Gold-plated hardware. Steambent 1/4" thick maple shell. Japanese craftsmanship. What more could you ask for in a snare drum? Not much. And that's why this is so special. Joey Kramer, the drummer for classic rock legends Aerosmith, previously owned this drum. It's even got the band's logo batter head and the "Property of Aerosmith" sticker inside to prove it. Dennis from Turkish Cymbals USA lent us this drum to try out, and it doesn't disappoint. Do you dig it? Let me know in the comments!
I've been able to play a lot of wonderful Pearl Drums products in the past. I really loved the Masters maple four-ply shells they produced in the 2000s, and I'm so glad that shell is back today. I owned a Masterworks maple gum kit for a hot minute, and I'd really like to own a Masters Maple/Gum in the near future too. There are too many drums to go around with that brand! From the original Vinnie Paul signature snare drum to the Sensitone aluminum snare and even the original Pearl Steve Ferrone model, just about everything that Pearl makes is something I want to buy. I don't know what they're doing over at that factory, but it seems like drum magic!!
The kit used in this video is a 1987 Yamaha Recording Custom drum set with a 22x14" kick drum, 12x8" and 13x9" toms, and a 16x16" floor tom. I use all Evans heads, Promark sticks, and Roots EQ rings to dampen the toms.
I've used some really great cymbals from Turkish Cymbals in this video too - 15" Millennium hats, 20" Meta Crash, 22" Millennium Ride, and a 24" Prototype Special Dry Extra Thin Ride.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy a cold glass of Lillet Blanc, a dessert beverage from France.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

I remember drooling over this snare drum while staring at the ad for it in Drum! magazine when I was kid. Sounds awesome!

Yes!! I literally just found my old stash of Drum! and Modern Drummer magazines the other day. It’s like stepping back in time. 😂😂
Timbo if I ever get cancer I want you to be the one to tell me. Another great episode in the can, can’t wait for next weeks.

Jace!! Yo, thank you so much for your vote of confidence. You're a friggin' legend. I hope with a few more years of hard work, we'll build a fun little community around this stuff--together!
You seem like such a fun person to hang out with, found your content last Saturday and binged watched it all! Love the vids!

Yo, thanks so much for the kind words. Means a lot! It's been super fun to make these long-form videos after focusing on little Instagram clips for so long. More to come! And if you have any questions or ideas, don't hesitate to reach out!!

Thank you! Man, I've seen Dennis around town here since I was a kid. He'd buy drums from us at Music Go Round while I was in college. And we'd see one another at the drum show up until recently when we really started getting into the deep with this Turkish Cymbals stuff. He's such a good guy, and he's incredibly smart. I've got nothing but good things to say about him, and I'm so excited to see whatever else he does in the future!
Thanks a lot.. Now I want one too.. 😅

They're out there! I'm not sure what the fair market value is today, but when I bought my first one, they were typically around 650 used. I got mine for about 400. And the second one I got that needed some replacement parts, I picked up for a couple hundred bucks. I think some folks genuinely don't know what they are because they're so rare, so hopefully you'll find a deal on one sooner than later!
Very cool drum and it sounds amazing

Totally agreed. One of a kind. I’m so happy I got to give this one a go! 😁👊
Never seen that drum before, killer! I live near most of those dudes in southeast MA. I've seen Joey gassing up his Ferrari, seen Steven at a convenience store but the only one I've met was brad when I deliver something to him at his house like 25 yrs ago lol they have a warehouse near by as well or did.

Wowww, what a small world! I've heard Joey is supposed to be a nice dude. Would be rad if you two ran into one another some day. And man, this drum is a joy to play. They're hard to find, but worth picking up if you find 'em priced right!
Excellent video and drumming

Gregggyyyy! Man, thank you. I appreciate it!
About 10 yrs ago somebody on eBay was selling his dw cast bronze with white hardware and a cast copper with white hardware. Both were authenticated signed and had Aerosmith remo heads. Road cases were in the pics too. Each one went for $400-$500ish! I'm still kicking myself for not buying both. They weren't up long and I saw them early. Oh man, still haunts me.

Holy moly. I wonder how those got there. Wish I wouldn't known about them too! hahaha I can't imagine how pumped the buyers were to land those deals.

Thanks Glenn! Man, this snare was a treat. Sometimes, you can just feel the spirit of an instrument, and I definitely felt that with this drum. It made playing those rock tracks even more fun than usual!

just found your channel; first off. Them Yammie rec customs look sick. They sound sicker. Just your whole mic'ing and sound production is stellar. Secondly, I OWN this drum, but I rarely play it. I used it for a couple sessions but I swapped the heads and snares of course. To know it can sound this slappy and bright, wow! Its just got that 'SMACK'. Also, you're a killer player with great fluidity. Rock on mate.

Ethan, man, thanks so much for all the kind words. I've owned a few of these snares over the years, and they've always been so fun to play! If you ever have any questions about how to dial your M-1946 in like this, please shoot me an email or something. I'm always happy to help!
Gold OVER brass? That's really cool. And the wires too?!

Those are interesting drums. And typically I love a of the PDP stuff, but I think the shell was too thick on those for me. It needed a little more body in my opinion. At least we've got this other gold snare to smack around! lol

@@timbofromkeno On the topic of metal snares...have you had a chance to play the Ludwig Copperphonic?
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
@@mobilesuitderka I've played those and the old bronze ones too. They're cool, but for me, those alloys just have too many overtones that I don't care for. I always seem to go back to my trust black nickel over brass Black Beauty.
Snare sounds great! You also know how to bring out the best sounds out of the gear. Share how you record /process the sounds PLEASE!!

Thanks so much for the kind words! You know what the funny thing is? The majority of my sound comes from a $150 Apex 210B Ribbon mic that I put about 35-40 feet out from the kit, set perpendicular so that the figure 8 pattern picks up the walls (ambience), not the hits (transients). And then I just put that thing through Waves CLA-Drums for a little EQ and compression. It's really the key to my whole sound!
Hey timbo! I reckon .. if it appeals , you could lay down your monster druming to set bpms and sell that stuff! I reckon that would sell like hotcakes
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
I might be able to, yeah! There are so many variables that people are picky about with that stuff, though. Some want stereo mixes. Some want stems. Some want raw tracks, while others want processed. And some want specific sample rates. That's why I just do stuff like this. Making content that's fun for me ensures I keep a smile on my face the entire time I'm making music (or music-adjacent content). : )
