Australia: a middle-power between West and East - with Prof Diane Stone

In episode 28 of Governance This Week, we take a break from Eurocentrism. With Diane Stone, Professor in Global Policy at the Florence School of Transnational Governance, we take a look at policy and governance in Australia, a country with a European history, a special relationship with the US, but located closer to countries in Southeast Asia.
Diane Stone discusses Australia’s main governance features, the controversies surrounding Australia Day, as well as the Aukus (Australia, UK, US) partnership, and what it means for the country’s role on the global stage.

James Cook didn't command the First Fleet, Arthur Phillip did. Australia Day will be controversial for some no matter what date it was. Personally, I think it should be celebrated on the 2nd of January, because the 1st is already a holiday.

Those coming to Australia by generally unseaworthy boats are seeking asylum, & are not 'illegal' at all. If they had documentation, they would have purchased an airline ticket for less cost.

Interesting that she is talking about the different waves of immigration and that Asians started comming during and following the Vietnam war. While that's correct, fact is also that Australia had a "white only" policy which de facto only got lifted under the Whitlam government in 1973. Asians were simply not welcomed prior to that.
