie Merchant's "Wonder", No Doubt's... well everything from the album Tragic Kingdom, Blues Traveler's "Run Around", Spin Doctor's "Two Princes", Green Day's "Basket Case". Hanson's "Mmmbop", Spice Girl's "Wannabe", Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise", Third Eye Blind's "Semi-charmed Kind of Life.", Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn", The Proclaimer's "I'm Gonna Be" that's about all I can think of off the top of my head. Keep in mind I'm not saying they're all good or similar, but that's what was played a lot on radios and stuff. I'm avoiding the really overplayed stuff like Brittney Speares, N'Sync and Backstreet boys and the Friend's theme "I'll be there for you".

Despite all the things she's going through and experiencing, she learns to just be herself and not care what anyone thinks of her. I really think she is a genius, but I never saw her iq tests. This album is certainly music genius, though.

During the period if my life when times was hard, my partner dying of cancer, Alanis was there for me and she didn't even know. She held my hand through times when I didn't felt I wanted to carry on. She gave me strength and allowed my emotions to flow through music. Thanks Alanis Morissette for being the perfect escape from my reality. 👏👏 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I do want to meet her and find out what she is like as a person. Also I know I'm not a great or decent singer with certain exceptions but I would still sing karaoke with her, or with her watching. Scary and exciting at the same time. Also her songs could easily be movies although altered for certain ones so a happy ending happens. Great songs to hear while working out, for dances, to relax, or made happy or feel better because of something bad or terrible, a song to hear before dreaming, etc. Wow that's a high cds collection the highest I heard of.

Full of angst and raw emotion, it touched upon all that listens, as I did, on repeat, as we fumbled our way through first love, first heartbreak, betrayal, revelations, ambivalence and so much more. She had to get triple bypass heart surgery on the 14th of November got out of the hospital on the 25th only to die two days later. She said her thirties (the 1990's) was the best years of her life. She had this CD and loved Alanis. I felt like this was the album of my childhood. Anyways this was one of the songs I chose to play at mom's funeral including "Hand in my pocket". Alot of her songs just described my mom's outlook on life. My mom was a blast to be around, never held a grudge, loved to laugh, and I was blessed to be able to have her for 32 years. I lost my other half, my best friend that day. Life will never be the same. The light in my life went out. I love you mom. 🕯️🕊️🌻 ❤️

The cool thing about Alanis is that she wasn't established yet when she went in and recorded this album, as most of us know. So no one told her the rules, no one told her how to be a pop star, no one told her how to create such amazing music. Sure she had help, but this is so unusual for a major label debut to be THIS impactful for a newer artist on the scene. People just don't appreciate the level of preparedness Alanis had IN HER BLOOD for the work she would create in her life, specifically this whole album.

This needs to be pinned, can they do that on KZread?! Artists had something to SAY then. Now radio is one long loop of the same thing. Even when you hear great lyrics, the music is lacking because no one wants to be Too different. And stand out That much. I wish we had another artist to come out of the scene to wake shit up. Musically and Lyrically like Alanis did.

@bi-polarbear3885 I wasn't calling her anything except unique. I was making a point that she didn't come from a pop-star factory and have her hand held... but if you want to be realistic about it, in her peak she would be considered popular music, with strong radio and TV air time, which is the definition of pop music. It's just pop music today is so terrible that you're connecting some other feeling to the term.

@@sirbandit170 "radio and TV air time, which is the definition of pop music". I disagree with this. I would say "pop" music is music PRODUCED for TV and radio (to appeal to the masses) I wouldn't call a hip hop or R&B song that tops the charts a pop song. I'm not good with films but I would call Twilight a film "of pop music". A lot of people criticize it. I'm seeing this in the handful of comments I read; it seems the 90's were loved a lot because musicians were actually working, there was little social media/technology around. (While we're on the subject I reckon we're abbreviating terms too much)

I'm a 40 yr old bloke and have no shame in saying this song (and JLP as a whole) was not only a hugely formative part of my adolescence, but this song in particular is now a huge anthem in my life in general. It's taken me 40 years to understand the words she wrote when she was what, 21/22?! Crazy crazy talent I was fortunate to hear when it was released. I hail Alanis and this album as one of THE best singer-songwriters' outputs of my generation. AM and JLP will live forever, just like all of the other greats

I love your comment. I can validate your point by saying Alanis was played at my childhood buddy's funeral at 29 years of age in 2019. I remember being 4 when jagged little pill came out and that album was seriously a soundtrack to our childhoods. The boys didn't care that she was female, because the music was too awesome for us to care (and that is almost impossible to achieve lol). It felt like everyone around me was taking in the alanis vibes and all these years later to have her be the soundtrack to my friends funeral was so beautiful and cathartic. She is truly a legend and a force. I haven't experienced an era of music that made as big of an impact as Alanis did. And it wasn't just for me, it was a unanimous feeling among everyone. Words of truth. I remember vividly my dad and all of his heavy metal rocker friends uncharacteristically liking her and couldn't help it. Truly a phenomenon. Every time she comes up in a conversation I'm still in awe of how people regard her.

Growing up in the 90's as a male we made fun. I have to say now she is by far the greatest Canadian vocalist male or female. Her range and consistency mixed with honesty and humility is what would make me think she may very well be in the argument for the best vocalist of our time. The range. Its up for debate at the very least. Hey, she made the history of rock and roll collage for a reason!

It's best to see a person face to face and we all have to grapple through life before it is our time to go. Well here we all are again, children of the 80’s and 90’s. All soaking up videos and songs from our youth, and realising they are as good, dare I say it, even better than you remember. And there is a definite longing for a simpler time, when we were more united, looking to the future rather than obsessing over the past. Songs were written about life and the human condition and we loved it and screamed it out from our rooms, cars and break ups along with Alanis. Wherever you are, if you read this, then you know how it felt. Hold on to it and cherish it. Peace homies ❤✌️
