Akathisia: In Their Own Words

This educational video features firsthand experiences of people who suffered akathisia and family members who witnessed akathisia before their loved one's death. MISSD is grateful to all who help increase akathisia awareness. We present this video in memory of those who have suffered the pain and loss precipitated by akathisia.
Akathisia is a disorder, induced by medications, including drugs prescribed as antidepressants, that can cause self-harm, suicidality, suicide, and violence. However, few prescribers know about akathisia, and consumers are often left uninformed. Visit MISSD.co to learn more.

Im glad this video was made, but 911 and hospitals are absolutely no help! If they haphazardly slap a new diagnosis on you as "bi-polar" or having a manic episode, you are now labeled permanently on a hospital record and they try to add more Akathesia inducing medications. It took 4 years after being polydrugged for me to return to normal again. I'm am now a Neuroscience major and I plan of using my education to find more answers and raise awareness.

Very true. I went to the ER, and to a family doctor.. they had no idea what was happening.. they just a made a few guesses because they didn't want to look uneducated.I eventually went a psych doc and was given small amounts of SSRI's.. which made me even more sick... finally after weeks of this hell it began to subside...

Akathesia is mental agony. The brain jumps around like bare feet on a hot sidewalk...one foot up while the other burns...and on an on...thank God for the loving support system that helped me survive.

Akathisia is pure hell beyond description. I still suffer tardive akathisia, as well as lots of other symptoms, years after being told it was safe to go cold turkey off prozac by my gp and a psychiatrist. I still have severe agitation, axiety, ocd, intrusive thoughts, buzzing and burning in all my nerves, muscles and joints, and my head. As well as lots and lots of other very severe physical and mental symptoms. Caused by the psychiatric drugs. I wish i could give GPs and psychiatrists the brutal symptoms of neurotoxicity caused by psychiatric drugs , even just for 1 day. When they still try to deny it really happens. So they could feel the pure torture they inflict on their innocent patients.

TBI 2015. On an off seizure meds. Gabapentenoids, benzo's, keppra, this that and the other one!🤦! Whether it is drug withdrawal from tapering to switch to another med, dosage increases, running out of script on weekend🤦, I suffer from this all the time. It is the worst torment. Horrible.

I have lived with severe akathisia for 5 years. This video does a HORRIBLE job conveying what this is like, and what families should do. Some people, myself included, are literally maimed by these meds. My body has been destroyed, and I know my akathisia is permanent. No amount of hope or “believing things can get better” are going to save me. Advising people to go to the ER is so stupid and reckless. It makes my blood boil when MISSD suggests this. Every single time we’ve gone to the ER, we’ve been met with dangerous advice, gaslighting, misunderstanding, or a combination of all of these things. The only way to prevent people from getting akathisia is to AVOID the drugs that cause it altogether. We need to be teaching people that there are viable alternatives to the meds that cause this permanent hell. Do better, MISSD.

I've been on and off psychiatric drugs since my teenage years. I would usually get on them and as soon as I felt well enough I would get off of them. While trying to figure out how to stop the roller coaster of my life going up and down. I've been on the meds for about 3 weeks and I started talking about getting off of them. My psychiatric doctor looked me dead in my eyes and said Wendy you just started the medication and you're already talking about getting off of them Do you think that is why you have this roller coaster in your life with depression. So I stayed on the medication for about 2 and 1/2 years completely ruined my life. I went from up and down to completely down. It wasn't until I had a really bad episode of akathisia and found out the vocabulary for my symptoms that I came down this rabbit hole. I completely regret associating with the mental health community and seeking out help for mental health & emotional issues. None of these cautionary videos ever came up when I was looking for studies or what to expect with my psychiatric drugs. Everything said it was safe and that you would be experiencing depression or suicidal ideation anxiety but nothing about akathisia and the other ET disorders. When you hear those symptoms without the context of what an ET disorder is like akathisia you just believe that once you get off the meds you'll go back to your same depressive / anxiety world that you just came from. Which is not true akathisia and depression or not the same thing akathisia and anxiousness not the same thing akathisia & withdrawal are not the same thing. to use those interchangeably it's very dangerous. Akathisia + medical gas lighting = ⚰️☠️

I had severe Akithesia when I suddenly stopped taking Kratom. It felt like someone stuck a high voltage cattle-prod in my back and left it there. The pain and severe terror were almost impossible to bear. I did not know Kratom could do that to a person. To this day, I still feel traumatized from those scary days.

These people are describing reactivate depression which is a perfectly healthy response to negative circumstances beyond our control. It's ludicrous that health professionals are so quick to prescribe toxic substances in these situations. They really need to talk to their patients more and drug them less.

The word ‘medication’ refers to psychiatric medications/drugs. The new DSM-5 would also include: Substance/Medication-Induced Psychotic Disorder Substance/Medication-Induced Depressive Disorder Substance/Medication-Induced Anxiety Disorder Substance/Medication-Induced Obsessive Compulsive, and Related Disorder Substance/Medication-Induced Sleep Disorder Sedative-Hypnotic- or Anxiolytic-Related Disorders Substance/Medication-Induced Neurocognitive Disorder. We experience every one of these during psychiatric drug withdrawals that can last months, and years. These are not fun places to be. Only Doctors will never admit to their patient that the very drug he’s prescribing could very wll be mentally torturing or killing their patient. Instead patients are blamed & shamed for their disabling symptoms and drug-induced, very serious Disorders and totally disregarded and ignored. This is what they call ‘medical’ care is in America where it is legal to murder for profit. Just ask the Sackler family or any pharmaceutical executive.

I'm kinda having a panic attack, I'm just finding out I had akathisia about 6 months ago because I started abusing xanax and tramadol. The hospital or the GP didn't know what was going on, blood poisoning was mentioned up but the next day my bloods where fine. It lasted just under 2 weeks and was the worse I've ever felt in my life, never slept never had any food or drink, I thought suicide was the only way out, although I often thought that, I didn't think it's time for me to get out! Having a loved one around made it a little bit easier

I personally knew a few that didn't survive it. I am one that did survive it(barely) and I used to be think the same as you. Hopefully, you don't ever get to go through what I did. Really, seriously wouldn't wish it on anybody. Psychotropic meds should be absolute last resort but they're handed out for mild conditions all of the time which could be dealt with in many other ways.

@@joycejnn that's not true. I've been suffering from akathisia for over a year now. Many people suffer for years. Your experience doesn't make it true to everyone. That's called survivor bias.
