Agate hunt at Birdlings Flat in New Zealand - I cut them and one is quite a surprise!
I headed off to Birdlings Flat just south of Christchurch to go and find some agates. I was there for about 3 hours and we found about a hundred agates between the 3 of us.
I also used my rock saw to cut a number of them to see what is inside. One was really suprising

Used to come here with adear friend Kayla Russell, when we were younger. Her parents had a bach there. (Her stepdad would tumble stones too)Loved sitting there looking at all the pretty stones
@17:09, could that be stromatolite? Or maybe just a mundane mossy agate? It's really cool, whatever it is! I love that you posted an agate hunt today, my Mom sewed camo-patterned shoulder bags for all the grandchildren. They spent a couple of hours running around madly collecting pretty rocks, then filing by my chair to show them off and try to identify each one. Had a great time! Hope this finds you well--safe travels and happy hunting!

I need to spend more time doing them!
Nice bonus content. I love rock hounding. I found my first blue chalcedony in September of this year. stoked to find more in the new year. I think you might be right about the wood. When you tilted it back you could see the rings. Great finds that day .Thanks for sharing.

Yay! Glad you like them 😃
Father of two here who is looking at getting my young kids interested in rock hunting and rock cutting. Great for learning and bonding. You wouldn't happen to have a start point for me to look into, regarding rock cutting equipment? I see in a comment below you have a Redwood saw, any other thoughts or places for me to look at seeing i'm starting out and on a budget? Cheers!!
😁 Great video mate 👍🏻👍🏻

Not a bad idea!
Thanks for another great video mate. I was recently down south a bit from birdlings and found some nice little agate's. But also picked up a couple of stones just like the larger ones you picked up. Unsure what it is as I currently have nothing to cut them, but does look like some type of quartz.. ? Maybe I really dont know.
Its fun doing this a birdlings flat just never ever go swimming there..I think you would get the feeling its super dangerous.

Yeah, the current is crazy
Great video…as usual. I could not help thinking that the bucket must be a lot lighter than your normal haul 👏👏👏

I would've loved seeing the quality agate with the quartz through the center polished. Nice finds. You have such a good eye finding goodies among the rocks. 👍❤️

Do you ever check the clear banded agates for Iris?

What kind of slab saw do you use? It looks different from most slab saws, I like it because you can see it cutting and you can slab smaller rocks🙏🤎

It's a Redwood Engineering rock saw made in New Zealand.

@@mamlamborocks I wonder if they make anything like that in the states, it would make sense. Thanks again.
Loving your videos, and CC's too, you wanna do more hunting with the sun shining LoL :-)

Yeah, it was quite overcast!
I was just there a few days ago without knowing anything about the agates when driving back from Akaroa. I was blown away by the rounded rocks and beauty of the place. Wish I knew about the agates then.
I was trying to figure out how I missed this video...then I realized it was a separate channel from the fossils. Haha Subbed to this channel too now :) Rock on!

@@mamlamborocks that's a shame!
I can't tell for sure but the last cut rock kind of reminds me of a really mossy or plumy agate.

Thanks OR!
Went to birdlings flat today with the whanau and I accidentally filled a bucket with things hahha they were weighing down my pocket first time tumbling stones so I hope I found some goodies
What a great eye you have for these rocks and fossils. The one with texture on it looks almost like a regular rock to me, did the color then make the difference for you?
@mamlamborocks

Yeah, it's usually the colour or texture. But I'm by no means an expert, I still bring rocks back that aren't agates :)
0:34 picks up agate, leaves jade on beach.
Have you checked your beaches with UV light? Wonder if there is anything fun that might have been missed. :)
