    Just some casual thoughts after watching. When the anemone is moving, don't switch flow off. Part of the conditions the anemone is looking for is the flow conditions. If you switch off the flow to allow the anemone to find it's place, then switch the flow back on, you can find it starting to move again. This is the reason for the flow guard. Although it was hinted at in this video don't be too shocked if an anemone has been in one spot for a long time then decides it changed it's mind. I really liked my bubble tip anemone. I say liked as I now have two as they do split on occasion. You may want to consider this during your research phase and decision making process. If you have "extra" you may want to consider what you are going to do with them. Will your Local Fish Shop (LFS) for example take them? My ocellaris clownfish pair took around 6 months to host simply by being patient. I've heard, although not had confirmation through experience, that different species of clownfish may prefer different types of anemone. This may be something to also research. Something not mentioned in this video is feeding. I have to say I rely on mine to mainly use photosynthesis, feeding them only occasionally, about once a week with frozen food such as mysis shrimp using a pipette. Really well done, informative video though. Well done.

    Freaky Goblin thanks for your comments very constructive I only meant you should switch off flow temporarily if you don’t have a guard as most mortality I have seen is because of the wondering into the power head when your not watching the tank usually at night when you asleep. As for feeding good point could have sworn I touched on this when making the video guess I missed it out thanks for mentioning it as it is important to feed occasionally to supplement there nutrition. Getting the right clown type to best suit the type of anemone is totally a thing you have a much better chance of a hosting if they are a mach for what has been observed in the wild but mine are hosted but a coral so you would think they are not that fussy from this behaviour. Appreciate you comments thanks for taking the tame to add you thought 🙏🏻👍🏻✌🏻

    @@raisingreef339 Glad you approve. Only trying to add additional info, easier to do after the fact. Missed the bit when you said about switching flow off but totally agree. Heard many stories on anemone's being killed by flow pumps. As for clown types and chances for hosting, it does seem strange considering the variety of things clown seem to host in. Most amusing one I think I've heard of is a clam. Still the most important thing and one which cannot be expressed enough for any reefer, especially those new to the hobby, is patience. That's not simply related to anemone's but all of reefing.

    Best way which worked for me was to set up a small nano tank just for anemone and two clown fish with just one live rock good enough size for anemone to settle on and I use to just feed my anemone every second day and clownfish started to pick food out of anemone’s tentacles and started hosting. It took me 10 days but it worked and make sure you switch off power heads etc so there is no flow in the tank whilst you feed your anemone :) good luck!

    Hi thanks for you kind words From what you describe it sounds like the light is a bit strong for them It can be hard to satisfy all your corals/inverters in what is a relatively small depth of water creating some shade with an overhang can help to prevent this to much light reaching them. Or if you can reduce the light level a little over time to see how the tank inhabitants react. Hope this helps and glad you enjoyed my video 👍🏻

  • @raisingreef339

    @raisingreef339

    Davinci Reef hi my anemone moved about quite a bit to start with and did sting a few corals along the way nothing was killed outright so I guess I was lucky. The Nem started to move again when I was getting ready to split and the the individual parts went for a walk and one half had to be relocated a couple of times. Now they seem to have found spots they like and I have 3 from the original one. If you can put up with this they make an interesting addition to a reef but you may find they don’t move much at all or are constantly moving about it’s hard to predict. Glad you liked my video thanks.

    @freakygoblin3068

    Mine moved around 3ft in total distance from where in started ending up on the backside of the aquascape, rather than front it started on. I moved corals out the way once the direction of the move became clear. It's not exactly the speediest of movement. Worth mentioning the "length" of the foot can be quite long height wise. Whilst the foot is low in the tank, the actual tentacles are quite high in my case.

    When starting a new reef, is it a god way to go, adding the anemone(s) u want first of all other corals...let them find their own spots and after that fill the gaps with whatever u like??

  • @raisingreef339

    @raisingreef339

    4 жыл бұрын

    This is ideal but there is no guarantee it will stay put long term as you place coral in the tank the flow dynamic in the tank will change and any adjustments you make to lighting or power head positions could encourage it to start moving so in theory it’s yes but potentially no if that helps. Definitely worth a try but most recommend an established tank for an anemone so how long you are willing to wait to add anything could prove tedious with all the excitement of stocking a new system.

    This can work well to allow the anemone to settle before adding the corals however in practice this doesn’t always work out as at any point the anemone can start to move around sometimes months after staying put and appearing settled so this isn’t guaranteed to avoid issues.

    James Collins they can as long as you are confident your tank is ready and stable. The only thing I would say is there is no guarantee that at any point the anemone won’t start to wonder about especially if it’s ready to split. But adding it in first shouldn’t hurt just make sure you get the right type as some can grow massive and overrun your tank so just be sure it’s definitely the Nem you think it is. And good luck 🤞🏼

    Leon Islas hi glad you liked my video this sounds like an unhappy Nem for sure. Did you feed it as it would have benefited from some meaty food once or twice a week. Also driving down levels of nitrate and phosphate very low can upset them. Or maybe you have a build up of something in the water that is irritating it. Or maybe it could be a lighting issue and it has slowly been declining though inadequate light level or spectrum. In truth there are many reasons that this may happen and it can be hard to pinpoint the problem. I would start with some water changes to reset the water quality and test your water levels regularly and track them to identify any possible issues also running some carbon my help to reduce organic and chemical contamination and see how you get on. Sorry I can give you the golden bullet but hopefully you can have better success going forward. It is possible the men you have is past saving and any efforts to correct the issue may only help with a new specimen but it’s possible the one you have may recover although in my experience from what you say it may be past saving. Good luck and let me know if you manage to find the solution. ✌🏻

    Hi congrats on setting up your tank. I find it best to get fish that don’t compete for space so fish that will occupy the sand bed, the rocks, the central water column and those that like it closer to the top. I personally like the smaller fish like gobies and blennys but have a read up on any you like the look of as some are more likely to become a pain for one reason or another although there are no guarantees. Also fire fish are great but they can jump out if you don’t have a cover and they can pick on each other so need to be in more than just a pair. I always say what ever catches your eye read up on and make a decision on wether you think it will be happy in your tank based on the other fish you have or want to add and the size and layout of your tank. But in many cases these rules are a guide and there will be different opinion’s on that is ok based on their own experience. I Hope this is helpful and I hope your tank brings you many hours of joy.

    You can have fish and they do know to stay ways unless it’s a carpet anemone and they can be good at eating you fish Bubble tips are usually the safe bet and if you do see a fish getting eaten by one of these it’s usually a case of poorly or dead fish ending up in it rather than being killed by it. Also some fish and shrimp will be hosted by nems so if you get some clowns fish there is a good chance the will live in it.

    Jeremy Jaquez hi there that’s certainly possible selection is key though choosing a type that isn’t going to get to big and accepting that you may be limited to what space you will have for other corals. If you want it to host clowns abubble tip should be ok if you get one that doesn’t end up to big this is a little hit and miss sometimes on how big they will grow before splinting. If you not worried about hosting then a condo anemone is a nice type that stay smaller. Personally i would probably stick to corals in a tank that size but either way you will have to pay attention to water quality to keep it looking good and healthy. Good luck with it if you do end up getting a Nem 👍🏻

  • @raisingreef339

    @raisingreef339

    Thanks for your comment 👍🏻 I would say that bubble tips offer a greater chance of hosting your clowns although long tentacle Nem are known to in some instances it’s not guaranteed and if the symbiotic relationship is you ultimate goal then you may be better off with a bubble tip. Also as they bury their foot in the substate if you have corse gravel rather than sand this can irritate its foot and course damage. So worth considering when making your choice. Hope this helps and good luck with what ever one you decide to go for.

I’m sorry I can’t remember what oceans this refers to exactly as it was a long time ago so some research into this may help. This also applies to species some anemone are much better at surviving in aquariums and others don’t do well. Plus some animals in the shops aren’t always in the best health and could be already close to death and often moving it to another environment finishes it off. My advice is to always buy animals that are captive bread for the best chance of success these are already used to aquarium life and generally harder. If you are confident the anemone you are buying are healthy then you need to look at your acclimatisation techniques and aquarium conditions Although you parameters may seem within acceptable levels there may be contamination in your tank that affects inverts specifically like copper or aluminium for example there are many elements that can be in the water that we don’t test for that can cause us issues. In this instance doing a series of water changes and running activated carbon could also help to resolve the problems your experiencing. Hope this is of some help and you have success keeping anemone going forward as they are a wonderful addition to a reef tank.

    Hi this anemone is found in muddy sediment with its foot buried beneath if you don’t have a sand bed or it’s to shallow it may never be able to remain in place and continue to get moved around the tank by the current. You could try building a mound of substrate and placing the Nem on it and it may anchor itself in place or make a circle of rocks and fill it with sand about 4” deep and that may help it secure itself. That’s about all I can suggest I’m afraid hope that is of use to you and good luck.

    4 жыл бұрын

    Anemone are found usually in different environment to sps so the perfect conditions for one can be less than ideal for the other a mixed reef is probably the most challenging as you are trying to create an investment that will suit all but at the same time get the best out of them. Having an sps only or softy only tank for example is much easier to achieve than a mixed reef. It is common for a Nem to hide and just shrivel up and die if it’s not happy with its environment. I always say to people try to focus on the things that do well in your tank and give it some time before trying again with the others as your tank will change over time and may become more accommodating to things that haven’t thrived in your tank previously. Sps love low nutrients and intense light and high flow nems prefer more nutrients in the water lower flow and have to acclimated to higher light slowly so it can be a tough one to get right first time.

    Steve Brown how did they die ? If they all went the same way then there is probably a specific reason you haven’t been successful. How long did they last ? How old is your tank ? What other live stock is in the tank ? What setup are you running? (lights, filtration, ect.) There are many things that could contribute to failure your favourite fish store should be able to help you to eliminate the obvious and work out why it’s not working out for you if they are knowledgeable. It can be hard to advise on a tank you don’t know. Start with water quality, lighting, and flow then look at livestock is something bothering/eating them and go from there. PS. Good luck in finding success with this I know it can be frustrating when things die and your not sure why. 🤞🏼

    Steve Brown what other livestock have you got in the tank? Do you test your water for nitrate, phosphate, alkalinity ammonia ect. And track your levels as stability is the key with reef tanks. As the first two didn’t die straight away it sound like the condition of the tank isn’t suited to them did you feed the anemone did it stay in one place or roam around the tank continually was it getting enough/to much light Did you buy the men’s from the same place and have you asked them for advice as to what’s not going right ?

    Raising Reef yes, test water pH, ammonia nitrate and nitrite. They moved around the tank until they found their spot. Currently have some assorted softies, devils finger, Lilly pad and feather dusters. Couple of mocha clown fish, 3 assorts damsels, sand star and a bunch of brittle stars. Using the Horizon Aqua light bar (still trying to figure the best settings). Live and dry rock all purchased from same store. Was told my tank my be too clean and suggested I change the canister to a HOB filter. Did this recently. I don’t see any improvement after doing this. Not sure if a sump set up will improve results or not.. I have limited space

    Steve Brown well there is nothing obvious from what you has said that stands out as a reason you haven’t been successful. Maybe run some carbon if you don’t already give it a few months and try again once you happy with your lighting schedule and intensity. Or maybe consider a ICP water test to eliminate an imbalance that may explain what’s up.

    How long should someone wait to add a nem in a new tank? Mine is a 125 gallon and has cycled (turbo start). There are 6 fish already. It's about 3 weeks old with live rock and black carribsea sand (coarse). We have 2 clowns that we assume are paired by now (they are constantly together but we did not buy them as a pair). My second question is you mentioned above about the coarse sand possibly injuring the nems foot... is my particular sand an issue for nems?

  • @raisingreef339

    @raisingreef339

    4 жыл бұрын

    There is some debate over how long to wait before adding a Nem to a newly set up tank most say 6 months but the true answer is when the tank is ready how you know this is by adding a Nem and seeing how it dose the longer you wait the more likely your tank is ready so 6 months is a guess some people will get away with adding it sooner with no issues and others may find even after a year they experience problems each tank is different so there is no definitive correct answer to this. I would try to be patient and wait as long as possible to give your tank time to fully cycle and settle down. But if your feeling lucky and your tank is doing really well you can try one sooner just be prepared if you take a chance that it may not work out for you. The sand will only course a potential problem for Nems that like to burry there foot in the sand like the long tentacle or carpet Nem others will normally find a spot on a rock or some other hard surface. So the sand should be a problem for them.

    I have never had an issue with Nems going In tanks straight away so don’t really subscribe to that train of thought same goes for corals for that matter the whole mature tank thing is a bit misleading as tanks are constantly changing during its life according to how well it’s being maintained/controlled. As long as the tank is stable then there is no reason to wait.

  • @raisingreef339

    The k value isn’t necessarily your issue it will be a mater of par intensity and wether there will be enough to provide sufficient energy to sustain the Nem You can feel the Nem regularly to help sustain it but without sufficient light of the right spectrum and intensity you will likely not achieve the colour and overall health that is required for long term success. My advice is if your serious about having a Nem get a full spectrum light to give yourself the best chance of success and then there is nothing to stop you getting a few corals for your tank as well.
