I recently moved from NYC to FL. Had a big cat carrier in the back of the car -- a bathroom area and a food/resting area. The movers took the rest. I never knew you could travel in a car without a carrier. You have great advice. My rescue cat, Finn, was abused, and is finally getting trusting enough to learn mutually beneficial behaviors. Thanks to your advice, he even knows "stay" now, instead of biting and scratching me at meal time. You teach so much about understanding cats.

Hello! Carriers are advised if tha cat can pose a threat to the drivers attention but otherwise, it's really not needed. Happy to hear you got "stay" in your repertoir! :)

My cat travels with me everywhere. I try to take her with me in the car every few weeks even if it’s just a trip to get dinner in the drive through. Or get gas and drive through the car wash. I have lots of fluffy baby blankets that are hers and have her scent all over them. Also her scratching post comes with me because that is her center of play. She normally only uses her box two to three times a day. Usually after she has eaten. So on road trips it’s no big deal because I always feed her at 6 am anyway so she’s usually used the box long before I need to leave. Then feed her at 6pm which I should have arrived at my destination by then, even if it’s a multi day drive, I’ll be at a pet friendly hotel. I let her out to check out the space, feed her and she always finds her box. She digs to the bottom of her box so aluminum tins wouldn’t work for her but I carry cardboard boxes that cans or bottles of water come in. She likes cardboard. I carry a pour tub of litter with me. Put a pee pad under the box and keep a small whisk broom and dust pan to sweep up the stray litter. I bag up her pee balls and poop right away in little doggie doody bags. Then put them in a large trash bag. When I leave, I bag up the cardboard box as well. I keep her scoop in a ziplock with the handle poking out and mostly zipped so the handle doesn’t get cruddy. She has learned, by my camping two or three miles from home, to enjoy camping. At first I drove to the campsite and set up everything then went back and got her. Then dropped her home before I tore everything down. Now she patiently stays in her backpack while I set up the tent and she zooms right in as soon as it’s up. And dutifully gets in her backpack as I’m tearing everything down. I keep her carrier and backpack open at home and give her treats in there almost daily. Not all cats will travel well but she has learned. I got her at age 4 but she has learned to enjoy her harness walks and riding in her backpack and road-tripping in the car. And she is fed raw. Good for her very sensitive tummy and her litter box smell is almost nonexistent.

Absolutely! He doesn't like the cat, the relationship ends there. The cats came first, and I promised myself I would never willingly let them go, I'd do everything in my power to keep them safe and well fed. After loosing my precious cat Tiger because my grandfather wouldn't let us have her when we were practically homeless, I resented that, it was traumatic to loose such a close friend who was there for such tough times 😢😢😢

I brought my kitty home at 8 weeks, a 6 hour drive. It was great he just slept there with his toys, and watched me drive. We almost got into an accident I had to brake really really hard, and he ended up flying forward and being flipped on his carrier. Good thing he's a naturally confident dude cause it didn't e affect him at all. It's 3 weeks later now and I wanna go on more trips with him.

Last April my mother and I drove out to Lake Country from Vancouver and took my cat with us; she rode in her kitty carrier, and I let her out to walk around the car every time we stopped, which was every hour or so. I have a travel litter box which I kept in the car with her regular litter in it, and she used that during one our breaks. She got a little antsy after the two hour mark in both directions, but additional attention was enough to keep her calm. At the hotel it took just a few minutes for her to settle in. She uses her kitty backpack as a den at home quite often anyway, so that was already familiar and I also brought her fleece blankie plus one of the fleece blankets that she likes to sleep on at home. Just like at home, she slept with me every night.

Hahaha love the final advice! I would have loved to see how it works traveling with a cat. As a cat owner myself I take my six months mix Bengal everywhere. Just as I would if it would be a baby. It's family. Yes, it can be a bit more complicated, but the same as with kids, it is all in your head and your attitude. We are planning in living in our self built rolling house in the next year's and travel a bit. So thanks, until now my cat enjoys traveling as long as I pet her. She is so curious she doesn't really enjoy being left inside her bag so long. Your videos have helped a lot in guiding her behavior. I will try positive reinforcement to teach her who is the boss when it comes to play time and being inside her bag time

@@OutdoorBengal jajaja pienso lo mismo. Las mascotas son no sólo familia, sino los bebés de la casa. A mí no me gustaban los gatos. JAJAJA.

i have always have always left their carriers open with toys. it was their safe place. With Willow’s carrier it was always open on my bed because it was a safe place. it was left open my bed. My Birmans flew with me in the cabin in special carriers designed for that. They never wete in the cargo area. in fact i loved how when we were getting ready to disembark i I would pull out the carroer at my feet and open ot up to ask my check on my kitty and folks who may have complained were stunned. they never knew my kitty was there. Of course the flight crew knew and were angels bringing me ice cubes for my kitty. Ironically one flight i was seated next to a 49’er football player. he figured out my special carrier had a kitty. (i discreetly check on them.). he was delighted when we landed and i brought out my kitten and he could cuddle him! The orher passengers were stunned! Tip: i chose seats in the back against the window. now one likes those seats so i often had all 3 seats AND i was next to the stewardesses station and they knew i was legally having a kitting in cabin with me. and would bring a small plastic bowl with icecubes for them. !

Hi Doppelschuh Brown. Jackson Galaxy, the cat behaviorist has some excellent products for cats. One in particular called Scaredy Cat is great. One of my client has a very sweet Tabby that is very jumpy when she hears loud noises and it takes her a bit to calm down. But after a few drops on her food she becomes her usual mellow self. 2 fluid ounces go for $27.95 on his website but a little goes a long way and without any weird side effects. 🌟👍🌟

Can't wait to see n learn new tricks. I need ur help tho. My kitty does well in a car ride so long as she's out of the carrier. She hates being in tiny lil areas go figure!!! She likes sitting in smash boxes 🤔🤔😽🙀 anyways, I have a hard time getting her out of the house but she tries to dash out the door every so often (go figure) once she's in the car she rides sitting quietly on my lap or on a pillow behind my neck, but that's not safe ... can u please tell me how do I get her in a car seat carrier so she can be safe. I bought her a car carrier that's open on top n it straps with a seat belt but she refuses to get in it. She gets in it when she goes to the groomers or the vet but as soon as she's in the car n the door closes she's a horror if not let free. What do u recommend??? How can I rectify her attitude so she can be safe??? Getting her out of her harness is also a challenge getting the harness on is easy maybe cuz she knows that means exploring the park. My kitty is a contradiction please help me keep her safe n make the harness walking fun. I don't take her out as often as I would like cuz I don't want to stress either one of us with her bad cattitude. Not sure if her being a tortoiseshell has anything to do with it. Does it??? I'm a new cat mom all I know about cats is from Google, ur vids, n Jackson galaxy. Thank you in advance. My cat n I thank you for teaching me what little I know about cats. We appreciate u. You will see that once your cat normalizes the carrier, she is going to be better at staying inside it.

We trained our cat, who is a 6-months old male American Bobtail, to love his carrier, to walk on a leash, however car rides and outdoors (on a leash) are tricky. The cat shakes in fear. So we question if we should proceed further with the training, and if it's possible to overcome this fearfulness, or such cat personalities are not trainable for car rides and outdoor activities.

My bengal has no problems with carrier, harness, leash, using the human toilet. He´s been so easy to train in everything, APART from the car ride. We´ve tried feliway, gapapentin, cbd. NOTHING helps, he screams like he´s being murdered non-stop, as long as the engine is on. The moment the engine goes off, he´s alright again. We´ve trained and trained and trained him, but to no avail. He HATES the car rides. Dunno what to do.

hie,i am a super fan of you and your cat.. i just had a question, why does my cat try to go out alone, like he is a male and is neutered and is with me since he was merely 6 days old, still whenever the gate is open,he tries to escape and then i have to go and grab him, he loves me when he is at home but just escaping whenever the door is open makes me feel bad...

Where I live you can take your cat to a boarding place and get them used to that so when you leave, they are in a familiar place for awhile. It's less stressful when you collect them later.

I've tried to take my cats in the car weekly since they were kittens but one of them always throws up on the ride now. She is the more anxious of the two and still doesn't like the car but I can't give her food or treats before or during the trip as I'm scared she will throw up.

  • @OutdoorBengal

My recommendation is that you try to do your best to keep them relaxed. Try placing the carrier on your lap and going for very short rides first. Getting your cat to enter the carrier on their own and to link it with something positive will also help you achieve it. Good luck

Two tips, use higher value treats and help acclimate them before you go on a trip. How to help them be comfortable, get them on the car and let them roam before moving, until they leave the carrier on their own and get comfortable.
