When my cat was a kitten, I made a point to say “ow” when she would play bite even the tiniest bit hard, but my husband would play a bit more aggressively (because kitten teeth don’t hurt). But now that she’s big, she’s gentle with me 90% of the time, but much tougher with my husband! It’s definitely worth it to teach them young.

Also if they are getting “bitey”, I play with them with something else between them and my hand, like a squishy/soft toy that they can bite and kick as much as they want.

Adopted my cat from a shelter when he was 10 weeks old! He was kept separate from other cats because he didn’t have all his vaccinations yet, so he might not have had the opportunity to learn to curb his play aggression from his littermates/other cats… He is the sweetest lap cat during nap time but can be somewhat aggressive with biting and scratching during play time, so I’m hoping these tips will work. Thank you for sharing!

This is the best video on dealing with play aggression I've watched and the only one that talks about negative punishment (removing a pleasant stimulant or something they want) and signaling they have hurt you (with a soft cry or whimper). Another Vlogger actually suggested people hiss at their cat. Don't do that. But just wanted to point out some other vloggers give poor advice and kudos to this video that really draws from the science-based findings of BF Skinner.

We got Zoey when she was 4 mos from a shelter. She was in an area with a few other kittens but I don't think they were her litter mates. She only gets bitey when she's wanting attention. She'll come up to us and roll around on our feet and then grab our legs and bite. She's never been like this when we play with her. Her personality has steadily evolved and she is a loving, playful and adventuresome kitty. I've followed your videos to clicker train her and it's awesomely easy and creates a great bond. Thanks for your videos we have an adventure cat. We travel alot so we have to take her with us. She is trained with the harness too, also thanks to your videos. Oh and now she's playing fetch, which she has taught us we didn't train her to do that! She's now 6 mos old.

My cat was only 4 weeks when we rescued her 😕 her mom was very sick and could not feed or take care of her anymore so me and my partner took care of her, bottle feed her and thought her how to eat solid foods 🥰 She is one and a half now and I definitely think she had a difficult time learning some things because her family never taught her 😕 but she almost never bites hard anymore! When she is super hyper and starts biting we just put her on the flor (because she is usually on our laps when this happens) and let her relax until she comes back calmer 😊 and when she does not want to be petted we just have to accept that no means no!

Very loving, learns fast and listens well. his left eye has the virus. He may have got it at birth. Very happy kitty and it doesn't slow him down one bit... has never hissed at us and the bites are light/loving with no clawing.

So true, I had two orange tabby brothers and when they were young and ‘wrestling’ if one bit the other too hard the bit one would squawk so I would call the biters name and they would stop and look at me, then I would say ‘Kisses!’ One of the brothers would give one last hard bite then leave his brother alone… the other would start giving his brother kisses… that was their personality in a nutshell!

@@OutdoorBengal After several months of working with my cat to not bite, negative consequences did not work for us. I thought about how her bio-mom might react to a painful bite, so I yowl loudly (like a cat) when she bites. She stops immediately, looks at me like I've lost my mind, gives me a little lick and walks away. It took months for her to stop biting me but now she rarely does and it's usually when I pick her up and she doesn't want to be held.

We just adopted a kitten and she's about 3 months old. The foster mom told us that she scratches and bites a lot--so true! I have had cats forever, but never a kitten like this. All she does is attack us. We bought tons of toys for her, including tunnels, moving animal toys, interactive toys, two huge cat trees up to the ceiling, and play with her constantly. We actually got her as a companion cat for our cat that is 3 years old. Nothing has worked with the kitten. She will not stop scratching or biting. Thank you for the advice! New subbie :)

My Bengal kitten was just over 11 weeks old when she came home with me, which I know was a little early, but could not be avoided. She had not learnt to control her claws or bite force for play! So my hands and arms were covered in scratches! I started with what my grandmother taught me when I was a child. If she hurts, then yelp (say ouch or similar in a high pitched voice) and stop playing and this worked well. within a few days, she was much more gentle and now if she accidentally get a bit carried away on occasion bites too hard or something, I do the same and she stops immediately and licks it better. The thing I'm still struggling with is that she still loves to catch my feet and curl herself around them so bite and bunny kick! She is being more gentle with that, but not enough.

My recent cats have all been pedigrees (including a half-Bengal 😀), and they've been adopted either as adults or as 13-week-old kittens, i.e. after their initial course of vaccinations (as required in the UK by the GFFC). I will definitely be enforcing the "no hands or feet" rule more strictly with the next two, though, as it's no fun being woken by having your toes attacked where they poke out of the duvet!

Only very few occasion he want to be let down from us holding him he would put his teeth against my arm us scared of get bitten we would obviously let go of him. But recent two three days he suddenly so interested in wrestling with my feet and and always bite my feet it can hurt too. And night time he use to only pounce a bit but now he pounce on me plus bite. Got me flinched once when he pounced to my face and I felt his teeth on my neck. Though I wasn’t hurt it still scared me remind me of how lion hunt so I’m scared to sleep with him…

We just got our bengal kitty 3 days ago. She is 15 weeks old. Her mum wasn't a natural mum and had to be removed from her kittens for their own safety sadly. I don't know what age they were when that happened though. However, they grew up in a household with other adult female bengals, along with their siblings too. She's still settling in with us, but play aggression is something that became very apparent today, not biting, but scratching, and using me as a human tree, which resulted in me needing to disinfect wounds! I can see now that this happened because she was totally overstimulated, from us playing with her for a good long time. I think going forwards, I need to learn her cues as to when to stop the playtime, and let her calm down with food and sleep.

  • @OutdoorBengal

A good thing you can try to stop playtime is feed her right after. In nature, after hunt, there´s kill and eat. Then sleep. You´ll see that if you play before meal time, you´ll get them to stop. I have a tutorial on how to get your cat to sleep at night where I have a little more detail on this topic. It might help.

@@OutdoorBengal Thank you for getting back to me! The breeder said to offer her food 24hrs, because that's what she's used to, and as she's still so young, I went with it. So in the morning, she's starving when we get up, there's no way we can play with her first. She's desperate for food (I don't leave raw food out overnight for fear of it going rancid in the 9 hours we leave her) but do leave some little biscuits (not her favourite food) that are barely ever touched. Did you feed meantimes only from when you got Mia?

I adopted a 4 months old kitten who was left behind my door by some "kind" person. He already didn't like being held. Now he tolerates this for 1 minute and then bites me a little to be released. I think I unintentionally teached him to bite me to stop me from petting him when he doesn't want to be petted. But that's okay, I reckon he has a right to set his boundaries) He sometimes bites wery hard when we play, so I'll try to fix this as you tought us in this video) Thanks a lot!

Amazing! That's a topic for another video but you can anticipate biting by looking at other body language that is more subtle. When the tail starts to twitch think about stopping the petting. When your cat starts wagging the tail, abort mission, attack is coming! :) Good Luck!

I just got a kitten 3 months old and he’s so gentle and sweet towards me but as soon as the feather toy comes out he becomes vicious. I’m not sure whether to just remove the toy or not to stop the behavior. In that state I tried to pick him up once to calm him and he was growling at me. I wasn’t sure what to do but after seeing this video I’ll just wait until his hunter vibes settle. When I remove the feather toy he becomes agitated and aggressive. After I let him attack the feather he gets to a calmer state faster. It’s very scary to see such a cute kitty become ruthless mini lion. But I’ll follow your advice and let him interact with the toy until he’s calm.

I recognise my foster kitten in the poor socialization box. We couldn't save mama and the rest of her litter so she was all alone and only one month old when they gave her to me. And of course she doesn't know how to play because she was separated from her litter too early so she bites and scratches. I've been looking for another kitten to foster so she can have a companion but for now I have to try and teach her myself. It's not easy, and I worry about having trouble finding her forever home.

I was wondering what technique do you use when you arrive to your home and your cat is waiting to get out when you open the door so I don’t know if there’s a Go back command or how to practise it so she doesn’t escape accidentally when entering the house by asking her to move back. Thanks

What about play aggression between cats? I’m having a problem with my cat either biting my flatmate’s cat during play or randomly biting him when he’s trying to initiate play. My poor flatmate’s cat has developed a nervous peeing problem because of it. I adopted him at 6 years old and he has lived both on the street and in a previous home which abandoned him 😢. I don’t know how to teach him that biting is not ok. I always make a big fuss when he does and say NO really loudly and sternly and stare at him. Sometimes I have to physically pull him off the other cat though. I have never sprayed him but I’m kind of at my wits end on how to stop this. I never thought I would resort to spraying but how do I do this negative punishment thing in this case?

Correcting behaviors needs 2 stages: 1) Stopping the unwanted behavior 2) Reinforcing a wanted behavior (alternative). I would try to find something you want your cat to "attack" and reward them when it happens. This way, when ever presented the opportunity, you are encourage them to use the one that gets them a reward. Good luck!

About 2,5 weeks ago i started clicker training my kitten. I live in a small apartment, en she is full of energy, so i want to take her outside. So clicker training seemed like a good idea to start with. It took me like a week and a half to charge the clicker. Now i want to learn her finger targeting, but when we are having a training session most of the time she just seems bored en walks away. When i sit with 10 minutes she does the trick 3/4 times en then walks away or just stays put and do nothing. I dont free feed her, and her wetfood i give her 3 times a day on the same time every day. For the treats i use her dry food. Do you know what i can do to excite her for training?
