Food for thought: Air Zimbabwe is so unsafe that their only crashes were in 1978 and 1979, when their planes were shot down by missiles; if not for those incidents for which they can't be blamed, they'd have a perfect flight record. They seem to possess a better track record than so many "safe" airlines.

It's not for lack of local demand that the airline is still going. It's the disparity between their economy, and the American/German economies where one might source a new aircraft - or even up-to-date parts. The cost of a new aircraft is significantly greater to that airline, simply because the seller's economy outmatches theirs. Now, if we could somehow produce safe, reliable aircraft within the economy, even just prop aircraft, we might get somewhere.

This brought back many happy memories for me regarding my time living in Bulawayo. I flew from London Gatwick to Harare and then a connection to Bulawayo. As we were landing in Bulawayo, the pilot cranked up the power for a fly around. He spoke on the intercom and informed us that landing had been postponed due to a donkey wandering on to the runway, it’s visible from the starboard side. And there was some ground crew trying to persuade the donkey to leave the runway. We circled twice and eventually landed ten or fifteen minutes later.

A go-around is a safe completion of an approach. This is a very common event in the congested and weather-ridden airspace of the USA. A professional crew always briefs the go-around/missed approach so it is never a surprise when we have to perform one.

Interesting plane - so old but interesting to see when it was new Air Zim obviously were super proud when they first ordered it, having gone to all the trouble to get the custom decor and artwork on the cabin bulkheads and dividers. It's actually nice to see that it spent all the time with it's original owners too - so many others would have wound up with a minor operators and had some crappy upgrade to remove all the original features. It's like a little time capsule back into happier times for both the airline and her nation.

  • @cchris874

Really not sure that's true. Statistically, when an airline with very few total flights has no crashes, can its crash rate really be known? This is illustrated by the Concorde, which by conventional statistics was one of the very safest airplanes in the world, until the day it crashed, when it suddenly became one of the most dangerous. But I get your point. :)

The one thing I love about different people in Africa is how optimistic, positive and bright they are; full of life and happy with what they have. Meanwhile, we have people with 50x their salaries and 100x their facilities in developed countries in need of counselling, therapies and what not. Kudos to the Air Zimbabwean crew and all the people in this video for displaying their positive energy and happiness. Africa is beautiful.

I love the sound of the old JT8D engines and it's a pleasure to see them in action today. This video shows little to nothing about how safe or dangerous Air Zimbabwe is but that's not something I expect to see from Sam. What we did get to see is the unexpected free sandwich that looked better than sandwiches I've had to pay for on flights much longer. The Crew are also a pleasant surprise, they're very authentic and those smiles were real and all over their face, not those fake smiles on many cabin crew that are only put on the lips and are instantly gone the moment they turn their heads away.

Zimbabwe is a beautiful country. Yes, it may have a lot of problems, but the people are friendly and probably very resourceful. The airports looked nicely designed and clean, and had some interesting local products to try. That 737 looked comfortable, and something to really think about, a regional flight on an airline in a poor country gives out free lunch and coffee. Find an airline in the "rich" countries that does that. I'd fly that airline...if I ever get the chance to go to Zimbabwe.

Shame! I used to fly Air Zimbabwe from Harare to London back in the early 90s on that 767 (200 ER). There were two 767s - Chimanimani and Vic Falls. Before that, the 707 serviced the route - via Athens, Greece. The 707 couldn't make a direct flight to London due to low fuel capacity. There was no inflight entertainment on the 707 - not even music. But there was on the 767, the same entertainment system which, it's sad to note, is no longer working. There was a communal screen at the front of each aisle and one movie was screened per night/flight. The airline was run down due to a succession of very corrupt leaders, one of whom - Peter Chikumba - is currently serving a jail sentence for an insurance scam which defrauded the airline. My father worked for that airline for 22 years.

The 707s did fly directly to London. I flew in them many times before the 767s arrived. The Athens flight did a stop in Larnaca. I remember them vividly because my ears used to hurt when making the approach into Larnaca and hated that leg of the flight. My mum worked for the airline for 22 years as well :D.

Due to the most unreasonable boikots of the then Rhodesia(Zimbabwe) these aircraft were leased from South African Airways. They were later sold to that country but were serviced on a regular basis by SAA technicians. Since 1994 this do not happen anymore. Nobody know who do the maintenance work on these aircraft. Presently out of the 6 aircraft they got only 3 is operational. Zim air is prohibited to fly internationally with their aircraft. This is only one tiny aspect falling apart due to greedy politicians.. 😌

AM A ZIMBABWEAN LIVING IN RUSSIA and ooooh my God i used to complain about how economically unfortunate we were until i got here. I mean Russia is better but weather politics and general poverty , i now miss home. Better the poor but sunny healthy country than some so called roses we see in painted pictures yet its not what it looks like. Zimbabwe is a practically better place to stay. my opinion.

Steve Vill The two big Malaysia airlines incidents were not the airlines fault. The MH17 incident was human error, which could have happened to anyone. MH370 was the pilot’s fault, only fault on MH’s side was that they shouldn’t have let him fly in such mental condition.
