    It's rare. Why would a snake bite the tree it's in? Sure the tree is weird and it moves but it's still a tree.

    Thank you so much for such an honest story about your first snake! I looked into getting a snake for over a year (after being interested since I was a teen!) and finally got my ball python Perri a couple weeks ago. My first few times handling him were great! But newbies will make mistakes no matter how prepared, and he's bit me a couple times since then - One time in which he would NOT let go and I had to get my gin - I hadn't thoroughly washed my hands and in retrospect, he was also in hunting mode at the time based on his behaviors prior to me trying to grab him! It's good to hear about beginner experiences from people who are very experienced now, especially being a beginner and having heard people say "if you're scared of handling your snake then you shouldnt have a snake"

    Appreciate the video! I just got my first normal ball python last week. I had done months of research and this video has helped the most. He’s very curious but getting him out of his enclosure is always scary cause he’s super quick to make that “s shape”. He’s never in a balled position to pick him up he’s often stretched out roaming the enclosure. I grew up with the saying “any good snake is a dead snake” and always scared of snakes, so this definitely is getting me out of my comfort zone! Ive had him a week and I’ve had one successful feeding and holding! We’re still getting comfortable with each other, but he’s great!

    Just got my ball boi. I've wanted one for a long time and held a few BUT I always get skiddish when it comes to fast sudden movements and actually picking them up. I got a leopard gecko a year back and I've gotten used to having him walk on my hand willingly but the idea of actually being the initiator for the pick up gets my heart rate up. I've been working on my fears because I adore these animals. I just wish my Ma didn't give me these fears to begin with when she tried to force me to hold frogs on multiple occasions when I wasn't comfortable.

    I picked up my baby spotted Python by my self for the first time today. I’m proud! Normally I’ll have my bf pick him up and give him to me but I’m trying to overcome my fear of being bitten. I know it’s bound to happen one day lol I have a aquarium I made into a space for my snake and I hate reaching from above just as you explained. Soon I’ll save up to get a front open door terrarium. But I try to think.. if I can withstand cat scratches this shouldn’t be an issue but I still have a sense of fear in the back of my head lol thanks for this video, it does help he was so curious and friendly once he was out the aquarium. I can’t wait to get him more comfortable with my hands as he gets older

    Thanks for the info, I’m definitely thinking about getting a couple at some point. I had to give shots to a German Shepherd for diabetes. It needed the jab at 6am and 6pm while she was eating. I would always have to get everything prepped because when you talk out to give her food she would growl. While she was eating I would walk up behind her and give her it with no real problem. Most ppl were too afraid to help take care of her lol. Watching your video helps give me some more confidence though.

    You gave me a very reassuring comment last week & I found this video. Found out my dude hasn't been handled in months except to be moved. The one time I tried to handle him, he was just like the one that struck at your hoodie. He was out to kill the towel I had in my other hand. I'm still trying to give him time to adjust, so I think I'll give him another week to figure out that: 1. Mom is nocturnal 2. His tank is not going to change again 3. The dogs bark & I also hate hearing it and 4. The ir temp gun & water bottle are friends. I really want to get this dude out soon, but he's been through a week of changes, so I owe it to him to leave him alone until after his next feeding. But also I want to check to make sure he hasn't made any messes in his hide & that he looks good. Like I said before, what's keeping me going is his previous owner thanking me for giving him a better life. I just hope he realizes that we aren't that different.... stressed & sleepless lol

    Still a relevant video, picked up my baby Palmetto yesterday, held her the day I picked her up from the breeder to check her over, now leaving her for a week to adjust before I start interacting with her, weighing her and giving her first feed. I don't think I'm scared of picking her up, I'm more scared of scaring her. I always get to my knees and work low when I'm in her Viv, so she can watch me at eye level.

  • @wanbon
    @wanbon27 күн бұрын

    As someone who just got a baby Ball, this has been encouraging. I've been giving her time to get used to her tank since the first couple days she wasn't crazy about me. Now she seems to recognize that I can poke around her tank and I'm not doing it to hurt her. I'm planning on handling her some more after she finishes digesting. For what it's worth for people worried about hide size - ball pythons like to curl up super tight and burrow. It's recommended that they dont even have too big of a tank because it'll stress them out. If you have a kinda big tank, fill it with some clutter - it'll calm them down if they can hide.

    Learning to use s snake hook helps dramatically. Just a light tough on the head of a rowdy bp will reset that posture and most times have them ducking or moving away. At that point you can reach in and pick up once their attention is not on you. I usually use the hook to move the snake closer to me, then prevent a strike by head touching or blocking then grabbing. Works every time.

    This definitely helps. I just received my first snake yesterday. I became a little concerned after going in to check the temperatures in the enclosure and seeing the snake striking at me from the other side of the tub(tub is temporary…just letting it grow before going in it’s bigger enclosure). This tactic will give me more confidence when I eventually start handling after the first week or so. Provided it eats ok 👍🏽 in a few days.

    can you do a video of how to get a young new snake more comfortable with you handling it and how often you should handle it? I have a young pied and he/she doesn't unball when held and I feel like its a comfort issue. I myself am a bit nervous when my snake does this and I wonder if my nervousness contributes to the snake or if I'm doing everything ok and its just going to take the snake more time to relax being held. I usually only hold it for 10 min at most maybe once a day when its been long enough after feeding. (never struck at me but stays tense all the time)

    I had never held a snake before I got mine. I kept it him in the bag and left him sit in the bag in my hand until my heart rate dropped, and I felt comfortable enough to take him out. Whole process probably took 5 to 10 minutes maybe. The only time he hisses at me is if I mess with him during the day, he clearly doesn't like being woken up. He's only struck at me when I didn't pet him before I picked him up, that was my fault lol.

    I have two ball pythons. One is around 6 months old if I was to go by the growth and feeding charts weighing in at 300 grams and also my first ever snake (Zelda) who is incredibly chill and the other is a female easily 5’8 - 5’10” range. This rescue girl let me handle her the first time I attempted to handle her after the rescue after I gave her 10 days to settle in. But that’s the problem she only let me handle her the first time. Every time after that she would let me take her out of her cage but she would lash out and try to bite me in the face but she’d only successfully get my arm. She does let me do maintenance of her enclosure (spot cleans, water bowl cleans and changes, even moving things around in her enclosure to give her a new reason to be curious. This snake has me pretty freaking terrified of it due to its sheer size and it’s crankiness. Let’s me take her out but will go crazy once she’s out.

Or he prefers to speed handle as my nephew calls it. He's moving full speed while holding him. He's from what I was told a candio clown. He's a light cream color with some yellow white little bit of orange around a couple of his patterns. He's maybe a year old. About 2 ftt juvenile. He don't hiss or strike either.

    Do you also have holes in the back of your tubes? If so how many and how does it holds humidity? Does your snakes shed correctly? I'm only asking because I just got my VE-6 rack and I been letting it run for the last three days and there is a lot of Condensation building up on the sides. I'm also using repti chip as my substrate.

  • @SNKELTD

    @SNKELTD

    3 жыл бұрын

    No holes in the back. Your substrate is either too wet or you have too few holes if their's condensation. Maybe a combo of both. I try to have the Reptichip made days or weeks ahead of time to make sure it's pretty dried out. You can always add water to it in the tub if it's too dry

    @@SNKELTD You are absolutely right. Just squeeze a piece of the reptichip and water came out. I have the reptichip sitting in tubes now with a fan blowing over it. Hope this helps to dry it out some. From now on out I will let it dry out for about a week before using it. You should do a in depth video on the VE-tubes. I know you have a few already but all the videos I've watch doesn't state how many holes and where you should put the holes in the tubes. This will help beginners like me to try and get an understanding on how to control the humidity, but all and all I enjoy your videos and there are extremely informational. I watched a few with my youngest son and he was blown away how you have your kid in them. Now he wants to make KZread videos with me😂😎🙏

I don't want to piss my snake off and make it impossible to pick him up. if he's trying to take my fingers off as a little snack should I just keep going and pick him up or just leave him to do him? just looking to give this guy the best life I can haha. and when I say tips I don't mean just for picking him up I mean like anything snake that would be good to know as a first time snake dad lol. oh and he's a banana arroyos ball python but I'm pretty sure he's actually a coral glow and he's a little guy haha

    I believe those are colubrids. And colubrids are a whole different thing with handling than pythons and boas. By nature they are a bit more flighty. I can't even touch one of my rat snakes or milk snake. But my other rat snake and king snake are the friendliest snakes I have

    I’m having a really hard time with my startle reflex , I’ve tossed my bp across the room twice now . The first time was a feeding response and she latched on and I reacted and flung my hand back with her attached and she went flying , just now I was holding her and she strikes at my other hand and I flung her again! Idk what to do , I’m not even thinking when I do it I just happens it’s like I have no control over it , and it’s making me think I should rehome her for her safety

    If you can't overcome the knee jerk reaction, you can't keep it. It's not fair to the snake, and you will eventually hurt the animal if you haven't already

    @@SNKELTD that’s what I’m thinking too, I might have to rehome her , she does great handling , I think the two times she stuck was my fault , the first time I dropped a mouse In her enclosure and went to grab it and the second i had my hand in front of her when I pulled her out at night and the room was really dark. So it was completely my fault . I’m hoping maybe I can improve my handling to where she won’t ever strike again. Or maybe get a glove? Maybe that would help

    Thank you! You've shared important info for beginners here. But please if you are afraid of a snake please don't get it. I've had a few snakes. The ball pythons I had were never aggressive, most wanted out to visit daily. I did have a Burmese at one point (14 ft) and she was always a perfect lady. She lives at the Pottawatomie zoo now, Too big to care for properly. I didn't purchase her but was placed in my care. The boas once mature were aggressive and the only snake bites I've ever had. Folks need to know Boas are for a more experienced person.
