I did a 30-day NO BUY challenge for CLOTHES! Here's how it went...

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I recently embarked on my very first 30-day no-buy / no-spend challenge for clothing. I decided that I wanted to do this no-buy challenge because I realised that I had started to overindulge in second-hand clothes.
I wanted to break from the cycle of overconsumption, as well as see what I learned from the experience. I was particularly interested if I would have any effect on my style going forward as well.

What do you think of trying a no-buy challenge? Do you think you would benefit? x

Last year when I moved to my new home I came to grips with the reality that I shopped to self medicate. I had to stop, I could no longer afford it nor did I have the room for all my stuff. I got rid of so much but still had way more than anyone really needs. Then about 4 months ago my closest was so heavy with clothes, the rod came away from the wall. I’ve had the closet rebuilt but I need to get rid of so much more. It’s such a difficult and emotional process. I have now cut down to only one item per month in purchases but I need to stop that and purge. Somehow I’ll get it done.

You should be proud of the progress you have made already. It's amazing to first be able to notice that's what was happening and that you wanted to stop. Cutting back to one item per month is awesome 👏Might be worth doing a no-buy challenge for a month as your next step. Well done, I understand how emotional it can be. xx

I also noticed it is very easy to over consume second hand clothing as they are so much cheaper. I need to set as strict criteria for second hand clothing as new clothes. Good reminder. Emily

I am totally addicted to that HIT! During COVID I did low buys and no buys and actually it wasn't that hard. I am tempted to buy stuff now when the season changes and I haven't got out all my winter stuff yet. I really need to look at it all before I purchase anything, because I really do have everything I need already!. Sometimes I just scroll and scroll emails of this that and everything for the hit it gives me (a bit like window shopping). It is so sad. However, on a happier note I did a 23 in 2023 book challenge this year and...I have already read 30 books and it's mid-October! Awesome!! That gives me a HIT too. ha ha

Due to the nature of my job, I always move around the world, and when I am in a new city, my decade old clothes still work for me to look smart enough. From my point of view, it's more of the environment you are in, the culture you are in and marketing by those fashion companies that make you feel like you are not keeping up with the latest fashion trends. I think I bought only a dress for 2 years? And even this was to support a local tailor. I am kind of lucky that I have lived in places where people don't care much about fashion trends.

Yeah, this is a really good point, we are certainly products of our environment. I also feel as though I have always loved clothes since a really young age. Putting outfits together for me now is also a creative outlet. I wonder if in my case I need to try to get my 'creative itch' scratched in different ways. Thanks for making me think about this 🙏💕x

Thank you Emily for this 30-day no buy challenge. It's very encouraging for people like me who sometimes feel guilty when watching no buy year videos! No buy or low buy, I think it's like quitting cigarets or alcohol: some need to do it slowly, some need to cut at once.

I really need to do a no but challenge for myself. One thing that helps me is to change my closet out seasonally. Even though I live in Southern California and our seasons are not extreme, we still have clothes for hot days and cooler days. I really have plenty of clothes but like some of the other commenters, I like to shop when I get stressed and I love the second hand stores. I was sick through most of October and haven’t done any clothes shopping. And like you I lived to tell the tale 😂

I have already done two no-buy-challenges for each 3 months. They both were so mind-opening! When we consider honestly we all know that we would not need any new clothes for the next couple of years! Certainly it's so much fun to buy new things and at the beginning I often got tempted to buy new things. But I started more to see it as a kind of hobby or interest for me, so I really like to see outfits and cloths on Internet, but also love to watch other people in street or also check out colths in my favorite shops, just for seeing whats new etc. But I don't have any more the feeling that I personally need all these things. I already have so many stuff at home that I really like to wear, so if I would add even more peaces I would feel sorry if I could't wear all my "old" things any more. It's a bit a change of mindset I think. So you don't have to stop to be interested in fashion, you just have to recognize that you don't need all these things on your own!

This video was very helpful for me, as I gear up to do a 30-day no-buy, next month. I'm calling it "No-buy-vember" 😉 I feel as though I've been over-consuming lately, so I'm hoping this exercise puts things in perspective for me. Thanks for sharing your tips! ❤

another eye opening practice is to keep a running total next to where you shop on line, of the dollar amount you've spent. It can be pretty shocking. I recently added up October through December and it was nearly 1500.00! Probably only half of the items were even slightly necessary.

I volunteer in a charity shop sorting new donations and it is so tempting to buy too much. I probably need a ban on anything not on my need list- even if it promises to add a whole new dimension to my wardrobe. This morning I put together a lot of outfits from what I have to remind myself I don't really need anything and although a grey scarf would give me some extra outfits, I have other outfits that will do the job for the moment so I'll move it from the need to the want list for a month then review.

I recently shifted to Dubai from my home country India in September for work. I am totally a shopaholic but I had decided not to buy anything new for myself for 30 days. This 6th of November, it's going to be 2 months since I haven't bought a single new piece of clothing/accessory/footwear and somehow I feel so free and indifferent. Of course, I will shop once the 60 days are over, but my main concern is, what if I go back to splurging and what should I do to keep myself in control?

I have a buying problem. I do not think I will do it next month. Or the month of December, because of Christmas. But I think I could in January. I might have to buy something’s for my grandkids. Actually they just use one of my credit cards. I have nothing to do with it. I have a twelve year old grandson, who now has to help his grandfather wash his truck. Because I gave him my card for a fifty dollar game. So he has to work for that money. It’s funny his sister’s never have to. But they usually want food. If I can’t shop online. Then I can read on my e reader. I already have books on it. There is a book I might look for. But I will get it before my no but month. My husband won’t believe me. I get packages here all the time.

It's just wild that there are people who randomly buy clothes more than once per year for no particular reason like a graduation or their wedding party. Wow!

I think there’s a spectrum. Some people don’t find fashion interesting and never feel the need to buy anything new unless they truly need it for an event, others like fashion as a form of creative expression and still want to enjoy it in a mindful way, and others are more unaware of marketing and/or environmental issues and are more caught up in overconsumption. I know I used to be the latter, and I try to do better now. But I love styling clothes and think I will always continue to curate my wardrobe and enjoy bringing in new items here and there. I dunno, that’s just how I feel about it. What do you think?

@@EmilyElizabethMay I think this is a generational thing. Buying things on a regular basis for self expression is unheard of in older generations unless you are incredibly rich. If you said something like that prior to the 2000s people would think you were odd. If you had a particular look then you put that look together once and maybe kept it up by buying something once every other year unless you damaged your clothes. You might instead get clothes second hand from friends or family and alter them, dye them, or embellish them to suit your look.

  • @EmilyElizabethMay

    @EmilyElizabethMay

Yeah, actually I get that and hadn't thought of it that way. I agree. It's interesting to think how much has changed. I think my grandma was an outlier to this though, so I think interests still pay a role. She was a big lover of fashion and bought new things often (mainly from catalogues). I remember sitting on her lap and reading the fashion catalogues together and choosing something new for her. So I think she also had it in her bones that she just loved putting outfits together. I do still think personality/preferences have a big factor too as well as the people around you who may influence you and what generation you were born. I do enjoy thinking about it this way though. Thanks for chatting@@belkyhernandez8281

Good question. I did address it in the video but didn’t go into detail for time constraints. I noticed that I had fallen off the bandwagon with over-consuming second-hand clothes again. And I wanted to address that. I like to stay honest with you guys on how I go on my own journey with sustainable fashion and this is something that popped up for me, so I’m sure it happens to others as well.

I was buying at least 1-2 pieces of second hand items per month the months prior. So it wasn’t a huge challenge, but still a necessary step for me to take to get back on track with my consumption. I hope that makes sense.
