How to Choose an Air Compressor
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Air compressors are used for a wide range of jobs around your home, garage or shop. When choosing the right air compressor for your needs, there are a few key questions to consider: How will the compressor be used? How much available space do you have? Is portability critical? Mike Finnegan, host of Finnegan’s Garage and Roadkill, walks through the key factors to consider when choosing an air compressor and discusses the difference between psi, cfm and scfm air compressor ratings.

Very Important info here folks. I did not know all these particulars when I sent compressor shopping. Bought a small 6 gallon Craftsman to do light garage/hotrod work. Hooked up my die grinder with a cut off wheel and it didn't run for 30 seconds. I had to wait until tank pressure built back up. What a pain in the butt. Looking for a much better one now arming myself with the right knowledge. Thanks for sharing brother. Cheers from Motown/Dearborn.
Great advice, makes sense, easy to follow, and please keep "coaching" us, you're great at it. THANK YOU!
This helped me out a lot, thanks!
Great video. Very helpful. I agree the background music noise could go. But still very helpful.

Very helpful and well-done vid. Thanks for posting it 👍🏽
Excellent information. Thank you.
I noticed in one of your latest videos you had to ditch that compressor when you got a media blast cabinet. At least now you have the type of compressor that men use. LOL! You did provide some good accessory info in this vid. Thanks for that.
Great informative video!! Thx

Just got my Campell Hausfeld VT6271. Perfect size and portability for my home. Time to sell the old Husky 30 gallon with a measley 1.7 HP!
Nice and informative video.
I would like to also add that belt driven compressors are generally more quiet then direct drive ones.
Awesome video!
Thanks 😊

Can confirm, I bought the 29 gallon Harbor Freight special and regret not going larger. I am currently using it to sandblast car parts (suspension), and the compressor runs constantly and can't keep up. Using 80 PSI in the line, 150 at the tank, guessing I need at least a 60 gallon.

it's not the tank size that matters it's the pump, a very big pump on a small tank works very well.
I'm after the smallest, quietest option that can handle spray painting, airbrushing and cleaning. If it can handle nailing and stapling that's good too, but otherwise I already have tools for grinding, cutting and drilling. For spray painting I'm happy to use either HVLP or LVLP.

Interesting to see that since this video he's upgraded to an Eaton 7.5HP 80 gallon compressor. I was trying to find that video again and found this one.
Those information is really good I dont know much so i buy a 100psi 3 gallon compressor thinking I can use it for small minor paint job as I spray but it turned out the tank is too small I am sending you this message all the way from South America Guyana
Is there an advantage to higher horsepower? I have a working 5hp compressor motor from an old rusted tank so will it improve performance if I swap out the 1.5hp motor on a newer compressor with the higher hp motor? Great video.
Thanks this video just made me more confident about my recent purchase of a c&h 80 gal two stage answered a lot of questions for me

Good, informative video. Though there are lots of user profiles in between full-time grease monkey and soccer-ball filler. One aspect is portability. What's best if you do both automotive and carpentry with lots of different tools split between shop, outdoors, and house? But in short stints, not full-time.

thanks for the video, I’m confused .... but how do you make sure that the tools we already have (or want to buy more tools) that they are/will be “SCFM” ?? I went to CH’s website and looked at their “air tools” and never saw SCFM listed in their specs sheet for the tools ... so where can we buy SCFM tools - i wanna replace the only 2 tools that i have with SCFM tools. Do we google SCFM tools and it will list the brands that carry/make them ? I’d like to buy all matching brand air tools. Sorry, but YES i am a noob. Please help me understand.

I just wanted to know whats a good tank size thats sufficient to pump tires, other videos never explains that. Thank you for explaining that bro
@korgied
4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much anything. Tires are only run around 30-35 PSI or so. Even cheap compressors will do 125 PSI. The higher the CFM the quicker a compressor will fill large tires, but you don't absolutely need a high CFM for tire filling. That's why you can buy tiny 12v air compressors. Low CFM but they can still handle the PSI required. Just takes them some time to do the job.

Hello Does air compressor work by pulling the surrounding air in and I plug it in with 120v socket or do I need to do a full install by routing hoses to the outside of the garage etc? Basically how do i install a air compressor? Thank you
I don't understand something. I started watching a lot of videos about compressors, because I was looking to pick up a smaller, portable unit that I could take with me in the truck when I travel to go work on my Dad's house. Watching these videos was the first time I ever heard people telling me that I can't do...something that I have done more than once. You see, my "big" compressor that I don't want to lug around on the road is only a 20 gallon, 4.8 CFM Campbell Hausfeld. And I swear to you, before I upgraded to my current 20V orbital sander, I used a pneumatic orbital sander with that thing all the time. I completely sanded down TWO vehicles for paint, using that 20 gallon compressor and DeWalt pneumatic orbital. Now, granted, the first one was a Jeep CJ. But the second one was my RAM 1500 Mega Cab. The second one is a HUGE vehicle. And I did not have any problems with the motor providing me plenty of air from beginning to end. It is confusing. Why does EVERYONE on the internet seem to believe that you cannot do that job with that compressor?
@kimchee94112
Жыл бұрын
I've done it with 20 gal, but slower waiting for the compressor to catch up. Actually not that bad if you don't mind the wait. My 20 gal is commercial, 240V.
I got a 60 gal 2 stage 175 psi for tires and blow gun. Basically its a CH, different color rebrand.
Are you sure you want to stick to the statement of less pressure in the smaller fittings/hose?
Hay fin test out the scroll compressor from Eastwood and give a review ????
Perfect.
Free air delivery FAD is the most important. If the cfm is around 14 take 1/3 off. Will make FAD about 10cfm this is what the compressor will run comfortably at.
Dude u r god send...

I found a campbell hausfeld 2gallon 100max psi in a marketplace and wondering if its good enough to spray paint a car?
Anyone know the best 60 gallon compressor for under $500? For a home garage?
Husky 30 gal 1.7 HP 6.4 scfm at 40 PSI 78dBA vs California 10 gal 2 HP 6.4 cfm at 40 psi 70dBA, which is better? More powerful? I would like to sandblast metal fences (protectors) and paint metal.
Are the harbor freight compressors powered by a 32/1 premix 2 stroke? Because that would seem about right....
Nice video, Mike...I'm also shopping around for a 50Ft., 1/2" heavy duty rubber hose, on a reliable retractable reel, to handle any & all automotive air tools in the garage...what are your favorite 2 hoses on reels? Thanks! :)

I have a 15 year old USA made Campbell Hausfeld 7 hp 60 gallon twin cylinder air compressor still working fine. I could never figure out if you read the oil level with the dip stick all the way in or just touching. I've always used Mobile1 oil. It keeps up with the cabinet sandblaster and painting.
@wirenutt57
6 жыл бұрын
Any time you use a dipstick, you should run that dipstick in as far as it will go to check levels. If it's a screw-in type, screw it in and then unscrew it to check the level. If it's a push-in, push it all the way in. So you read the oil level with the dipstick all the way in.

Especially considering at the shop I get to use 150 CFM super compressors. Anywho, this video confirms for me the middle ground I need is a 60 gallon, with around 3-4 hp, wich should do around 10-14 CFM. Thanks for the confirmation.

Pressure has little to do with properly driving tools it is the cfm that makes the difference. Yes, they are close cousins but if you don't have the volume the pressure isn't going to do squat. Also, the compressor in your corner is a tinker toy, 2 hoses would deplete this thing in seconds.
@devinwilliams3489
5 жыл бұрын
cfm delivers the psi, if you don't have the cfm, pressure drops. an air tank can provide more cfm than the pump is actually rated for, but you need the pump to be able to build the psi up. for intermittent use you can have less cfm on the pump than the tool needs
@josephgaviota

I had a CH compressor and it was the worst buy I ever made at Lowes. It stopped pumping up at about 3 months of use and I would have to dump all the air to get the sensor to tell the compressor to come on and pump it up. I changed the switch assembly and it was fine for about a year and then the same thing started again. I was not using this thing all the time and when I did use it, it would run fine one time and then the next stop filling up such that I would have to stop working and let all the air out to get it running again. I sold it at a yard sale and picked up a 30-gallon, oil compressor, from Home Depot and it has been running flawlessly for over 3 years. I can run 6 air guns on it with no problems and it is a lot quieter than the CH oil-free compressor I had before. Interestingly, before I purchased the CH, I used a Porter Cable pancake compressor for 5 or 6 years and it is still in my garage working to this day.

CH and Lowe's couldn't be a worst combination. Lowes don't carry parts or provide tech support even under warranty. I have a 60 gal 2 stage Kobalt (CH re branded), blew up with all the compressor oil shot across the garage. Good still warranted, bad Lowe's won't provide parts or tech support. Fix it myself, OK for now.
question, how is it that big Ingersoll-Rand Garage Mate 20 gallon tank and 2 HP packs only 5.5 CFM and little Makita MAC5200 5.5 gallon tank Big Bore 3.0 HP gives 6.5 CFM?
@vitaminb4869

Because Makita is lying and overinflating its numbers. You can only get 2hp max from a 110v circuit.

You could cross out Kobalt from Lowe's. They don't have parts or even provide tech support during warranty. Now you know.
clothes washers are 110 v not 220. i think you meant dryers ? For longevity especially if you use your compressor daily , consider a galvanized or stainless steel tank . this will al but eliminate any chance of your compressor blowing up due to faulty check valves .
To run a air sander without having to wait for the compressor you would need a 1000 cfm compressor, as in 99% of the cases the cfm is referred to the air intake not outlet, and the inlet is at atmospheric pressure, the outlet is 7-10 bar

Hello,Thanks for reaching out. Both the compressor and air lines should be considered for use with an impact wrench to remove lug nuts.
