They have redeemed themselves SOMEWHAT from their last fiasco but that list is still only about 60% correct. If for nothing else the omissions are criminal. I"m not even a big Vai fan and still believe that Val and Satriani have to be in the top 50 by default. I haven't read the article but based on this video I'd be utterly unsurprised to find out that the author doesn't play. Musicality matters and if I was picking the greatest song writers it would be the determining factor but technical ability has to count for something on a greatest guitarist list. I'd prefer to listen to Nirvana but as a guitarist I also know that Vai is a better guitarist than Kurt.

I feel you on Chuck Berry. They had a show on MTV back in the day called “The List” and they did a top ten guitarist episode. I boycotted MTV for 3 years because they didn’t even mention Chuck Berry. I don’t think he is top ten either but I would put him in the top 20 for influence. Also he did write the most iconic rock and roll intro of the 20th century.

Moving knopfler from top 30 to 96 made me so sad. Hearing him on alchemy live one random day in high school changed my life. He made me love rock and roll and I’m sure many people feel the same. There’s no one else who could do it like him. His sound is instantly recognizable

First time I've seen this channel. Good video. No matter who makes a list like this everybody else is going to be disagree with some rankings and snubs. I thought they did a good job of including some names that aren't usually on these lists and a better than usual for them list of looking beyond just Boomer icons. If you are not familiar with Poison Ivy Rorschach and you are a Jack White fan I definitely recommend digging into her band The Cramps. They are a major, major influence on the kind of Garage/Rockabilly music The White Stripes came out of and still one of the very best to do it. They also have a lot of songs inspired by Horror movies so they're perfect for this time of year.

I'm not a huge fan either. BUUUT His resume is unmatchable. The hoops he had to jump through for Satch and most impressively Zappa. NO OTHER guitarist on the list would have survived it. 0 mistakes allowed on the absolute most difficult music to play. I'd have to put Vai #2. Even if I don't listen to his music. As a player, he's the best. My #1 would have to be SRV. I believe he surpassed his idol Hendrixs by every measure.

Agreed. I'm not a country guy at all, but he's a legend.

I grew up remembering music from the 70s and 80s being i finished high school in the early 80s. I have saw more than a few guitarist that when watching them perform you can see that they always give it everything that they had . Please let give the recognition to the ones that definitely deserve it.

Glad to see all is well Tyler and your bCk to full health. One thing though in regard to slide players. I agree that both Trucks and Allman are world class players and have done some really fine work. But and here it is, are you familiar with Johnny Winter at all, if not, if you can find the time you may want to! There's a performance he did on David Letterman of a song he wrote called Rock and Roll. His playing will send shivers up your proverbial spine, he absolutely flies through some death defying chilly sequences, he changes the time, the key all in service to the song, and careens through it never losing control. Seriously he'll make your jaw drop. Cheers Tyler all the best. Btw I love the album, excellent work.

Brian Setzer is one of the best guitarists I have ever seen play. How is he not on this list.

As soon as I saw this article I went to see if Setzer made it, the man can outplay almost anyone alive today

Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Michael Romeo, John Petrucci, Tosin Abasi, Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, Joe Satriani - there are more obviously but these guitar players alone blow every single one of these “Top 250” out of the water. Without question. No contest.

Andrés Segovia did more than anybody for the guitar. He literally reinvented singlehandlely the instrument, took it from just a flamenco bar instrument and allowed it to be taken seriously and played in concerts. Withouth him none on this list would have existed.

@@orlock20 Nirvana used odd tunings, and they wrote some great music, light years beyond anything hacks like Swift have done. And although Nirvana didn't invent grunge, they were the band that broke that sound to mainstream audiences.

Love to know their criteria. Perhaps it was completely random so that it would generate discussion (rage?), but have just enough legit rankings so that people will read it.

One of these days, they’ll have someone who actually plays the guitar compile this list. It’s gonna be revolutionary.

I think it's missing the following guitarists: Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt (probably as a combo), Mdou Moctar, Wilko Johnson, Paco de Lucía, Woody Guthrie, John Squire (Probably in the top 20 if not even higher) Roy Clark and maybe Johnny Marr.

Everyone plays Chuck berry licks. The term Boomer Bend comes to mind. But also that blues shuffle... I wouldn't put him at number 2, but I can see how you could make a case for that. He would be in my top 15

Johnny Marr, Robert Smith, Dave Navarro, Daniel Ash should be on this list, all for their very distinctive innovative stylings.

I love the style of Robert Smith, but technically he's not really one of the best guitar players. Navarro on the other hand can both shred and play beautiful melodic solos, him i would include. Of course i don't know what this list is going for, because you could rate based on technicality, uniqueness or influence... And all should have their own separate lists if you ask me.

Gary Moore? Les Paul? Richie Sambora? Don Felder? Joe Walsh? Jason Becker? Should all be on list. Imo Les Paul is number 2, but I think top 10 is fair and most would agree top 25. Dude innovated, inspired, played AMAZINGLY. Not only was he lightning quick and more perfect every time, he invented multitrack recording, invited the loop pedal, made a recording studio in his house so good that every top musician in the world wanted to use is, invented backing tracks, and ofc invented that guitar that a lot of people like. A lot of top musicians have signature guitars. Nobody has a signature guitar that’s so popular that other musicians use yours to make their signature guitar. People like Eric Johnson, Clapton, Van Halen, BB King to mention a few would be ecstatic and like a fan when he invited them on stage to play with him. Outside of his skills this credits a high spot imo

Agree, Joe Walsh should be in Top 20 or so. Being the sole guitarist in a 3-piece (James Gang -- hey I'm old, and "James Gang Rides Again" when I was in college.) With great bends & fills, and the only other harmonic content from the bass (and that guy is no slouch either.)

How about Michael Hedges (R.I.P.) One of the atmospheric guitarists from Windham Hill's ensembles, and longtime musical partner of Michael Manring. Hint: listen to "Aerial Boundaries."

No Micheal Hedges? You've got to be freaking kidding me! I was fortunate to have seen him play a couple times before his untimely death in 1997. One of the most innovative and unique players - ever! In my opinion, he should easily be in the top 20. Psst!

The lack of Fripp is crazy. The guy is an instrumental tour de force and has been the brains behind King Crimson for over 50 years. He even has an entire guitar style and group of guitarists (League of Crafty Guitarists) based on his style and taught by him.

This video jumps from 61 to 53. Fripp was at 59 ( I wouldn't argue with that certainly in my top 100. Shocked that Gary Moore didn't make the 250 (Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham (of Thin Lizzy) were at 194!

Hmm...seeing all these great guitarists who, in many cases, had guitars as iconic as those playing them - if you were to make a list of the top 20 guitars of all time? What would make your list? Just as an example, BB King's Lucille (Gibson ES-355) comes to mind.

It’s like they took all 250 guitarist and pressed randomize on the computer and said “that’s good enough”.

Can you follow this up with a video for all the incredible players they left out? Still can't believe how Petrucci, Zakk Wylde, Alan Holdsworth, Steve Morse (!!) and so many more didn't make the cut

Neal schon...the list is rife with embarrassments. However a win was randy Rhoads getting the recognition he deserves, talent was he is top 5 but he had a short resume, never has gone had as much influence with such a short career. Not to mention all great session player's who actually recorded the hit songs we all listen to on the album

Great video discussion, I enjoyed it. One thing, if you think DT and DA are the best slide players ever, then please go listen to Sonny Landreth. If the criteria is just playing ability and not their mark on music, it's not even close.

How about Tim Reynolds who often plays with Dave Matthews. Listen to his acoustic guitar solo tune ''Stream'' to hear him blaze through your head at dizzying speeds. It's the title track from his first solo album. Also his 3 (or maybe 4 by now) live duo albums with Matthews are great and easy to listen to musical documents. Watching them together is even better : )
