Adding white borders and fitting images to standard print sizes easily with templates in GIMP

Ойын-сауық

I show you how I made some templates to generate correctly sized images for printing, should you want to print your photos. I use GIMP to make my templates as it is open source and fairly easily to learn how to use. Thanks for watching!

You can also add alpha channels with torn or decorative edge effects. Enjoy the day!

I am going to have to try GIMP, I still use the free Nikon software..lol...but all I do usually is add a little sharpness so I never really experimented with anything else

I works really well for share-ware. I have used it for years with little to no trouble from it and have been able to do pretty much anything I wanted to do with it. I like it. 👍📸

@@davidsaylors I will give it a try but I think im going to update my old laptop first, its a 2014 version and its struggling a little which I can deal with but I bought my 16 year old daughter one at the same time and she lets me know how outdated our laptops are...lol...but I also let her know that she is old enough to get a job and that usually ends the conversation 😂😂

Great idea. I usually give up on trying to make my images look good while trying to it them in those print house constraints.. didn’t Know CVS did prints. Do you upload those online too?

I go to CVS in Trenton when I want some 8x10 or smaller prints and dont want to wait too long for them. I just save them to a memory stick and run down there. Pro-tip: Choose the 1 hour option, it is WAY cheaper and almost as fast. Our local store is very efficient with prints and normally has them done before we finish shopping for other stuff anyway. 👍📸

Yeah, and the photos aren’t all that bad. They normally look really good to be honest. They also are real good about not hassling you if you dont like one and reject it before you have to pay for it.

It’s interesting that Lightroom mobile doesn’t have a simple border tool. On a mobile platform the LR edited photo can be taken into Snapseed where a heap of borders can be added. Although those borders do encroach on the photo rather than being outside of the image.

That is the same thing I am doing here, my border is a layer over the image so I am sacrificing image area too, it makes it easier to fit it that way. I havent used snapseed in quite some time to be honest, I mostly just use the built in editor in the iphone and just run with it. I am still not using an ipad for stuff like a lot of those younger whipper snappers 😉. Thank you for the information, that makes it a lot easier for printing photos through your phone if there is a simple app to add a border like that, a lot of people use their phones to transport the images to the printing agency now as well, so it is good to have options. Thanks for the information!!! 👍📸😎

David Saylors Not a fan of the IOS editing app. The current version is usable and has a few tools but I struggle to get it looking decent. Much better using Lightroom mobile. At least the IOS app exists and can edit RAWs, and is free, but it’s not something I will use. Lightroom mobile has had some new updates. Can now apply your own RAW import settings which is handy. And can create multiple saved versions of your edited photos. It’s pretty good at $7 a month. Adobe want $16-50 a month for the mobile Photoshop. They can shove that where the sun don’t shine 😂

I use Affinity Photo, $25 one time, on sale, and use a local printer that fingerprints their printers. If you are going to print anything other than snapshots, minimum size should be 11x17. I've used Photoshop since the 80s and still do for 1 function only. Affinity is just as powerful for the photographer and only slight;y less for the graphic designer. If I had started with Affinity first I would probably feel the reverse. Paper sizes are wedded to the printing industry standard sheet sizes for book production from before photography.

Now I get it. That format has never made sense to me. Why would the print not match the negative? Now I know. The print PREDATES photography, but that now begs the question, why didnt camera companies format film and image ratios in the cameras to match standards in the printing industry since they go hand in hand? Wow, what a rabbit hole!!! 📸👍

also using Affinity Photo. specially after Adobe went to "renting" their stuff ;( .... the best "clone" for PS. Not as hard as it seems. Sorry Adobe competition is healthy as you can see and maybe feel in your pocketbook

My command for shrink is grey and I am new to Gimp- so I can't get past this step...any suggestions?

  • @davidsaylors

    @davidsaylors

    Жыл бұрын

Yes, I have a couple of ideas. First, choose the layer then select right click and “add alpha channel” on the layer. It is a choice when you right click on it. Now with that layer selected see if the Shrink option is still greyed out. If it is then create a white layer on top of the image and add an alpha channel to it. Then draw a rectangle inside it leaving the border you want and delete the selection. That should leave a white border around your image too.
