Addressing concerns about my no-buy challenge video… (buy less, wear more?!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I had a few questions about why I needed to do a 30-day no-buy challenge when my channel motto is #BuyLessWearMore ... I hope this helps to clear things up 😊 thank you so much for your ongoing support and for being on this journey with me. I am so grateful. xx

I’m sad you feel like you needed to explain yourself. You are so transparent and offer a very realistic, humble and human way of ethical living. Your content is so enjoyable and you’re such a calming presence to watch!

Buying from brands that claim to be sustainable, thrifting or recycling doesn’t necessarily make you a better person. Whereas your honesty, kindness, desire to improve, benevolence, self awareness, and willingness to listen to differing opinions are qualities that do make you a better person. And FY, those who feel the need to police everything you say/do will never be happy. 😄

Emily, you are a unique youtuber. I keep coming back because you are real, honest, and down to earth and naturally beautiful, pleasant to watch . ha ha. I am being honest here as most people like to watch beautiful people. I totally get it as sometimes I get carried away and buy too much 2nd hand clothing. They are so much cheaper and I felt like if I don't like it, I will just wear it once and donate it. It cost me very little money and get into recirculation. But over time I have learned it is not a good habit and started implementing stricter criteria for 2nd hand shopping , basically the same rules for new clothing. My closet has more than 50% 2nd hand clothing, with better quality, in colors that flatter me and I like to wear more. I am making progress , but will never be perfect. I don't care to be perfect anyway. Clothing makes me happy and I will never stop buying them, just be more conscious. We all only live once.

This Video resonates with me so much, thank you. Instead of buying new, I normally prefer second hand especially vintage pieces. Because they are cheap and unique, I used to buy constantly. Now I am aware of my overconsumption of second hand clothing, and working towards buying less, but better. I am selective, building my dream wardrobe gradually. Fashion makes me happy, so I am not going stop shopping. Pursuing the sustainable lifestyle is trying to make progress, not perfection. I am always feelings scared of such title as "Zero Waste"😅

This! I only buy secondhand, and even then, I can go OTT and suddenly have some piece I have but don't use. I'm trying to buy less and wear my wardrobe more.

You have a beautiful sense of style and an refreshing take on things. Let’s face it, no matter what happens we will always bring some things into our wardrobe, but if we can do it more intentionally and sustainably even better. I definitely had a thrift shop ‘problem’ that required some self-reflection!

I am trying to buy less and have succeeded to a certain degree but the temptation is great. I have really slowed down on buying junk clothing and try making new outfits with what I have. I told my sister to slow down on purchases but she gets annoyed with me. I told her to watch some videos about the fashion industry and maybe she would change her mind. We were raised by a mom who shopped to get happiness and we all learned from her that shopping brings you joy. I always felt guilty buying clothes when we were struggling to raise three kids, but I still did it!

I am of a similar mindset to you right now. I have decided to try a no buy challenge for a year as of 1 Nov. like you I don’t really have an issue with buying new things and hardly ever buy any new clothes. But I buy way too many secondhand things. All the best for your challenge. 💕🌸

I have tried to slow down my consumption by sewing my own clothes. But that has created another problem which also has environmental and sustainability issues…buying and collecting fabric. Mostly I choose natural fibres like cotton or linen but there are so many pretty things out there and I now have a stash of fabrics just waiting for me to find the time. It is a balancing act and I love that I am learning new skills and enjoy the process of creating new garments. I haven’t bought anything new, apart from underwear, in 12 months and my wardrobe is gradually turning over as I get better at making my creations look more professional. The world won’t change overnight but we are all starting somewhere in our own way and awareness is the trigger. Keep plugging away Emily. You have an importantly message to share, a platform to do it from and we need to hear it.

I don’t know if the brand “Dyper” is available where you live, but it is a more sustainable option compared to regular diapers, and they do have a composting option. They’re also easier on babies’ skin because there aren’t any fragrances or dyes used.

You’re keeping yourself in check and taking us on the journey. I think it’s great that you’re self aware and you have realised that you felt you were over consuming secondhand clothing. I think it happens to us all on this journey. I think it’s all about balance and finding the right positioning for yourself otherwise your approach would not be sustainable in itself. I’m doing a No Spend November as I’ve felt a little out of control, nothing like I used to be but off kilter with where I want to be. As a regular viewer I completely understood why you were doing it but this video has clarified it for those who didn’t quite understand the context and it’s right to put it out if you felt you needed to clarify. It seems that you are a very honest and open person who is constantly evaluating and learning. The comments regarding Zara sweatshops sent you on this journey of discovery and I’m grateful that the person made that comments as you are now here sharing your journey with us. You have to be one of my favourite channels for styling and sustainability inspiration so thank you for all your hard work.

I have had a similar path in learning about sustainability and reducing waste, and I too believe it's not about being perfect. There are so many things in life than can impact our ability to make the choices we KNOW are better for the environment, finances, health and time for example. But it's important that we don't let a lack of perfection derail our efforts to learn and do better. We can always look for the 'best choice' available to us at a time, and we can continue to choose to see value in reducing our waste and our footprint. We're all just here doing our best. I think you're awesome, and doing a great thing spreading this important message.

Hi Emily, I look forward to your videos and yyour views the most of any of the influencers I follow. No-one is perfect, we can all just keep trying to be better,, through small, consistent, positive actions, whilst at the same time acknowledging we are here to live. It needs to be a happy, fulfilling and enjoyable path through life, otherwise, what's the point...!? Best wishes x

Such a tricky space to be in, I really feel your desire to be transparent. I love to focus on systems over individuals. You as an individual are doing your best. The system (in this case, fast fashion) is the problem. We as individuals can do our best but for true improvements to happen the system has to change (which we as individuals can support through voting for ethical and sustainable policies etc). It's an interesting conversation and I appreciate the way you handled this ❤️. Much love from another Emily in NZ 😊

Thanks for this video ❤ I kind of needed it too. It's about doing the best we can, and it is a learning journey. I also noticed I was buying lots of second hand clothes that I really didn't need just because they were cheap, so I'm working on it. Also, could you make a video about less waste at home? I use paper towels and detergents 😅 Could you please talk about alternatives? I'd love to learn more. Thank you.

Happy Saturday! Life is a learning curve. Being conscious and committed is a mind set and a lifestyle, not a perfection. 'Let he who is perfect be the one to throw the first stone'. People are so judgmental. I hope you NEVER ever have to make a video like this again and never feel the need to. I learn so much from you XXX
