6:53 “I just hot rodded the compressor” 😂 It’s so true though! I modified my compressor’s intake and that easily took 10 seconds off its fill time! Granted it’s louder now but I don’t care it’s in an enclosure outside behind my garage. Great compressor info!

Good info, thanks for sharing, I'm sure SCFM was/is also embellished. I have noticed that Harbor Freight also lowered their SCFM specs in recent years on the same model(s). Reminds me how Briggs and other small engine manufacturers also got sued around the same time for overstating horsepower, they shifted to "torque rating" instead of horsepower 👍🏽

Add extra cooling to the motor and you will be OK running it hard. My comp is in a sound insulator box and it has continous push pull cooling by cooling fans off a car' s radiator. Not only the motor gets extra and contInous cooling (even if it is not running) but the cylinder of the comp is kept cool. Lower air temp less condensation.. Win-win. ,👍 thanks for the great/thorough video! 👍

Whole lotta good information & common sense. Well done. Cheers!, Only other thing I'd add is fittings & air hose ID for increased CFM. Opening the intake part (air filter cover removal, or modification) of the equation is great, but with other bottlenecks, (small inside diameter fittings) you're not getting full potential.

Change pulleys. They sell different sizes at home Depot and Lowes. It's the same as a 10 speed bike. You change pulleys for higher RPM more CFM.

Also another tip, the inner diameter of your hoses and air fittings. You could have the top of the line compressor, but if you have a small diameter hose, it will run like crap. You have to find the bottle necks in your system. Good large inner diameter hose. Also the length of your hose. The longer, the less CFM and PSI. Fittings are critical too.. if the fitting is a small inner diameter it will slow CFM and reduce PSI.

No 1 rule is buying the biggest air displacement capacity you can afford. You need a big pump with big pistons that refills your tank faster than you are emptying it, tank capacity is not as important as the engine. You want a 15-20 seconds refill time from 6-8 bar, or 20-30 seconds from 10 -12 bar.

Ok so i got a harbor freight 11 gal air tank, a HF 8 gal 4 something cfm 125 hot dog and a 6 gal ridgid pancake i got for 40$ at a pawn shop. I just have both feeding the tank and i draw from that. Since they arent on the same line and i used check valves on the feeder lines they dont step on each other. So i now have a 25 gal 7.5 cfm effective unit that cost me less than 250$.

I’ve never seen anyone do that air filter trick. I was about to do that I even had the same thought about the cold air intake but I figured out a better way. I was going to get a 3/8 to 1 inch npt fitting and put on a small cold air intake filter. I was also going to get rid of all the couplers besides 1 that is high air flow and use female to female fittings which will make it a pain since I won’t have quick disconnects but I’ll get as much air out as possible. Was also going to bypass the original regulator as they’re usually restrictive and use the one that’s provided with the 3 stage air filter. I’m also using 3/8 air hose lines with 1/4 high flow fittings.

  • @Grant7

You have to check the cfm requirements on the black widow against the cfm on your compressor...but you should be able to paint the car in sections ( panel by panel) either way

@@Grant7 I checked it, and it's the compressor is about 3.5 cfm lower. Judging from your expertise, do you think it'll be sufficient if I add an auxiliary (totaling to 40 gallon) and remove the filter cap? Thank you!

Thanks for sharing fam I sprayed a bumper yesterday I wish I would have took a lil more time prepping but it came out nice! First thing I did before starting is check out that filter cover mines is a fan that looks like it pulls in fresh air. The motor is small n it gets hot fast lol. I also need to install a valve at the bottom to drain crack open to drain any water! Thanks for sharing all of your great tips! Can't wait to lay down that Grant 7 🔥💪🏾💯💯

Yeah my man.. prep is important....thats 90% of a good paint job...just dont rush it...also make sure your compressor is somewhere where it can get cool or cold air, it will perform better...

Where is the best place to put a filter when painting I've see some put it right on the compressor mostly pros have an air system they just have the gun a regulator an the air line and another thing where should the air be set on the gauge mounted on the compressor besides the one im gonna be using on the gun

  • @Grant7

    @Grant7

If you have a large compressor (60 gallons +) then I would suggest putting the filter 25 ft from the compressor, if you have a small one like the one I'm using, I put the filter 10 ft down the line.

It is a shame that air compressor companies over-rate their motors. But sadly its not only air compressors, a lot of power tools are over rated as well, just to get them to sell. The motor that is on your compressor, it's original, is only a 1HP motor. A true 1HP motor pulls 15A with a rotation of 3450 RPM's.

Those filter canisters are designed to be an intake muffler to make the compressor quieter. Removing the filter canisters will increase the air flow but also increase the noise. Not a big deal but may be a problem for some people who need a quiet compressor.

Damn, I paint with a 5 gal compressor lol! Its a porter cable 5 gal. I will not paint with it now because the regulator is a shitpile. It pops the hell off as you turn the pressure down and it cannot maintain a pressure. I will probably add an aux tank with a regulator on it, so it will actually be the main tank.
