After Legend Heard Fellow Icon COVER His Song-He FREAKED OUT & Started COPYING IT!-Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Coming up the story of an all-time rock classic that has 2 Legendary versions. All Along the Watchtower by Bob Dylan was actually covered by Guitar Virtuoso Jim Hendrix and realized before Dylan could get his out. Bob Dylan got into a motorcycle accident and shortly after changed the way he wrote and the result is All Along the Watchtower with lyrical inspiration from the book of Isaiah from the Bible making the song lyrics over 2700 years old. Thing is after Bob Dylan heard Hendrix's version of the song he freaked out. He loved it. In fact, after he heard it he started playing it the exact same way. It’s become arguably the greatest cover song ever and has been covered since then by everyone from Dave Matthews Band to U2. Bob Dylan released All Along the Watchtower on his 60s classic John Wesley Harding. Get the story next on Professor of Rock.

The song “All Along the Watchtower” was written by Bob Dylan, one of the most influential lyricists in recorded music history, and transformed into pre-eminence by Jimi Hendrix, one of the greatest instrumentalists of the Rock Era. Only a month after the release of his highly acclaimed Blonde on Blonde LP in ‘66, Dylan had a mysterious motorcycle accident- wrecking his Triumph on a windy (wine-dee) road in upstate New York.
There are no police records of the accident, no evidence of an ambulance being summoned, no witnesses, or even an official hospitalization of Dylan. The best intel that we have comes from Dylan’s late manager, Albert Grossman, who arrived on the scene moments after the incident. Grossman recounted that the crash happened not long after Dylan had left their residence. Grossman & his wife, Sally, were in a vehicle- following Dylan along the same road, when they suddenly rounded a corner and saw the wreckage on the the side of the road, with his mega-famous client lying on the ground.
Although Dylan was writhing and moaning, he did not look to be injured. Instead of asking his manager to drive him to the hospital, Dylan opted to be taken to a home doctor named Ed Thaler.
Many have questioned the entire story. If he was hurt, why wouldn’t he insist on going to a professional doctor a a hospital, instead of a general practitioner located an hour away. There was conjecture that Dylan staged the accident because he wanted to get away from the media microscope.
He had become such a big icon, the pressure began to take its toll on him. Some felt Dylan didn’t want the responsibility of being the so-called “voice of a generation,” and just wanted to lead a normal life. Dylan’s former band member Robbie Robertson swears that Bob was in a neck brace for several weeks and that he, indeed, had suffered a vertebra injury.

Hendrix's version is the original mic drop. I miss him. He was an original. Young people don't realize how influential he was. You can tell listening to rock songs before and after he hit town. The twirpy guitars suddenly turned into what we expect nowadays. It was ALL due to Hendrix. Rock on Jimi.

I have to tell you, I grew up, loving music. Three of my brothers can play guitar. I just didn’t seem to have the aptitude. But it didn’t diminish my love of music. Yes, I read liner notes, back covers, and had copies of cream magazine all over the place. Your videos are giving me new insights to music that I love. And I am all over the place with it, one just has to look at my playlist on KZread or Pandora. Thank you for bringing new insights to the music that I love in particular, the 70s. But I’ve also gotten a new appreciation for the songs of the 80s and 90s into the 2000s. Thanks again.

Let's not forget the seriously ethereal version done by Bear McCreary for the Battlestar Galactica Season 3 finale. That actually got me more interested in both the original Dylan recording, and the cover by Hendrix. In my opinion it's the best cover of the song (since Hendrix). McCreary was able to weave it into the story line AND make it a song that very well could have been written 150,000 years ago on another world. All the other covers since Hendrix are poor imitations to my ear. I love it when someone can come up with a completely different 'interpretation' and make it a high quality listening experience. It's a rare thing when a band or singer can make a cover song as good or better than the original.

Realize when you see Dylan over the years, he's kinda like Van Morrison (but not quite!) wanting not to do the song the same every time. He went through the torture of forerunning the folk guitar songiness transmuted into electric versions of old and new songs and got hated for it, especially in England. But emotional as it made him, he forged ahead and moved the needle deeper and wider, Dylan did. Viva Bob! But what price did he have to pay? Lots of hidden info around the intrigue. Remember, he was supposed to write three autobiographical books. To my knowledge he only put out one. What say you on that Professor? Chronicles part 1 I think was the title. And he definitely held back on what he told. Expecially no mention of smoking pot or drug use, or enlightenment or inspired from thereof. I saw him with the Band from Ronnie Hawkins days, around 1966, he kept singing off key or out of synch and laughing when he did so. That wasn't a sober Bob. I think it was Rick Danko who offered us in the audience at Cornell that night that Bob had had a rough plane trip to get there and it had affected his hearing. Which launched Bob into even more laughter.

Yup: screwing up in my first year of college, facing the draft, just broke up with girlfriend, and then I walked into my school's lounge and heard "Memphis Blues Again," for the first time. Obscure as the meaning may be, it talked to me immediately, and I found myself singing it to myself quite happily for days. It took me out of a low time. And, yes, the other songs were quite good too (several which had already gotten much radio time when they came out). And I still have my original LP.

The principle called me into the office the next day and said, "I know you left at 11:00 yesterday, I could hear your Hendrix as you left". Busted!

Two legendary people, there will never be another Jimi. No one can write like Dylan. It took me a long time to really appreciate Bob's work. I love both versions of this song. Props to Bob for the way he respected Jimi and the tribute in the best way he can. I am a late comer to rock. 87-88 was when I got into it, but I love a lot of things from long before then. 50's-90's rock have no equal.

Everyone has a ten year stretch that influenced them the most, usually junior high school to their early 20's. Mine would be 63' to 73'. Great music in those days. Dylan wrote so many songs that became a hit for other artists. Knockin' On Heaven's Door has been covered successfully numerous times, G N' R's being my favorite. I always interpreted the joker saying to the thief "There must be some kind of way outta here" as a comment on the times. The turmoil spawned by the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement left the joker feeling there was no way to escape the chaos often caused by social change. The thief replies, "Chill we have been through this before. If honest people stick together everything will be okay". But the ending inferred that maybe the thief didn't have much faith in the offered reassurance.
