@lizbond9677 Most often, the AFP and security agencies take questions on notice often to avoid releasing sensitive information in a public forum. Whether the investigations are in the preliminary stages or are well advanced with significant leads or outcomes/potential outcomes, those questions will likely be taken on notice to protect the investigation. The response to the question is then provided to the Senator who requested the information outside of the public's view. Some departments give one sentence opaque answers to questions and then request to take the question on notice because that's part of the requirements of their job. In asking the question, the Senator's point is to reinforce the importance of the issue or to represent their constituents' concerns. In answering the question (even in the most opaque way or with a request to provide a response on notice), the department confirms its engagement on or with the issue and agrees to provide further information in a suitable manner to the Senator. If you watch consecutive Senate Estimates, you'll soon recognise which departments use the 'on notice' response as it's required in the course of their normal duties and which government departments fail to provide the Senator's with answers and use it to avoid scrutiny.
