A wonderfully comprehensive second hand shopping guide, thank you so much Emily. Have been a second hand shopper for 40 years and still enjoy the thrill of the hunt. My best (favourite) statement pieces have been found out of season, when I'll be trawling through the winter coats on a sweltering January day. I'm not an accumulator, one in - one out works for me, leaving spaces between hangers and all current season garments on display. 90% of my wardrobe is op-shopped, tried on in store. (Online hasn't been successful 'cos I guess I'm a touchy feely kinda girl.)

Oh I love that your wardrobe is 90% op-shopped. That is amazing! Totally understand the feeling of being able to touch something to know if its right for you. It feels funny buying a coat in the midst of summer, but you're right in doing so, that's when you can beat the competition and get your hands on those gems ! haha 😆 thanks for sharing xx

Great video :) I like using second hand to get access to better quality brands I wouldn’t normally be able to budget for, or to play with new styles that I’m not fully certain about whether they will suit me enough to invest in at full price! Xx

Totally agree! It’s a great way to try new styles and to find a bargain. Especially when you find those really good quality pieces for a fraction of the price. I love it for testing out trends too, trends come and go so fast so it’s often sad to invest lots of money into them if you’re unsure Xx

Very helpful for online shopping. Your advice makes it less daunting. I have sewn a lot and use my fingers first when shopping in person to discover the “hand” of the fabric before venturing further. Recently that led to a beautiful cashmere sweater for $5.00 US in a charity shop. Oh, and it was a high quality name brand piece.

You are welcome! Love the idea of using your hands to discover the fabric first, you're not the only one who has said this in the comments, it's a great idea! Thank you for sharing 🙏⭐️xx

I find going to charity shops in certain areas that’s a bit more affluent, you may get a few more designer items than the average store. I also tend to use a few 2nd hand sellers on instagram and I’ve actually gotten items which are new with tags from them but at a 2nd hand price.

Yes! This is also such a great tip. Thank you for sharing. Im often shocked at some of the designer items that I find in affluent areas. And I’ve heard Instagram is also such a great place, I’ve never dived into it! Maybe that is something I’ll test out soon 🥰❤️ x

Great tips Emily! I totally agree with shopping out of season. That's how I found most of my best pieces. I do not have many sources for shopping second hand in person where I live but every time I want to add something to my wardrobe, I search online for second hand first and most of the time, I end up finding a better option that way, less costly and unique.

Yes totally agree! Always worth checking out for second hand pieces first. What platform do you tend to use the most for second hand on online? x

@@EmilyElizabethMay We have Poshmark here in Canada. I sometimes use Ebay as well. I know many people use Vinted but I heard it was not a very secure option. 🥰

I have built quite a beautiful maternity wardrobe via thrift shopping by shopping in the men’s and upsizing. I am astounded at how I’ve been able to get along with non-maternity pieces, and still look super chic. Some of my best pieces and jeans especially were found in the men’s section. Particularly Levi’s jeans. And I didn’t spend much on them so when I’m not maternity anymore, the pants can either be kept for another unexpected baby… Or passed along via thrift, or to another friend. However, thrift shopping is work. It’s time, you must want to do it and enjoy sifting through things because it is definitely not for everyone. There are things I have been really wanting to find that I just never see you in the shops so I shop specifically for those items online with Poshmark or Mercari. Some people just want to find at noon and Collett good but even that takes some shopping. If vintage is part of your personal style, Thrifting is where it’s at. Wonderful tips, thank you!!

Oh this is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. I wish I did more thrifting when I was pregnant, but I didn’t get around to it. It totally is a lot of work isn’t it. I do agree, you have to enjoy it. When you do find those special pieces though it makes it all worth it 😍 When’s baby due? Is this your first or do you have other kids? Xx congrats

Really very cool video! I tried it so often to shop second hand but always wirhout succsess, so I am already a bit frustrated. Mostly because I never can find my sice (XXS or XS), the things often are so big, that it would make no sense to alter them. I have only some few shops near me. And online I find it very difficult, because of not having the possibility to try the things on... however, maybe with your tips I will have more succsess in the future 🤔

I have never shopped second hand in my life and now I live in a place where second hand does not exist. I prefer to shop new and make them last year's. I do enjoy your videos but this does sound like hard work. Xx

Totally understand, it is hard work and you have to enjoy the process. I think you get a lot of enjoyment once you do finally find those unique special pieces. Buying quality items that last a long time, like you said is also such a great way to be sustainable ❤️🙏🏽 xx
