Africa Answers - Gender and women's rights in Africa and beyond

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the third edition of the Africa Answers series is dedicated to women's rights and feminism. In her wide-ranging contribution, Anika Jane from Kenya discusses the historical context, political and economic dimensions that influence the struggle for women's rights around the world, and why it is important to have men as allies in the fight for gender equality.
Africa Answers is a series by the EUI School of Transnational Governance, featuring fellows of its Young African Leaders Programme. Interviewed by their peer Silindile Mlilo, the fellows discuss crucial issues for the development of Africa.

Beautiful conversation ladies. I have to agree, feminism is defined differently across the African continent. The injustices of the past affected the women differently. However, we can all agree that the western and the African feminism aims to achieve similar goals.

Brilliant minds. I love Anika’s disciplinarian and authoritative deliberations. I informally conversed with her sporadically. This is how she deconstructs the thing more formally in the African context. This will redeem feminism from the negative connotations it suffers in Africa from. Silindile is demanding and provocative!!! Sili… we owe you a lot!!!!!
