How To Get Clownfish To Host Anemone

In this video I go over how to introduce an anemone into your saltwater aquarium. Then I go over how to introduce a clownfish into an anemone successfully. This was a trial and error experiment. After several failures, I finally got my clownfish to host the anemone. Watch how I did it.

    Congrats! I have a technique that hasn’t failed me yet. I wait for the clowns to be asleep at night, then net at least one of em and let it touch the nem. As soon as they feel the sting of the nem, their natural instincts kick in and they will host it.

    Old video now but one method i used that worked 100% of the time was getting a strainer basket and attaching foam on the sides so it floats. Then place the nem in there with the clownfish for a few days and then move them into the tank. Normally the clowns go into the nem in 10-20 mins but i keep them in there for 3-4 days to make sure they know to go in the nem when i place them in the tank. Another method that worked well for me was scaring the fish. Scare them so they look for a place to hide. They always shot right into the nem after they brushed up on it when they were looking for a place to hide. I also used a scraper but i used a net too. I moved the scraper fast so the fish were actually trying to get away. If i moved it slow like you did, it wont work.

    Nice video. I bought a new male clown... 1 day later he started to host my tortch.. the female I had followed him in there the day after. She had been in the same corner of the tank for almost a year. Strange thing I noticed was that it looked like the male encouraged her to follow him in. He always was swimming toward her and would than swim back to the tortch coral. It was awsome to watch the. 😉😉

    All I had to do was have a small anemone in the tank and then added the fish. If you have fish that wont home to the anemone, try putting the fish in a bucket of tank water with a bubbler for a day or so. They will forget everything they ever knew of your tank. Add them back in and they will be disoriented and go looking around again for a suitable host, find it rehome themselves. Fish dont have long term memory, so confusion of their surroundings can have a significant impact on what they consider their territory or home. Good luck.

    Yes, the larger of the two will be the female and more aggressive of the two. The males can change to females, but females can not change to males. Once a female, there's no going back.

    So glad for you. I wasn’t so lucky and had to get rid of my RBT for the reasons you mentioned. To much stress/risk on my end if my clowns weren’t hosting it. I tried wrapping the tank in pictures of hosting clownfish. No good. I removed my fish and RBT and placed them in a stainer in the tank for 3 days. Thy hosted it in the strainer but when I released them all back. The clowns left and never returned. One main obstical I had was my clowns were in an “anemoneless” reef for 10 months. And hosted my return line on the right side of my tank. My anemone was placed on the left side of the tank as it was the only good place for it. I think the distance was the biggest obstical I had Some day I’ll try again.

  • @ReeferGil

    @ReeferGil

    5 жыл бұрын

    Why would you expect growth after such a short time? Most reefers wish anemone's wouldn't grow large to avoid having them sting neighboring corals. If your conditions are good, it will grow... but in time. Worst thing you can do is try to overfeed it. You will end up killing it. I would not suggest buying a second anemone as you will not have different results. You current anemone will look fabulous.
