I have found just cutting the top off first, then peel the dried layers off with your fingers is easier. No need to cut into it at all.

Always start by cutting the onion right in the middle. That will allow the layers to slide out without being compressed by a tighter diameter compressing it to the breaking point

You don't need to do the long cut to skin then. Just slice. The skins come right off.

I usually remove the thin membrane between the layers. This helps to avoid tugging out all the onion out of the crust when you bite into it.

Those look amazing. Must make them asap. Questions - I don't buy buttermilk because I'd have to throw the leftovers down the drain. I have a bag of powdered buttermilk. Could I reconstitute and use that? Hubby only likes his rings made with cornmeal. Could I mix some cornmeal into the panko, or would that make them gritty and gummy?

  • @cookingwithcoit

It’s nice that you include the problems cutting onions I have had the same problem for many years scoring the precious outer ring. . One day I cut the onions and wanted to wash away a bit of the boldness as I was using cooking onions ; I threw them in a water bath . After I finished making the batter, etc I took the onions out and surprised that they popped out and the onion skins came off effortlessly. Hmmm? Watching your techniques I thought to myself why score the onion why not take the whole onion and cut off each end, save them for stock. Then cut the onion into rings leaving all the skin on. Put into a zip lock and make them later as I always use onions. That worked well the skin was soft and came off easily. But that middle , So I redid and popped the centre out that I use for everything and put the rings into a ziplock back for tomorrow. Well, the onion relaxed ( did it dry a little or did it relax) onions are under pressure to be good. Haha. Removing the centre the rings separate . Wow. Secondly, going into the air fryer the delicate rings and crumbs falling off. Yep , I’m a newcomer to air fried. I thought air chilled; freezer. Followed your instructions but then I put them into the icebox for a day ( I did eat some while I was having fun). Frozen I took them out and why use spray oil I brushed them with avocado oil. Really happy how they turned out. Thanks to your video and all the steps , effort and love for onion rings I believe I will never deep fry an onion ring again.

My first try was a disaster...been cooking for50+ years...Nothing worked. The breading did not stick at all. Also,I am wondering why we are putting spices in the flour when you say that the flour is not really meant to stick. Spices are expensive these days. It seemed that everything was very dry, I did the 10 minutes, so back to square one! I think I am going to try to moisten the rings with water, dip in the flour, and proceed from there. From all of the cooking I have done the dredging and having the flour first was there to make the coating stick. Any help would be appreciated.
