Look - I didn't learn anything about air compressors, but what I did lean was I can practice my painting technique with water. Sounds like "Yeah, you should have know that" , but no, I didn't. Cheers - a thumbs up for you.

Being a beginner with painting I found out my compressors valve outlet on the tank was restricting air flow so I put a ball valve type and it worked a lot better, I would buy one as large as possible due to the more they run the hotter they get thus more moisture build up, I worked in a new furniture upholstery business, main compressor stuffed up so they hired a compressor with a VW motor which couldn't cope and motor blew up, we had to get one with a diesel engine just to run 5 staple guns, 2 nail guns and seldom spray booth work.

Wow- cleared up a heap of myths for me including needing a 200+ litre tank to fully spray cars which is a relief because I bought a 3 hp 50 litre 323l/minute FAD compressor today. The first thing I noticed over my old 2.5 hp 40 litre 125 l/min direct drive unit was when the compressor kicks in the new one holds the pressure the whole time and only takes a few seconds to catch up after finishing. Whereas the old one would lose pressure and then take 2 minutes to refill. I was really worried I'd bought one with a too small tank but this segment cleared it up for me- very relieved. Thanks! Great to see some quality Aussie paint videos btw!

Hey it's been two weeks. Have you properly sprayed with this new comp? Any conclusions? I imagine a 50L regardless of output would pretty much be fully running while spraying a hood or roof on a car? I'm looking into getting a comp and gun right now for my R33 project and my budget at most would allow a 50L unit and the cheapest gun I could get.

  • @AndyPutt1

@@Kryndon64 It depends on what the FAD is. Free air delivery is more important than tank size. If it's around 200 or below it might struggle. 323 l/m does it easily. I'd recommend belt drive too. Mine runs off 15 Amp and cost about $900 AUD. I had a cheap 40 litre one FAD 125 l/m that I tossed for the new one and there was no way known that would cope with even painting the bottom of a door. Plus you need not only a decent compressor, might get away with a cheap gun but you also need to stop moisture getting into the paint, so need at least one decent water trap. A weaker compressor will also make more heat which will add to moisture in the air. . Another thing to consider is tank pressure. alot of the cheaper ones operate at 110 psi whereas the better ones are 145 so in effect you have more air for a given size and less buffer in which for the compressor to stay ahead of. A 200 litre tank might give you 4 times as long over the 50 litre before it kicks in but then it needs longer to fill up again too after you've stopped.

@@Kryndon64 Yeah sprayed with it and it's great. No problems whatsoever painting a car. If you had a 200 litre tank it would take 4 times as long to kick in but it would also take 4 times long to fill. It's not like in order to spray you need a compressor that won't kick in while you are spraying in order for it to work. That might be true for a 120 l/m FAD compressor, because it can't supply enough air but not with a 320 FAD unit handles it fine it would be well under a 50% duty cycle.

Hi Dave. I want to progress from 1K can painting to 2K gun painting, but just start off with doing touch-up work on scratched or damaged panels. I also want to upgrade my air compressor, and get something portable I can also use for detailing and drying. What is the minimum FAD you would recommend for small paint repair jobs? Could I get away with 100L/min, for example?

3 Gallon and not very powerful.....it can be done (but you may have trouble dialing in the gun) but you will have to constantly wait for the pressure to rebuild. Get a LVHP gun and maybe see if you can score an expansion tank. That is way small and low HP as well. I would say 1.5 HP, 6 Gallon (bigger the better) as a bare minimum to run a gun. 30 Gallon 2 HP ideal. You can actually kill the compressor or shorten the life of it because of the size, duty cycle, and power. It will be running almost constantly if not constantly.

9:20 , don't agree , you don't need a "much" bigger compressor , almost the double size , to be used with an HVLP ( rather those used with a LVLP , which you've called conventional gun ? that's not either ) . Conventional are those that implies High Volume . 9:28 " High volume is a bit different than ...........Low Pressure ..(???) , you're slipping all over the place ! You have a paint garage/business but you're not well prepared about technical details .

PEOPLE, stop kidding yourselves, you want to paint cars you need a big ass stationary compressor like the one he has in his shop, this guy just wanted a joy ride knowing that little piece of shit compressor is going to be humming all day long cause it cant produce enough air, so don't be cheap and shell out $1500 -2000 dlls for a big compressor.

the little compressor in the video is insufficient for a hvlp gun . look on the chart the gun comes with . most hvlp guns require a compressor that's cappible of producing 16 cfm @ 40-60 psi constant . that thing won't even come close . a proper compressor will run you about a $1000 . and that's barely meeting the minimum requirements of the gun. please do more accurate research before putting inaccurate info out there for people to see. although people shouldn't use you tube as a primary source of information.

I didnt say that compressor would work with HVLP. I mention that you would need a compressor double the size for HVLP at about 9:30.

DId you watch the video with the sound off? He clearly stated that it would NOT run the HVLP gun.

customspraymods Could that size compressor run an Hvlp gun for small jobs such as furniture for very small periods of time? Or just better off getting a bigger compressor?
